Hypocrites... the whole lot of ya! (Wtf Talk Post)

videosiftbannedme says...

>> ^swampgirl:
Let's ask Videosiftbannedme? The dirty selflinker turned out alright didn't he?

I don't if I turned out "alright" per se. The jury is still out on that one.

As for the topic, no, I don't agree with "un-banning" him, even if agreed on via a poll. While true I got banned for being ignorant and not reading the rules regarding self-linking, my ban was due to my own mistake. I didn't repeatedly tell the admin to fuck off, throw a hissy fit because I couldn't have another channel, and basically piss off half the Sift with my rambunctiousness. I understand your position and how you feel about it being hypocritical, SG. But by posting Choggie's videos (and even making fun of them, if an admin did so), they aren't being hypocritical. Being hypocritical would be doing exactly what you postulated earlier: "un-banning" Choggie. (I know you've since changed your position, of which I now support). If Choggie wants to be part of the community again, then let him prove his worth by creating a new account, and following the rules like the rest of the boys and girls here. (No condescension inferred; I just like using different verbiage).

If Choggie wants to post his new fangled Cajun-cookin' show on YouTube, then you have to expect someone from here to post it...admins included.

And hey, if we are on the path to un-ban-ination, can I get my old account reinstated? j/k

(Oh, and I love it when you talk dirty, Swampy. "Dirty self-linker" I'll be playing with my Joydick tonight with that one... )

*update: Actually, strike my comment regarding "even if agreed to via a poll." This is a democracy after all. If the majority wins, then so be it. But I think he should have some sort of account restriction forcing the use of good grammar and punctuation.

UK Jewish MP: Israel acting like Nazis in Gaza

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Boy some of you are naive. Do you really think that if Isreal bulldozed its security measures and retreated like good little kids to whatever borders you THINK would satisfy the Palestinians that anything would change? You think the Palestinians would be good little boys and girls if the UN was there as a 'peacekeeping' force? Just as the Africans what they think of the UN as a 'peacekeeping' force. The things you think would bring peace would be a bloodbath of Khamir Rouge proportions.

I stick to my original thoughts on this matter. All Palestinians should be forcibly relocated to British or American territory because those countries 'took' thier land away. All Isrealis should be forcibly relocated to Sicily because it was Italy's fault the Jews lost thier land hundreds of years ago. Isreal, 'Palestine' and the surrounding area will be unpopulated and turned into a big international museum where no one is allowed to live.

Five Biggest LIES About Christianity

smooman says...

I'd hate to create a blanket statement, but almost all of the time theism (specifically Christianity) is "debunked" or ridiculed or debated or what have you, the fuel for those arguments are immature theologies that dont belong outside of children's Sunday school.

Pinky put it nicely and went further by goin into a lil detail of some mature theologies.

Look, if I still thought God was a heavenly version of Santa Claus, making his list and checking it twice for the naughty boys and girls to send to hell, then I'd would maintain that Christianity was preposterous. But these childish theologies are simply that, childish.

I've got a close friend who is an atheist of sorts; believes that there is something greater than him, a Maker behind the universe giving us purpose, but isnt so sure about religion in general. Guess that makes him an agnostic i dunno. But we have great discussions about such things and have a wonderful mutual respect for each others belief systems

In short its really just boring and redundant to hear the same debunk fodder.

Here's a tip, instead of assaulting someone elses world views or belief systems and making presuppositions, ask questions. I, and others I'm sure, would be glad to answer to the best of our knowledge and then you might have a better understanding of why we believe what we believe.

Nas - I can

Norsuelefantti says...

I know I can
Be what I want to be
If I work hard at it
I'll be where I want to be
[Kids]
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I want a be (be what I want a be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I want a be (I'll be where I want a be)

Be, B-Boys and girls, listen up
You can be anything in the world, in God we trust
An architect, doctor, maybe an actress
But nothing comes easy it takes much practice
Like, I met a woman who's becoming a star
She was very beautiful, leaving people in awe
Singing songs, Lena Horn, but the younger version
Hung with the wrong person
got her strung on that heroin
cocaine sniffing up drugs all in her nose...
Coulda died, so young, now looks ugly and old
No fun cause now when she reaches for hugs people hold they breath
Cause she smells of corrosion and death
Watch the company you keep and the crowd you bring
Cause they came to do drugs and you came to sing
So if you gonna be the best, I'm a tell you how,
Put your hands in the air, and take a vow

I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I want a be (be what I want a be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I want a be (I'll be where I want a be)

Be, B-Boys and girls, listen again
This is for grown looking girls who's only ten
The ones who watch videos and do what they see
As cute as can be, up in the club with fake ID
Careful, 'fore you meet a man with HIV
You can host the TV like Oprah Winfrey
Whatever you decide, be careful, some men be
Rapists, so act your age, don't pretend to be
Older than you are, give yourself time to grow
You thinking he can give you wealth, but so
Young boys, you can use a lot of help, you know
You thinking life's all about smoking weed and ice
You don't want a be my age and can't read and write
Begging different women for a place to sleep at night
Smart boys turn to men and do whatever they wish
If you believe you can achieve, then say it like this

Be, be, 'fore we came to this country
We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys
It was empires in Africa called Kush
Timbuktu, where every race came to get books
To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans
Asian, Arabs and gave them gold when
Gold was converted to money it all changed
Money then became empowerment for Europeans
The Persian military invaded
They heard about the gold, the teachings, and everything sacred
Africa was almost robbed naked
Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships
Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot off they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?
If the truth is told, the youth can grow
Then learn to survive until they gain control
Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes
Read more learn more, change the globe
Ghetto children, do your thing
Hold your head up, little man, you're a king
Young Princess when you get your wedding ring
Your man is saying "She's my queen"

My wife is special AND the stereotype is WAY off.

