Officer Friendly is NOT your friend

enoch says...

what an odd dynamic here on the sift in regards to lantern.

many here (myself included) have seemed to put the mantle of responsibility squarely on lanterns shoulders,as if he represented ALL police....everywhere.

this is not only patently false,it is very unfair.

BUT....

and @lantern53 this is very important you understand this very crucial, pivotal point:

the outrage you see here playing out on the sift in regards to police abuse of power and authority (oftimes directed AT you) comes directly from a perspective on how we all view HOW a true police officer should behave.

we feel (i dont mean to speak for everyone..but im going to anyways) that those in a position of power and authority have to be held to a much higher standard than the rest of us.

why?

because they are in a position of power and authority!!!!

and to abuse that public trust.
be it by the use of violence or intimidation,is the greatest of all betrayals.

so when we see a cop abusing his powers,in whatever capacity,we become outraged and angered.
justifiably so in my opinion.

i know you like to poke the hornets nest from time to time and it gives you the giggles.
ok..thats fair enough...
but stop defending the indefensible.

as a police officer you should be the first one condemning those cops who have obviously stepped over the line.
i am willing to be that you have done just that in your time on the force.most cops i know do it that way.
police policing themselves in a roundabout way.

i have full confidence you are good at what you do and have built a skin so thick not much really phases you anymore, but stop defending those cops that are NOT good cops...they are a cancer on your institution and they make those of you who ARE good at what you do treated with suspicion and wariness.

so listen to those here who are telling you how they feel about the bad cops.these are not criticizing you in particular,so dont feel you have to defend every bad cop out there.

so just as you do not represent every cop on the planet, dont allow those bad cops define you.

we are counting on you to be better.

Hamas exists as a direct response to the Israeli occupation and illegal settlement of Palestinian lands. They then kick the hornets nest by periodic and blatant bombing of civilian targets, and top it off with taking even more land. I fail to see what other reaction they expect.

chingalera says...

Gotta love that 'reasonable and prudent' caveat considering any cop on any day can decide that for you.

Handy Tip #87364: As a buffer to speeding or (other) citations, carry about ten used asthma inhalers in your on-board bag-o-tricks and when a cop pulls you over, dump 'em out on the passenger seat and floorboard and start hyper-ventilating through a paper bag as he approaches your vehicle.

Way to work the soft-tissue if they have any, a decent cop will give you directions to the closest drug store and let you go without a warning...

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

longde says...

Funny. I live in the bay area, and walk my son to soccer in the park all the time with no worries. We can take easy, peaceful strolls outside in the summer and winter. Looking around, it's no Norman Rockwell, but all I see are american families. We are surrounded by the best schools and universities in the country.

As far as Oakland goes, it's a great city to visit and to live. It's not just me that feels this way, demand for housing there has only increased in the past decade. It's expensive to buy there because people want to live there. Alot more than St. Paul, by the way. Last time I checked, St. Paul also had its crime ridden parts; or can you walk anywhere at night in your town?

So these dystopian pictures being painted on this thread exist in this thread only. In real life, Oakland is a thriving city with alot going for it, and the people with means who actually drive the economy agree, and are voting with their feet and wallets, and corporate headquarters.

I visit Oakland often. The last trip, I took my son on a tour of the USS Hornet, where he got to see the first footsteps of the Apollo astronauts after they returned to Earth. Before that, we visited the world class planetarium and took in great views of the valley. I love going to the great restaurants and live music venues downtown.

Shite like this is the reason I moved out of California, living in good old Saint Paul, Minnesota now. Oxnard California is like a mini-Oakland. Here I have a 3000sf home built in 1901, 1 mile from downtown and no worries. My daughter is 10mos, one due in July, and we so enjoy walks in the neighborhood in the summer. My stepson walks to baseball 1 mile away, we meet him there pushing baby and walking dog, walk home as an American Family. It makes it all worth while. My wife is a CPA but I am a blue collar truck driver.

I think there are ALL KINDS of problems that lead to places like this in Cali... Fresno is almost as bad. Parts of the low desert are very bad, etc. If you want to write 2 page posts defending your view of WHY, maybe that's one of the reasons why as well, and you should define it, man up, and put it in there at number 12 or whatever. Sure "democratic stronghold" is part of the problem. American counter-culture has also been rewarding consumerism above all else for decades. Asians, Latinos, and Blacks cash in today and sell out tomorrow. The west coast is also way too expensive, real estate is too high, and money is the only incentive.

Obviously there is a problem. The left wants to look at answers that sound might or will help but accountability cant be ignored. The right wants to go to war and justify a police state when we are all Americans defining our on future together.

