Romancing the Drone or "Aerial Citizen Reduction Program"

Yogi says...

Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki, who is Anwar al-Awlakis 16 year old son was targeted and killed. Born in Denver he was looking for his father and had sat down to dinner. He died along with his 17 year old cousin. It's called murder of the innocent.

Also they don't end any threat at all, they create more and more terrorists daily. Just ask anyone who's town has been hit by a Drone attack.

VoodooV said:

I don't see what the deal is quite honestly. We don't wait for due process if a citizen takes a bunch of hostages or goes on a killing spree. If we see the opportunity to end the threat, we end the threat

If it is reasonable to attempt a capture this american actively working with Al Queda, then cool, but I'm guessing that it isn't a realistic plan so I just don't see what the issue is here.

Boy Stands up at City Council on Bullying

MilkmanDan says...

As a kid I got bullied, but it sounds like this kid has it worse. One thing that really struck me the first time I saw an "it gets better" PSA was that those kinds of spots can apply to bullied kids in addition to LGBT kids. Glad to see something like the evolution of that.

To me, it seems like we've got something institutionally wrong with schools that allows bullying to be as prevalent as it is. I say that because in my experience and that of most other people I know that were bullied, things are at their worst from roughly middle school to early-mid high school (say, 12 to 17 years old). Usually the senior year is noticeably better than those before it, and then the experience at college is like the difference between night and day. Obviously increasing maturity levels are responsible for some of that, but not all.

To me, administrators and teachers need to take this a lot more seriously. Good for this kid for getting in the school board's face and making them feel uncomfortable, because the status quo clearly doesn't make things any better.

Oh, and a hearty /second to Yogi's comment about the title.

The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America

So much of this is simply factually incorrect or misleading.

First of all, in 1910, the school year was only 99 days in length. Only half of eligible students attended, and only 8% graduated from high school.

Furthermore, in 1910, only 35% of 17 year olds were in high school.

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/08/12/ready-or-not-77-million-kids-and-adults-heading-back-to-school-soon/
Compare that to today, where nearly 100% of young people attend high school and OF COURSE it's going to cost more. DURR!

http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/education_spending
Meanwhile, even though spending has gone up by an absolute number, the percentage of GDP from the federal and state governments has remained steady at 2% or LESS, with rising costs from local spending, in part, because of an increased privatization of schools.

Oi vey, and they rallying against FLUORIDE??? Seriously?
http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovernment/dewitt-more-ferocious-fallacies-about-fluoride/2139759
"high rates of exposure were very high indeed — up to 11.5 parts per million. And many of the other highly exposed groups were drinking water with more than 3 parts per million of fluoride.

That's more than four times the concentration used to protect teeth: 0.7 parts per million.

And that, by the way, is the same or lower than the level in the water supply of some "low exposure" groups in the studies. In other words, the standard fluoridation level in this country was presented in some of these studies as an amount that allowed kids' IQs to flourish."

Stop fear mongering. Get some science.

Ron White - I Got Thrown Out of a Bar

It was better on the Blue Collar tour with other people to set things up for him. The way he's having a conversation with himself ("When I was 17 years old I was arrested for being drunk in public." "Seems to be a pattern." "If you knew Morse code, you'd already know that.") doesn't really work well.

Hey kids, need some help recognising legitimate rape?

hpqp says...

Since I started this, would you mind pointing out where in my post I refer specifically to "forceful rape"? Yes, statutory rape laws that ignore informed consent are a problem (note that they are practically unique to the US). But that is not the subject here, at all. What I (and those who agree with me) take issue with here is Kreegath's mocking of a legitimate criticism of sexism and interpreting it as "man hating and fear" (edit: a common sexist trope). Returning to your comment, it's all good and fine to "not bring gender into it", so long as one remembers that men and women are not equal before sexual abuse and its status in most societies.

>> ^draak13:

You know what else is fucked up, everyone in the world lashing at this comment immediately jumps to imagery of forceful rape. However, an 18 year old that has sex with a 17 year old is considered rape all the same. Or, a person who has sex with a mentally retarded adult is also considered statutory rape. In california, if two minors have sex with each other, they are considered to have raped each other. Further, the act itself is its own evidence of guilt, meaning that the accused individual(s) have no defense.
Before people blow off their cannon MRA junk, note that I never brought gender into this. Guys and girls are equally screwed by this law (in court AND in jail).

