Texas's new 31 billion dollar seawall to be constructed

newtboy says...

So…a state that denies climate change wants twenty billion of federal tax money (60 billion+ before its finished) to protect the tax exempt industry most responsible for climate change from the destruction is brings that they deny is real….all on taxpayer money, not a bit industry funded.

I grew up in Houston/Galveston. This is stupidity. There’s no way in hell they’ll ever stop hurricane flooding. The barriers would need to be 30 ft tall, not 5. They would also need to redirect numerous rivers that outflow through the coast, and find a way to remove unfathomable amounts of flood waters coming from land. I was there for Alicia, a relatively small hurricane in the 80’s, and all of Houston was 5 ft under water, with the bayous 40ft above their channels. That water flows into the Galveston area….behind these barriers.

This is a massive boondoggle that will never be built for dozens of reasons, but will still make numerous politicians and their families disgustingly rich, and may eventually partially protect some high value real estate, but never the entire coast. That’s today’s Texas. It bears noting, Texas is nearly $50 billion in debt with a crumbling electric grid, failing water system, no social services, and likely still $10 billion away from finishing their useless failed border fence….but plan to spend at least another $10 billion of state funds on this. How, exactly?

They were incredibly closer than you are.
Nope, you don't get 11 degrees...well, I don't, and I did well in math classes through AP calculus and statistics.

3ft rise in 40ft run is 4.3 degrees, or a 7.5% slope. Look it up yourself....

https://www.blocklayer.com/riseruneng.aspx

It's NOWHERE NEAR 11 degrees. The stage floor would be about 8' high to be 11 degrees at that length. It's actually 3' high.

They weren't accurate on the incline though.

You can measure it on the screen if you like. A bit of trigonometry and you'll come up with a number a bit over 11 degrees.

Speed limit in most urban areas is 50km/h (30mph). Braking distance at that speed is ~23m(70ft). There's no way he could have stopped.

Even at a more conservative 30km/h (~20mph) braking distance is still 12m(~40ft).

AeroMechanical said:

Also, I see it as a reasonable (though stretched in this instance) rule of thumb that in a dense urban environment, if you have to swerve to avoid a pedestrian rather than just braking, you weren't driving carefully enough.

I was on honeymoon in Germany and Poland and spent a night on the rhine. There was MAJOR river traffic as well as train tracks on both sides. Lots of barges even hauling 40ft containers

To be released on the 12-12-12 - A Madness Shared by Two, is not only the true untold story about the lives of Sabina and Ursula Eriksson, alongside the murder of Glenn Hollinshead, based on a critique re-examination of the BBC’s Madness in the Fast Lane documentary that had 7 million viewers [with a conservative estimate of around a further 15 million people having since watched this film via the internet and on websites such as YouTube],glued to their TV screens watching the twin sisters propelling themselves into the fast lane of the oncoming traffic on the UK’s-M6 motorway, as Ursula manages to throw herself under the wheels of a 40ft articulated lorry travelling at 60mph, that seems to swallow her up and spit her lifeless looking body back out of its rear end. It is also the result of a thorough investigation into what might have really happened on those fateful days that led up to this tragic slaying of an innocent man. We challenge the “Official Storyline” and expose what really occurred just hours before M6 dash, for it is here for the first time we expose the Eriksson sisters were “arrested” under the Mental Health Act, though this vital caught on film evidence was edited out of the original BBC films. This will come as a great surprise to many people who questioned; ‘...how was it possible Sabina could have been released from hospital after only five hours’ following their ‘suicide attempt’ on the M6? We also reveal that the coroner’s report shows that the injuries inflicted on Glenn, indicate more than one person probably killed him and that Sabina could be totally innocent. Yet this obvious evidence seems to have been brushed under the carpet, or at the very least, it was never challenged. We explain how these twins were very likely embroiled in a major drugs smuggling ring and that they had been under “Obbo” [police observation] prior to the M6 incident, and was probably so for quite some period of time. As a result of our findings, legal action is now being sought and brought against the police and other related authoritative bodies by the Hollinshead family.

I truly apologise to those who find this "sport" entertaining. I have tried - honest - but it seems to me that with a line to the target to follow, a target the size of a small car and some "helpers" with brushes to speed up/slow down the projectile, anybody, even drunk, could become proficient at it in about an hour. A similar game is played on cruise ships for the elderly to partake of "strain free exercise". Seriously, why is this an olympic event? We might aswell have dwarf throwing or spitting the furthest, or how fast can you go down an ice track, flat on your back, on a plank of wood - oops, sorry, think we have that one already.

Just a couple things. You don't know what you're talking about, and therefore you SHOULD have said such.

Curling is not shuffleboard. This statement alone proves your complete lack of understanding.

I bet, even sober, you would spend the first hour playing mostly flat on your ass. Even skating does not prepare you for what you need to do in curling.

Ever play pool? Imagine making a two bumper bank shot from 40ft away. (adjusted for size difference of cueball vs. rock)

The sweeps are there to stop the rock from curling until the shooter calls it. The sweeps are an extension of him/her. It is teamwork in it's purest form.

...and yes, you are insulting people who love the SPORT by belittling the skill of the players.

ps. about the luge comment "flat on your back, on wood, etc etc" I have never heard of a spitting contest where someone could be killed because of a split-second lapse in judgment.

Ultimate Warehouse Failure

shadownc says...

I work in a huge distribution warehouse. We had some contractors running fiber optic cabling for us a couple of years ago and one of their guys accidentally broke off a sprinkler head. I seem to recall that they said it was only his 2nd or 3rd day on the job. He was about 40ft up in the air on a mechanical lift, so when he broke the sprinkler he got drenched for a good 30-40 secs while he lowered the lift. The water that comes out of those pipes is absolutely nasty.