As a side note I might have had 10-15 encounters with these types over the years in and around Oxnard and if their skin was white and I was armed, maybe they would have died...or me. Who knows, there are always more than one way to deal with a problem. In the end the minorities pay the price and it isn't fair. They get worse jobs, their property isnt worth ShXXt, their children receive a poor education. Cookie-cutter whites, in the end, benefit on the left. The drive their Volvo SUVs on highways to schools or doctors or what have you paid for by the masses.

@newtboy
"i know you are but what am i i"?

that had me cackling like a loon.bravo my friend.

please understand guys my comment is in reference to this particular thread, not any previous private or otherwise.

my commentary was also tongue-n-cheek and not to be taken too seriously.
i was poking the hornets nest...like a boss..who also happens to be a dick.

please forgive.

as for conflicting private to public messages.
well..that would infuriate me as well newt.you wont get an argument from me on that point.
that speaks to a persons character and integrity and explains a ton in regards to your attitude towards @chingalera.

our integrity is all we have.
when you take away everything, the only thing left we have to trade is our word.
our honor.
our respect for another human being.
when we lose that trust....we lose everything.

i do not know the particulars on how you all conversed in private.its none of my business and not my place to judge.

but if what you are saying is true newt (and i have no reason to believe it isnt.there is a past precedent in that regard) then i have to ask @chingalera why?

why say one thing in private and then another in public?
that is so disengenuious and un-necessary my man.
you make good solid points..often,and often i agree with them.
so why would invalidate them by interacting with such duplicity?

you cant call out newt for disregarding or dismissing your points because it was YOU who invalidated those points by your interactions with him.

and you know this.
dont act like you dont because i know your smarter than the average bear.so dont insult my intelligence by feigning innocence.

you owe newt an apology.period.

and dont prove @VoodooV right.we both were there when you flamed out and it was ugly.
and you made it ugly by taking it personal.
i never judged you for that..still dont.
but that does not mean i condoned how you played that closing scene out.
real people had real feelings hurt...including you.

now i realize this thread is destroyed and i dont even know who i need to apologize to.
so...
to the original poster:i am truly sorry for this tragic hi-jacking of your thread.

but it appears necessary.

@chingalera i realize that much of what you do is to shock people out of complacency.
to get them to perceive a situation with different goggles.
many times the weapons you use are confrontational language and a persistence that rivals the most glorious case of OCD.

those intentions are noble.
i agree and am of a similar mindset.this is probably why i can read choggie-speak with little trouble.

i understand what you are trying to do.

but how can you expect someone like @newtboy to listen to anything you have to say when you cant keep even basic correspondence open and honest?
it invalidates everything you attempt from then on out.
your words have to have the weight of your integrity behind them for them to have ANY impact.
you lose that and your words become dust.

sounds like you will have to work to gain the respect from @newtboy.i wish you well in that endeavour.

please understand i consider you a friend @chingalera and hearing this has upset me a great deal.

and @VoodooV,
you may be right brother.i do not know what the future brings.hopefully ching will prove you wrong.i know he could if he wanted.

but i disagree with keeping the riff raff out.
i dont mind confrontation or arguments.in fact i LOVE them and @chingalera has a talent for poking the hornets nest and shattering the monotone-vanilla-circle-jerk-clones into a frenzy.

and that my friend..is a good thing.

@chingalera keeps the locals buzzing, constantly challenging pre-concieved notions and ideologies and i love that fucker for that.he keeps this site interesting.his antics bring lurkers to actually comment/post and others who usually side-line to jump in.

all good things.

but...
i cannot abide the darker side.
the hurtful side.
maybe i am being naive'....i always see redemption for those who the entrenched masses see as unredeemable.i always feel i can save those who are truly lost.

i always see the human first and the actions last.

so you may be right.i just hope you are wrong.
maybe this thread will impact my friend and remind him we are all humans.

i dont know.........
i hope though...
i hope.

@ChaosEngine again,as i told newtboy,no argument here.
hopefully this derailed thread has cleared some air and brought the things to the table that needed to be discussed.

which from my viewpoint is about integrity.
you cant admonish people for being egocentric and then turn around and be egocentric yourself.
it weakens the very position you were trying to make in the first place.(ching, not you CE).
it is hypocritical.

i am a dissident.
a radical.
a subversive.
even to the church i am an apostate.
so i understand @chingalera on a certain level.he has never treated me other than a friend and compatriot.so it pains me to see how he deals with those he disagrees with, and just how far he will take a story to a painful conclusion.
this does not give be joy or pleasure.

he is a righteous dude.passionate, sensitive and creative and has soooo much to offer.
im sorry ya'all didnt get to see that side of him.
but maybe thats on him, because you all should.

there is a reason he has been invited back multiple times and its not because he whined about it but rather he truly is an exceptional human being.

maybe he should show that side more.
takes honesty and courage, but that boy has a huge capacity for that.