How do you know if you're suffering from man hating and fear? ♫
I'll tell you how to spot, man hating and fear ♪
You're not sure you've got, man hating and fear ♬
Well here's a little lesson for you,
Tell me if the following things are true:
I think all rapists are men - man hating and fear
I think all victims are women - man hating and fear
I rub out all grey areas to prove a moot point - man hating and fear
Men should have no rights to defense against allegations of rape - man hating and fear ♬

Oh, looks like we've got an MRA-hole in the house. Let me guess: you're a white male with malignant priviligitis, amirite? Did any one line of the song suggest falsely accusing someone of rape? Or calling all men rapists? Or hating men?? Oh wait, you ticked the sarcasm tag, that makes it all an a-okay bit of humour right? Wrong.
Your kind disgusts me. And by that I don't mean "men"; no, real men (and women, and anyone in between) know to respect another person's consent and their choice to retract it at any given moment. No, by "your kind" I mean the slimy, any-one-who-points-out-the-sexism-in-our-society-is-a-man-hating-feminazi-and-fear-mongerer kind.
I won't stoop to the MRA-low of wishing rape on you, because I would not wish it on anyone. Instead, I'll kindly suggest you go fuck yourself, because anyone in their right mind, male female or otherwise, would not consent to it with you if they knew your sexist stance. /angry rant
quality song btw

You know what's fucked up? Yesterday I learned that 31 states in the US can make the mother of a rape conceived child to allow visitation rights of the father/rapist, they can even get custody! WTF??

Christian Bakery Denies Service to Gay Couple

bamdrew says...

I'm pro-gay marriage, but this is just a guy refusing to accept money for a service due to personal beliefs/opinions. Gay marraige is non-traditional, and will remain 'atypical' in many people's eyes for a couple more decades. Personally, I can't be mad at people who think of themselves as traditional/conservative when they act in the way they self-define.

If a creepy 55 year old guy and a quiet little 17 year-old came into my hypothetical bakery, would I refuse to make a cake for their wedding? Maybe ... maybe thats my limit to what is socially acceptable... and I think it would be my prerogative to refuse serving them.

Twitter Rape Victim Punished

Hive13 says...

Listen, I am not trying to take anything away from this girl or the situation at all, but she was 17 years old, at a party, drinking to black-out drunk levels and got in a bad situation.

Why was she there at all? Where are her parents? They should be just as guilty as anyone.

Rape sucks. My wife was date raped before we met so I am not making light of it. I say this with all due respect for rape victims out there. People hear or read the word rape and picture Jodie Foster in The Accused every time. Legally, rape at the core level means "sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse, which is initiated by one or more persons against another person without that person's consent." -Wikipedia. Here's the issue. If she is black out drunk (which she was), she could have easily offered consent willingly and later not been able to recall consenting in the first place, therefore placing the boys in serious trouble. Them pleading guilty was probably their lawyer's work, pleading guilty ends the case and seals the charges in juvenile record as they were not tried as adults. Now, I am not saying that happened here, but it is possible.

They are assholes for taking advantage of the situation and especially for taking pictures and spreading them around school. I am glad they were found guilty and they absolutely deserve it. We'll never know what their punishment was and I am quite sure it wasn't enough for this girl or her family, nor would any remotely realistic punishment be enough, honestly. The judge tried them, they were found guilty and punished according to the judge's application of the law. Case closed.

Her tweeting their names and violating the court order was stupid, but I am glad they didn't seek to punish her further for it, she's clearly been through enough.

All that being said, these hack-job video "hosts" are just making it worse for everyone, especially this girl whom I sure would rather have it all behind her instead of cramming it down everyone's throat like this morons did.

they were freaking AWESOME!

I just found it enormously enjoyable action nonsense. And Liam Neeson is so fucking cool he just pulls it all off magnificently.

Things I love about Taken - SPOILERS;

The way his "17 year old" daughter runs to convince us she's 17.
He kills half the Albanian gang presence in Paris.
He gives his daughter a mobile phone without a charger.
Shooting the wife of his ex-colleague - I was just gobsmacked by that.
Neeson's running. He can't actually run so it's just as well people come at him.
Whatsherface as a megastar popstar which seems a slightly cruel bit of casting.
The fact that he NEVER reloads in the film - he just picks up new guns.

And of course that speech on the phone. It doesn't get better than that in my opinion.

So badly in fact, that his only recourse, his only way to survive, was to shoot him dead. What a wonderful world we live in. Modern medicine is truly amazing.
