Copied for Qruel: Crysis: How to Activate DX10 Feature in XP (Videogames Talk Post)

karaidl says...

Sigh... I'm still rocking a 2.0 ghz single core processor with only 1 gig of DDR ram and a 40 GB hard drive. Don't know how fast it is, but it's probably only 4200 rpm. Then I have my 7800 GS (which is an AGP card) and my vastly outdated Audigy Value sound card.

I use msconfig to shut literally almost everything down on XP, leaving only Plug and Play and Windows Audio. Even still, I can't keep up with a lot of new stuff, and as a life-long PC gamer (started when I was 3 - fond memories of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D), with no game consoles, I'm in pain.

At least HL2 will run for me.

Got the Bioshock demo to run alright, but haven't bought the full game.

Hahaha. That's funny stuff. Way to call out an idiot know-it-all.

Way to fucking spoil it for people that haven't played Episode two, Payback.
Also, there are no folders that contain specifically sounds. The only other files for HL2 are a couple of .bin files. Other than that, it's all been copied if you followed the instructions.
And yeah, it's a hack. "Hack: A clever solution to an interesting problem."
Hack doesn't necessarily mean dealing with code and shit, you know.

Valve had every intention for this "hack" (more of a copying of files than anything, if you want sounds, copy them too) to exist.

HL2:Ep3 and Portal2 are one and the same. Gordon Freeman visits Aperture Science next time.

Really hope they do eventually figure out how to get the Portal gun functioning properly in HL2 DM. There's a lot of potential in the mod scene for games centered around some good MP portal action.

Hmm. Notice how when he's just standing there looking at all those Combine soldiers they don't hurt him? Hell, their gunshots don't make any sounds. Also notice that his health is always at 100. That's because when you get hurt, your health automatically goes back up. You can't use a flashlight. There's no voices. Try it for yourself and see.
Yeah, it's cool that you can use the portal gun on a HL2 map. But other than that, this hack blows donkey dick.

Team Fortress 2 Group! (Videogames Talk Post)

pyrex says...

No, gorgon, Steam doesn't charge anything beyond the actual cost of the games. Personally I'd like to see it hanged for crimes against humanity but that's a whole 'nother story.

Finished HL2: Episode Two yesterday for the second time, just gunned it through to listen to the commentary track. Pretty different to Episode One, a lot more gunplay and some interesting story developments but still too short. I'm glad they're ending the story arch with Episode Three. Just hope it doesn't take another year to develop.

My card is also a Geforce (256MB 6200), so I think it should be OK. Not quite maxed out, but should still look decent. Looking forward to playing it.
Now if only I could upgrade my DSL...!

In reply to this comment by jimnms:
The processor speeds are for Intel Pentium 4 CPUs. My CPU is an AMD X2 4400+ which is 2.2GHz and it plays TF2 on max settings. I also have a 128MB Geforce 7800GT and 2GB of RAM. The HL2 engine scales down pretty well on on older machines. I played the original HL2 on a Pentium 4 2.66GHz. It wasn't quite maxed out, but it still looked great.

In reply to this comment by firefly:
Hey, thanks for that info. I don't quite have the processing power (only 2.4) but I've got twice the recommended RAM, and a fairly decent videocard.

On another note, have you read "The Weatherman" by Steve Thayer? One of the characters, Dixon Bell, is a meteoroligist in Minnesota who is accused and arrested for being a serial killer. His home town is Vicksburg, MS. I mention that 'cause I saw you on the Sifter map...I mean, I don't think YOU'RE a serial killer!

Looks like January...

Oh and all for 30 bucks!
I'm sure that price will be jacked up by Microsoft but that's what Valve wants to release it at
