Dragons - Overwatch Animated Short

artician says...

This is showcasing the New Generic. Blizzard used to push the boundaries for hyper-realism in CG, but everything from designs to animations in this is wrapped tightly in a security-blanket of technical and conceptual cliche.

Sign of the times, but I'm still filing a formal complaint...

Blizzard's CGI dept really is top notch.

Shame they keep employing 14-year-old boys to write their stories.

RetroAhoy: Quake

shagen454 says...

Yeah, I remember Quakeworld... I also remember Mplayer, Kali, Gamespy, TEN (Total Entertainment Network which was my favorite back then). Dial in and join chatrooms for Duke Nukem/Quake (1&2) matches and such... I'm not sure what happened with that, it almost seemed like it was a little too ahead of it's time (subscription fee and all). They also had a pretty cool exclusive MMO @ 1997/1998 called Dark Sun Online based on the AD&D franchise.

Hilarious to think that services like TEN & Mplayer seized to exist because of the example that Blizzard (one of my favorite developers) set with Battlenet being intrinsically a part of the game. It's a lot more convenient but I do miss those broad services & community that came with it. And now with all of this online only as basically an anti-piracy measure... every company has some sort of shite program that you have to download and log into. It sucks comparatively!!

Remember, QuakeWorld? I remember id Software made this client to make the game much better online for dial-upers like me who had crappy GTE phone services (e.g., 21600-26400 connections on faster modems!).

if blizzard were 100% honest with us

Exactly, in the same way that Pandarans from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003) are a clone of Kung Fu Panda (2008). I don't know how Blizzard so consistently rips off the future.

Diablo (December 1996) is a clone of Baldur's Gate (December 1998)?

Maybe Diablo is a clone of DnD, but that's a stretch unless you are willing to say that every CRPG (and action RPG) is a clone of DnD...

He says (posing as a Blizzard exec) @3:44 --
"all of our franchises are based off of other people's games:
Hearthstone -> Magic the Gathering
Starcraft and Warcraft -> Warhammer
Diablo -> Baldur's Gate
Overwatch -> Team Fortress 2"

I can't comment on the first and last. Star/Warcraft being influenced by Warhammer makes sense. Diablo being influenced by Baldur's Gate... Not so much (I'd even disagree with saying Diablo as a *franchise* being influenced by BG as a *franchise*, ignoring the timing issue of original Diablo vs original BG).

I too was disappointed with Diablo not being "RPG enough" compared to, say, the Ultima series. But once I got past that, I actually had a lot of fun with it (and Diablo 2).

Did he say that? I didn't watch it. I remember myself ranting about Diablo 1 not being "enough of an RPG", and my room mate at the time had to point out it was never trying to be. I dunno.. I was a dumb young man at one point, too, but at least I knew which game came first, (though that might be the benefit of having lived through it).

"Convenience Store" sketch from Kids in the Hall

ulysses1904 says...

Yeah none of their monologues ever worked for me. They were all just filler and none of them were memorable like the sketches. I saw them in Boston in 2000 on their first reunion tour. We drove through a freakin blizzard to get there but that made it that much more special. We thought they were done for good after 1994 so it was cool to see them.

Anything they have done since is painful to watch so I bought the complete series on DVD and just skip the monologues.

SquidCap said:

I really should make my edited version of the series.. Cut out every single Scott Thompson gay monologue out. Not because i hate gays or Scott but having a 7 minute touching monologue in the middle of 20 minute comedy sketch show just does not work. Plus i hate the fake lisp, no matter if it's woman or man.
