Conservatives Applaud Chicago's Olympic Bid Failure

littledragon_79 says...

Wow, they literally applauded...what a giant bunch of assholes.

On a side note I think it's a little silly how some people feel like the U.S. is losing (more) international respect or take it so personally just because Chicago didn't get selected. Come on, not every Olympics can be in the U.S. or Europe. It seems almost selfish to expect to win out (not that a little national/hometown pride is a bad thing).

Tom Waits "Hold On"

gwiz665 says...

They hung a sign up in out town
"if you live it up, you won't
live it down"
So, she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Well, the moon was gold, her
Hair like wind
She said don't look back just
Come on Jim
(Chorus)
Oh you got to
Hold on, Hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone is looking for someone to blame
But you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said baby, I still love you
Sometimes there's nothin left to do
Oh you got to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you got to
Just hold on.

Well, God bless your crooked little heart St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken-china voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Well, you build it up, you wreck it down
You burn your mansion to the ground
When there's nothing left to keep you here, when
You're falling behind in this
Big blue world
Oh you go to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You got to hold on
Down by the Riverside motel,
It's 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes
And started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Well your old hometown is so far away
But, inside your head there's a record
That's playing, a song called
Hold on, hold on
You really got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
And just hold on.

Jim Carrey in 1989 talks about Hollywood and stuff

lucky760 says...

I wouldn't call the host horrible. It was pretty audacious of him to just come out and ask if he got into *drugs.

The way the host kept saying "you're back now" makes me wonder about the context of this clip. Was it taped for his small hometown's local station or something?

Fantastic animated building projection

Motorhome Demolition Derby

curiousity says...

That reminds me of when I went back to my hometown to break into the job market after 6 years in the Navy. My girlfriend at the time took me out to the big yearly event: the combine derby (yep, lots of farming around my hometown.)

It was an experience.

Absolute Proof: Obama's Birth Certificate is Real.

Skeeve says...

Lol, you didn't even read the article QM.
"The document is a "certification of birth," also known as a short-form birth certificate. The long form is drawn up by the hospital and includes additional information such as birth weight and parents' hometowns. The short form is printed by the state and draws from a database with fewer details. The Hawaii Department of Health's birth record request form does not give the option to request a photocopy of your long-form birth certificate, but their short form has enough information to be acceptable to the State Department."

Further, "a researcher looking to dig up dirt on Obama instead found a birth announcement that had been published in the Honolulu Advertiser on Sunday, Aug. 13, 1961". The Star Bulletin, Hawaii's other major newspaper, ran a birth announcement the same day.

Either someone went back in time to plant that or Obama is American. I'll side with reality thank you very much.

i'm working at the queensday-activities in my hometown later tonight (a music festival, its not cancelled) but not looking forward to it, very sad news.

btw, the police has said the driver did this on purpose, although it's not yet clear what the killer's motives were. (the killer is now in the hospital, undergoing surgery)

the queens reaction, she seems very upset: http://player.nos.nl/index.php/media/play/tcmid/tcm:5-511242/ )

I think I too will send a stripper to my high school reunion

calvados says...

I happened to be in Hometown for my five, and that was pretty good actually. I hated highschool and wasn't popular but for the reunion I was just happy to see a lot of people I didn't think I'd be especially happy to see, and so much of the old negative attitudes had fallen away from pretty much everybody. I hosted an impromptu party that night, plenty of people attended and it was a great friendly soirée. I haven't seen most of them since but no matter. And oh yes, echoing spoco ^, most of the former underdogs seemed to have carved out nice lives for themselves and most of the shitbirds not so much.

As for the 10, I don't think there was one -- I think people didn't care or else forgot. So be it.

Detroit Struggles as Economy Tanks

volumptuous says...

This is pure sensationalism.

Detroit is my hometown, and the neighborhoods and downtown districts they show in this piece have been abandoned since I was a wee child.

In fact, there is a growing art community, and gay community in Downtown. You can literally buy a house for $1 USD, as long as you sign a contract with the city stating you will do yearly repairs to the house and property. This has spun a lot of new growth downtown.

That old train station tho.. Lots of memories for me. We raved in the place during the late 80's and early 90's when Detroit Techno began. Wild, wild times!
