Mes cours de bio (biology class)

flavioribeiro says...

Lyrics:

me dévoila toutes ses belles dents.

Me regardant, elle a rigolé,

on a participé à l'évolution!

When I was in school,
There was a girl who sat next to me
Since she was female and I was male,
I decided to make her my fiancée.
But, having paid no attention to my biology class,
To make myself seen, I played the idiot.
I leaned towards her and declared
The following words, a little bit as they came to me

Oh, like a coccolithophorid
Stuck between the Tertiary and Cretaceous
The beating of my distraught heart
Made me understand that you were my girl

She looked at me, dumbfounded. I was afraid I had said something stupid
Then her face with a dazzling smile
Revealed to me all her beautiful teeth
And when the teacher addressed immunology
She responded to me, not at all shy:

If you are a coccolithophorid
Stuck between the Tertiary and the Cretaceous, then I am a trilobite dead
For at least 200 million years

Apparently, she followed better than I
The few biology classes that I attended
But while the class drew antibodies
I couldn't resign myself to forgetting her body
So putting together the few pieces of paper I had
I succeeded in replying:

Genetic polyallelism expresses itself
Through the phenotypic diversity of individuals
I ranted these few words to tell you that you have the most beautiful eyes that I have ever seen

Looking at me, she laughed
And responded to me on a little piece of paper

Genetic polyallelism expresses itself
Through the phenotypic diversity of individuals
These few words, I know, will impress you
And I expect to see you this evening after class

And walking on the stratigraphic scale
Flouting geological time
Our hypothalamus boiling
We participated in evolution!

This reminds me of Sean Connery in The Untouchables where Ness is trying to recruit him. The whole time, in each scene cut, the top button of his shirt goes open, closed, open, closed, open, closed. Once you notice it, it really distracting.

The Red Tent - Intro

Farhad2000 says...

Disclosure : I ripped and uploaded this small scene from the start of the film. Because me, and my pet rock only seem to know about it.

This is a severely underrated cinema classic.

Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. Among his most famous and most important films are his four final features: Letyat zhuravli (The Cranes Are Flying, 1957); Neotpravlennoye pismo (The Unsent Letter, 1959); Ya Kuba (I Am Cuba, 1964); and Krasnaya palatka (The Red Tent, 1969). These are marked by very long, complex takes filled with startling, often surreal images and among the most virtuosic camerawork of that or any other era.

I can't recommend this movie enough - a mixture of real life drama with philosophical lessons about leadership, guilt and moving on. It is based on the story of Umberto Nobile, on May 23, 1928, Nobile set out to land on the North Pole. Severe weather and problems forced delays, during such an attempt, Nobile's airship crashed with it's crew on the ice on May 25th, close to 81° 14' latitude north, 28° 14' longitude east.

The crew managed to salvage several items from the crashed airship, including food, a radio transmitter and, famously, a red tent. The drifting sea ice later took the survivors towards Foyn and Broch islands. Incompetence on the part of Captain Romagna meant that the survivors' distress signals were not picked up for several weeks, and despite the presence of Italian ski-troops on board in case of just such an emergency, no effort was made by the Italian authorities to mount a search, let alone a rescue effort.

The film stars Peter Finch, Sean Connery, Claudia Cardinale and Hardy Krüger. The soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone.

Truly a great ScFi movie. I had never heard of this movie back in the day, I stumbled across the DVD of it and bought it on a whim, I love SciFi, and the chance to see Sir. Connery in a cheesy 70's flick just begged the cheap purchase. I instantly loved the movie though. It is indeed full on 70's cheesyness, but it works well.

Farhad2000 says...

If you haven't met a woman that, deep in your heart felt deserves a righteous slap, even though you hated the thought afterwards. You haven't really lived.

The fact that Sean Connery has been married to the same woman for 31 years. Seems to just fly over people 's heads.

'The Longest Day' - Great Moments in Cinema

Farhad2000 says...

Clip from the 1995 colorized version of the 1962 war film epic The Longest Day produced by Daryl F Zanuck, featuring an early appearance from a young Sean Connery, right before the success of Dr. No, also features Kenneth More.

* During the filming of the landings at Omaha Beach, the American soldiers appearing as extras didn't want to jump off the landing craft into the water because they thought it would be too cold. Robert Mitchum, who played General Norm Cota, finally got disgusted with them and jumped in first, at which point the soldiers had no choice but to follow his example.

* The Rupert paradummies used in the film were far more elaborate and lifelike than those actually used for the decoy parachute drop (Operation Titanic) which were actually just canvas or burlap sacks filled with sand. In the real operation six Special Air Service soldiers jumped with the dummies and played recordings of loud battle noises to distract the Germans.

* At $10,000,000, this film was the most expensive black-and-white film made until 1993, when Schindler's List was released. (Source: Turner Classic Movies).

* The bagpiper is the same person who participated in the real assault on D-Day.
