Guy goes to hospital for 10 minutes, gets $7000 bill.

I'm not sure this guy is entirely telling the truth. He says in another video that he suffered a concussion in addition to the facial laceration. If he was admitted to the emergency dept with altered mentation in addition to the obvious trauma he likely would have had head/brain imaging with non-contrast CT. This in and of itself is several hundred dollars. I don't know if he was admitted as a trauma by ambulance, but if he had temporary loss of consciousness or altered mentation then the EMT/paramedics may have called in a high level trauma, which by default activates multiple services and personnel including anesthesia, general/trauma surgery and radiology. People spend way more than $7,000 on things like cars and travel. Why complain about medical treatment at one of America's leading private hospitals? I've worked at Stanford - I'm sure he was evaluated within 10 minutes of arriving at a bay in the ED. Stanford is a private, for-profit hospital with level 1 trauma services. He may have had a prolonged wait either because his status was triaged downwards for other traumas or the ED may have consulted dermatology or plastic surgery for the facial laceration repair. They may have been waiting for radiology clearance as well.

Did he live?

It is a 99.99% certainty that he survived. Viewing it slowly shows that he only took a glancing blow from the corner of the truck on his shoulder/side. It looks horrifying, but ultimately speaking this guy may have gotten off with just some serious bruises and a case of road rash. At worst he broke his arm, shoulder, a few ribs, and got a concussion from having his fool head smacked into the curb. Given how overweight this guy was I would guess he came out just fine considering he deserved to be splattered all over the road like a garbage bag full of Spaghetti-Os.

How to kick the shit out of somebody

xxovercastxx says...

I was just revisiting some of my videos and decided to do some research about this debate.

First, from a medical standpoint, basketball and baseball are considered contact sports as contact can and does occur. Boxing, MMA, NFL, etc are known as collision sports, where players impacting each other or the ground is a goal rather than incidental.

If you look at this report by Johns Hopkins University, they indicate 69 of the 171 matches in their sample set ended with injuries: 40%. That seems high until you look at the next page and see that 46 of those 69 injuries (48%) were cuts. In most cases, cuts just need time to heal and have no long-term effect save perhaps some scarring. If we take those out, we're left with 13% of the matches ending with injuries that have potential to be serious. There has been one death in sanctioned MMA but it was after the release of this study so it's not reflected.

Note their conclusion paragraph at the end: " Mixed Martial Arts competitions have changed dramatically since the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993. The overall injury rate in MMA competitions is now similar to other combat sports, including boxing. Knockout rates are lower in MMA competitions than in boxing. This suggests a reduced risk of TBI in MMA competitions when compared to other events involving striking."

Unfortunately I can't find statistics on the NFL that can be directly compared, but here is an article talking about injuries. 60% of players report having suffered a concussion. This Wikipedia page cites statistics that the rate of direct fatalities has dropped to 4.3 per year on average from 1991-2006. I think these stats include people playing in their yards with no pads or helmets, though, so it's not easy to make a comparison to sanctioned MMA.

Canadian principal wrestles student to the ground

blankfist says...

I'm not sure I understand why people are taking up for the principal and condemning the kid and not the other way around? This was reasonably and observably a violent abuse of power. This principal is a civil servant. His duties are to serve the public interests in education. His duties are NOT to act as police officer and give kids concussions.

If this kid was in fact taking upskirt photos on his cell, that doesn't automatically award the civil servant a right to bash the kids head on the floor. Let's be reasonable. Kids do stupid shit. I understand they need to be punished, but it should be something according to their bad doings. I hate it when adults take an opportunity to exact some street justice on a kid because the kid is smaller than they are, and then when the kid gets all jacked up the adults say "he had it coming."

I can't laugh at this. Her head hit the ground with tremendous force (hence the lost weave). Considering the momentum generated by her above average mass, that is very likely a concussion. Head injuries are no joke; ask Natasha Richardson's family.
It's ok Ark, I'll laugh for both of us.

Pro Boxing is much more dangerous than Amateur, which is more about scoring points. Like fencing.

He is a better boxer than me so I say:
Kill it with FIRE!!!
Or perhaps a sword duel would be a better choice as "there can be only one" Ivan Drago!
But seriously I frown on this because of the ramifications for the kid when he gets in a fight with other kids his age and gives some poor kid a concussion or a broken nose. He is three and will do what he has seen and been taught, he doesn't get the problems with it as he is too young to have developed those regions of the brain yet.
And as a boxer he might never develop it, too many hits in the noggin aint good for the brain
>> ^NordlichReiter:
Work on that foot work, keep your chin down.
I frown on this, what happens if the kid breaks a metacarpal, trust me that sucks not matter what age you are.

Dog plays with deer

entr0py says...

That is very cute, though I'd be afraid of the doggie getting concussed though if it were mine.

I'm really relieved to hear it wasn't just a baby deer that wandered into someone's yard and was trapped when they closed the gate. Still, it's hard to tell if it's really playing, or actually frightened and trying to defend it's self in an enclosed space.