I've dated LOTS of girls and never have I ever gone out with somebody like what Chris Rock describes. I have to say, speaking broadly, that my experience, my concept, my picture of "the feminine creature" if you will is completely different from Chris Rock's.

I believe, for the most part, that aside from anatomy, I find that there is very little difference between boys and girls, at least on a deep level. I guess what I mean is that there is more difference between say two girls than there are between say a guy and a girl, and that a guy and a girl may have WAY more in common than two guys.

I've almost always dated girls that I had at least SOMETHING in common with, so I may have a skewed perspective.

Also my perspective is undoubtedly skewed because I was raised to believe in gender equality. That probably is a big part of the reason why I see any differences between boys and girls as being very vague, and slight.

Now having said all that, here's my (sexist) view on women:
- women can be moody. PMS is kind of scary. But they're also intelligent and self sufficient, and can recognize their own unreasonableness. But they are still allowed to be upset. Fuck, I get in a bad mood from time to time too.

- women aren't as strong (physically) as men. (given the same lifestyle, activity level, etc) this makes me sad, because i am not strong, but i'm stronger than unathletic girls. I would hate to be weaker than i already am.

- doubtlessly because of social conditioning, girls are more likely to understand their own feelings than guys. I am down with people who are into their own feelings. Especially when they know about the little things that make them happy. Girls know those things, and will tell you if you are nice to them. I like that.

...

wow, I can't really think of too many more things that I can say blanket statement about girls. I've dated rational ones, I've dated depressed ones, I've dated super-rational ones.... but... that was all their own personalities, not something that I would say about all girls.

...

Now my wife, on the other hand, is a completely different story. ... I think that if you take the Chris Rock routine, add in a very healthy dose of mutual respect, and then completely reverse the roles, you'd be closer to the dynamic in our relationship.

Oh, yeah, and we both make sense when we argue. But then again, we both are students of consciousness and AI and perception and neuropsychology, so we both recognize one very important thing. We know that our brains are really imperfect (wetware is so kludgy, especially with horomones and mood altering neurotransmitters just sloshing around). We trust and respect each other enough to be able to see that we both think we're right, even if only one of us could (logically) be right.

If it is not a strict logical argument, if the things at stake are moral or emotional, we have both been through enough shit with enough people that we can take a breath, and a step back, and try and figure out why we disagree.

...

But yeah, that's the sort of arguments we have. But always kind, and always respectful and caring.

...

In particular I really REALLY disagreed with Chris Rock when he was talking about looking yourself in the mirror and saying "What can I do to please her" every day. Fuck you. Jessica does so many things for me that make me so happy. Little things like putting my bowl and spoon out for me for my breakfast in the morning, or scratching my head when we're watching a movie (or videosift), just lots and lots of thoughtful nice things, it's almost like she's getting up every morning and trying to think of ways to please ME.

And what's better then that- when I DO think of something to do that makes her happy, it's like I was a saint or something. I tell you, I love my life. Oh I mean I love my WIFE.

Thomas Friedman on Real Time

volumptuous says...

Friedman's a weird bird.

He goes from an incredibly thoughtful person when talking about climate change or economics, but then he also can be one of the biggest assholes on the planet, as in the runup to the invasion of Iraq.

The blogosphere has been measuring 6-month periods of the US occupying Iraq as a "Friedman unit", due to him telling us every six months or so, that we're going to only need another six months in Iraq to "turn it around" etc.

And his worst quote must be the infamous "suck on this".

In an interview with Charlie Rose in 2003, Friedman said:

"What they needed to see was American boys and girls going house to house, from Basra to Baghdad, um and basically saying, "Which part of this sentence don't you understand?" You don't think, you know, we care about our open society, you think this bubble fantasy, we're just gonna to let it grow? Well, Suck. On. This."

Please read that profile response, I do not think that atheists and agnostics have to be amoral, there are just consequences that arise from certain philosophical positions about morality. I was a Atheist for many many years, and my best friend is an agnostic, I have no hated or intolerance about them at all. In fact, in a lot of ways, they are still my brothers and sisters as I am a child of doubt and speculation. At times, I find I have more in common with no belief than with believers. I am a person that is always questioning everything. That isn't always a desirable thing in a church setting and I usually rub people the wrong with with my Socratic questioning of their foundational beliefs. We are all trying to find out those pressing questions of why we are here and who we really are. I just try and make sure people aren't lying to themselves or not thought about it all the way through...myself included. My mission statement in life is very much like that of Socrates; “I know nothing”. It is only when you know nothing that you are free to learn anything.
