The Town Where Gap Year Kids Went To Die

Asmo says...

Seems to be a rambling diatribe with no clear path other than "tourism changes stuff"...

Think the vid title was a little clickbait-y though... = P

Scaling A Climbing Wall With No Hands

Great Moments in Congressional Hallway History

MilkmanDan says...

I do agree, but on the other hand sometimes these things go well beyond legitimate "questions about your actions / statements / plans".

Subject even the most patient person in the world to enough stupid / leading / clickbait-y questions, and eventually they'll get annoyed with it. Which is of course the entire point, so that they can clip that reaction out of context and run it with a headline like "Watch as Senator X flies off the handle after being asked a simple question!"

Some of these incidents are definitely sleazy politicians trying to weasel out of scrutiny to the greatest degree possible. But I'm sure that many of them are the political version of Marshawn Lynch just wanting to do his goddamn job without being constantly peppered with pointless questions from the media. And we all thought he was awesome for showing up to media days and saying only "I'm just here so I don't get fined", right?

Not trying to trivialize the political arena down to the level of a public spectacle like professional sports, but I think the comparison is at least a little valid.

If you don't want to be a public figure who is constantly questioned about your actions, statements, and plans, don't run for public office. Not one of them was drafted into public service, and they are compensated exceedingly well for the privilege. That goes for both parties.
As elected representatives, it's part of the job to explain yourself any time you're in public, and the halls of congress are public spaces.

Why It's Almost Impossible to Run a Two-Hour Marathon

dannym3141 says...

At no point in the video was there an explanation that came close to answering why it is almost impossible to run a two hour marathon. Or why only a handful of people could ever come close to it.

In fact, a lot of parts seem like they were created in a rush. At one point he says that mid 60s is "nowhere near" 70 or 80. When the average is 40? Is the scale logarithmic? If so it wasn't mentioned.

I'm very grateful for the information i did learn in the video, it was a nice little bit of info about running and runners. But it fell far short of investigating the 2 hour mile or answering the questions it posed. I wish videosift will not become a home for clickbait.

Navy Seal commander gives some of the best advice

dannym3141 says...

With respect, I don't think clickbait style titles work very well with long videos. For example, the title made me question 'what is the advice about?' but when i opened the video it needed a 20 minute commitment to find out. A better description would help me to know whether this is something i would be interested in watching.

Porn Police

Nephelimdream says...

So fucking downvote it. I know the thumbnail of puppies and kittens, along with the title of "this is specific clickbait for newtboy" can be misleading.

What the he'll is wrong with people today that they think that it's funny to just be as loud, infantile, and dumb as humanly possible? The next presidential election isn't for almost 4 years, guys, tone it down for a while.

The Man Who Never Clicks

Epic Street Hood Fight

Payback says...

One might argue that people that see racism in facetious double entendre clickbait titles should just chill.

Drachen_Jager said:

So they're "Hoods" because they're black?

White kids play with fireworks too. What do you call them? Boys will be boys, kids blowing off steam, or something even more innocuous?

Is there a #racism tag? Not for the video, for the OP.

"TODAY ON THE INTERNET"

ChaosEngine says...

"clickbait is written by a human"

Well, not necessarily. Not because the kind of people who write this bullshit are sub-human (although they might be), but because machine written articles are becoming increasingly popular and harder to spot.

On one hand, this is great. It means that actual writers don't have to waste their time on this bullshit.

On the other hand, the prospect of millions of clickbait articles generated at the touch of a button is terrifying.

The science is in: Exercise isnt the best way to lose weight

ChaosEngine says...

There are millions of people all over the world who do this very thing all the time. It's a myth perpetuated by TV shows like "the biggest loser".

What's the purpose of the video? Generating ad revenue for Vox. They're a business after all. But secondary to that, I think the purpose of the video is simply to educate people about the importance of nutrition in weight loss. You would be amazed at the number of people who don't understand it.

I don't think you could really call it clickbait (other than the fact that everything is clickbait, so the term becomes meaningless). In fact, it's almost the opposite of clickbait... the main point is given away in the title. It's not like it was called "you won't believe this one amazing weight loss method" or some shit.

TheFreak said:

I don't recall anyone claiming the path to losing weight is exercise alone. This video is based on a straw man argument.

TheFreak says...

I don't recall anyone claiming the path to losing weight is exercise alone. This video is based on a straw man argument.

It's just as irresponsible to claim that exercise plays no significant part in weight loss. There just aren't definitive results yet from studies of how exercise affects metabolism. So we can't draw conclusions.

So what's the purpose of this video? There's a message at the end that we need to push politicians on food policy. So does this video provide biased interpretation for a political agenda? Maybe I was wrong on that count. But then, what IS the point of this video? They can't be trying to convince people to lose weight from diet alone. There is no reasonable study that makes that conclusion.

Maybe it's a clickbait video. What it is not, is a reasonable analysis of the available data. Because any reasonable analysis says, "we don't know yet, so diet AND exercise."

But I agree about HIIT. It is personally the only way I can stay at a healthy weight. Along with careful nutrition.

ChaosEngine said:

What "political agenda " are they pushing? Eat less?

And it's a YouTube video... of course the science is simplified.

The fact is that people DO think that exercise allows them to eat what they like (especially sugar) when it doesn't.

HIIT helps, but diet is still important.
