I think he's a fan-fucking-tastic actor when he picks the right films. Leaving Las Vegas really couldn't have been anyone else. And in Kick-Ass - quirky, interesting, engaging? And i thought he suited The Rock perfectly.
Sometimes amazing, sometimes terrible.

A friend and I were discussing actors the other day.

Some we like, some we hate (looking at you, Hayden Christensen), but we also got on to Nicholas Cage.

Basically, what we realized, was that his films are nuts. He's extreme, he either makes really GOOD movies (Con Air, Kick-ass, Lord of War etc.) or some really TERRIBLE movies (Bangkok Dangerous, etc.) With next to none falling into any form of middleground. The only one I can think of off-hand is really Next, which was entertaining, but only mind-numbingly so.

Adaptation is one of my favorite movies. Strike that... IS my favorite movie.
He is so good in that I overlook EVERY BAD MOVIE HE HAS DONE.

I don't think this was the intent of the video but it actually made me realize what a great career this guy has had, if you leave out all the crap that is. I mean, Rumble Fish, Peggy Sue Got Married, Raising Arizona, Moonstruck, Wild at Heart, Honeymoon in Vegas, Leaving Las Vegas, Face/Off, Lord of War, that would be a very respectable list for any actor.

Raising Arizona and Adaptation are tops in my book! Coen Bros. and Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman for the fucking win!

I saw those movies (except for Ladykillers) and I have still put Hanks in the same 'class' of actor as Kevin Costner, David Ducovony, or Nicolas Cage. These are actors who are the same guy in every role they have. Story is different, but character is about the same in terms of what the actor is 'doing'. Costner is always the slightly wry everyman in every show he does. Hanks is the same way. They play their particular approach solidly as you put it, but in no way does it come across to me as great acting. So I don't see why people fall all over themselves talking about how great Hanks is. IMO, he's strictly average at best and in some shows he is painfully sub-par.

And I hated Hanks in Castaway. That movie sucked. Five minutes of movie 'packed' into two hours.

Funny, I was not much of a Nicolas cage fan until Raising Arizona and I still say the best scene he did was In Face Off. The Opening when he is the bad guy. They screw it up when he becomes the good guy. I'm waiting for Him to play another Good bad guy. He would be awesome.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

See, when I read that I hear " .. you like Nicolas Cage ... ewwww"

Knowing is a great, under-appreciated film by a serious director - hampered only by the reputation of its over-exposed leading actor.

Pardon me for being patronizing, but when you reach a certain age you may judge a film on its merits rather than the "en vogue" status of its cast.

PS. Patronizing means to talk down to someone in a condescending way - like they're a child. Now run along.

and DAG..you liked "knowing"?...ewwww..