@chingalera
balls in your court brother.
what ya gonna do?

*note* for all those who read to this point.
cookies and milk will be served in the back storage room.

Lockheed F-35 vs F-18 Super Hornet

newtboy jokingly says...

The smart kid took the $10, bought one F-18 Super Hornet, and took his family to dinner (on the $1 menu) with the rest. He wasn't there arguing the merits of one (non-functional toy) vs the other (more toys than he can play with), he was busy feeding his family.
I'm often upset that our government doesn't see the third options. Apparently it is too complicated for some.

Lockheed F-35 vs F-18 Super Hornet

eric3579 says...

For those like me who was kinda confused about what this was about:

(from YouTube)
In this video, two boys simplify the debate to a true value statement. They both received $10.00 from their grandfather. One bought an F-35, the other got 3 F-18's with everything needed to maintain it, and keep them flying.

This contentious debate in geopolitical circles is focused around joint strike fighter choices. Does a country procure the F-35 or the F-18 Super Hornet? The F-35 is an impressive new fighter, designed to meet the needs of all branches of the military. The challenge is in order to meet everyone's needs, you have to make compromises. For example, once loaded with weapons, the F-35 begins to lose it's stealth abilities. Is it really invisible to radar and how much foil area did they have to give up to maneuverability?

In the end we realize... it's really not that complicated.

How We Deal With Thieves in Brazil

longde says...

Transcript from Reddit:
I translated most of the exchange between the people in the video. It starts at 0:41.
Robber: Stop! Stop, stop, stop. Give me the alarm!
Victim: Okay, okay.
Robber: Give me the alarm, give me the alarm!
Robber points the gun at victims head.
Victim: It's here, it's here.
Robber: Fuck, hurry!
Victim: It's right here, it's right here!
Victim hands over the alarm system key.
Victim: You can take it away, you can take it away!
Other robber approaches say something inaudible.
Victim: No man, I'm not armed.
Robber #2: What?
Victim: I don't have any gun on me, I'm not a cop.
Robber #2 to Robber: Let's go, let's go.
Victim: You guys can take it, take it.
Cop approaches Robber and BAM! BAM! (or pew! pew!, whatever you prefer)
Robber: Ouch! Fuck!
Victim: Thank you police! Thank you police! Thanks a lot!
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell. You're not gonna take away my bike. You're not gonna take it, thank god.
Victim put's helmet on the ground.
Inaudible exchange between victim and cop.
Another cop in black t-shirt steps in and talks to cop hero.
Black tshirt cop: I work for "Guarda". (a division of the police department) Are you a captain?
Cop gets in the car.
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell you son of a bitch.
Robber (whining): I got shot!
Victim (pissed off): You go fuck yourself! You're the one pointing gun at other people's face!
Robber: Oh, I'm gonna die.
Victim: You sure will! You should have already! Son of a bitch.
Robber inaudible, apparently asks someone to get him something to drink.
Victim: You're gonna drink in hell! You're gonna drink the devil!
Victim to other people around: Fuck, I'm going on my way and this asshole comes to rob me.
Victim pick up the helmet.
Victim (to camera): I'm lucky it's still recording. They tried to rob me here.
Victim (on the phone): Just come over here. This guy just tried to rob me and the cop shot him. Come quickly. Just don't tell dad. Come quickly!
Victim hangs up.
Victim: You have to live so you can get beat up in jail!
Victim (to himself): Fucking idiot.
Robber: I'm dying!
Victim: Yeah, you're supposed to! You have to get fucked. You're not the one that likes to rob? Getting a job is something you don't want to, right?! Do you have any idea how much I'm working to pay for this motorcycle?! You have no idea, right! And then you take it away easily!
Victim: And you're lucky that I wanted to get your buddy as well! But don't worry because he's gonna get caught.
Guy in blue t-shirt to victim: Was it red or black that one?
Victim: Red.
Victim (to some cop): Guy wasn't wearing a helmet but I noticed when I looked in the mirror they were up to no good.
Guy in blue t-shit starts patting down the robber.
Robber: Keep your hands off me! Fuck.
Blue t-shit guy reaches for something and hands it over to cop.
Robber to cop: I'm dying sir!
Victim: Oh now you say "sir" right?! You first scare the shit out of other people and now it's all "sir". "Sir" my ass buddy! Now you're gonna get fucked up in hell.
Vicim: How about your buddy? You see. He ran away!
Victim: You wanted to ride some Hornet, right?! (flips off) Here, now you're gonna ride a hornet in hell! (Hornet is a Honda model)
Victim picks up camera
Victim: Now you see this guy. He was going to rob me, now got all fucked up. The cops shot him.
