Does it bother you that a high % of sifted videos are straight from Reddit?

I've been guilty of posting things I've found on reddit — only a couple of times and usually they're videos nestled in the bowels of the comments sections, though. I've long since quit, although I do recognize how tempting it might be to do so. I'm not bagging on anybody that does, I merely want to know if it bugs anybody browsing videosift that they've seen the videos already. To be honest, it does bug me.
enoch says...

it doesnt bother me and i will even vote for them.
but fishing reddit does smack of laziness.

everybody sifts for different reasons and/or intentions.
some sift videos for votes and star points,as if the sift were a game to be won.
other sifters post videos which reflect who they are.
we have sifters who just wish to share (me being one of them) something they find interesting.
some sifters post videos because they have something to say and use videos to say it.

aaaand some sifters fish reddit for the easy catch, but thats ok.

rottenseed says...

Because they don't "come" from reddit. Reddit essentially does the same thing videosift does. What I've gathered from this site (Videosift) is that it's supposed to bring in the best, most fresh, and even obscure videos from all corners of the internet using its members for crowd-sourcing. Going to another crowd-sourced content aggregate site is kind of just making this one a duplicate of the other. Which is fine I guess, but I wanted to know how people felt about that.

Essentially videosift is *dupeof=http://www.reddit.com/r/videos>> ^critical_d:

I am not sure I understand why it matters where the videos come from?

kulpims says...

yes, it does bother me a bit to see VS frontpage populated by the same shit as on reddit or other video aggregate sites. still, the way sift works that's unavoidable, isn't it? and you can't force people to sift only "original" stuff, so ... what can we do

Deano says...

Reddit will also feature dupes though. I've sifted a few videos this way and I just see it as a another source.

But I mainly just rely on my Youtube subscriptions and random browsing but I thank those that filter out the good stuff from Reddit.

Also Reddit does not do a good job of organising those videos and I'm sure with VS 5.0 we'll have even better ways of filtering and sorting video (right @lucky760?)

What Reddit is awesome for is the funny pics, stories and AMAs and the comments can be very funny. Which is not surprising given the traffic monster that Reddit has become.

I use reddit as well as probably 50 other sources to look for videos. I go through all these sites every day and spend hours looking for suitable videos. I look for things that I really like as well as what I think other people on this site will enjoy. I've noticed that most of the "good" videos that I've found on other sites tend to be posted on reddit shortly afterwards because they use the same sources to find their videos. If you'll notice, many videos are posted on our site long before they are even posted on reddit. I'm betting people on reddit look for OUR top videos and post them on THEIR site.

If I'm expected to not use sources such as reddit to find videos and rely solely on videos from youtube channels I subscribe to, then you would all be enjoying a lot of banal cat video submissions from me. Which would you prefer?

rottenseed says...

Yea that's another thing that I can't really call anybody else out because, unless it's material original to the poster of reddit, chances are they got it from another aggregate site. I just noticed I'm seeing a lot of the same videos in a day, that's all.>> ^pumkinandstorm:

Lots of things bug me, though. Lots of things. A tiny gnat was bugging (no pun intended) me a little while ago. Finally landed on the desk. I tried stabbing it with a knife. Desk is chipped. Gnat is still bugging me. Fucking gnat.

Is that chipped desk going to bug you now too?>> ^Fletch:

What this really points out - is that it might be cool if we had a way of recognising and awarding people who bring "fresh" never (or seldom) before seen videos to the Sift. We could use the view count on YouTube videos - but the update on that is really slow. Often videos that are on the front page of reddit have a 200 viewcount according to YouTube.

kymbos says...

Oh, but to add to that - I love it when people unearth a gem video that has sat on the web for years, with no love. And someone pulls it out and bam! There's footage of the Beatles from Germany in the 60s, or some nature doco clip from 1992.

In short, don't focus to heavily on 'new' to exclusion of buried gems.

You post videos without cats (or car accidents) ???

One thing that has always been true of videosift is that posters with more "street cred" than others can get their submissions sifted more often. I've used a number of sources like recent videos on break or liveleak to snag what I think (and often is) a top 15 video to get a bit of street cred now and then. It's really amazing how consistently that works. I've posted a fair amount of obscure videos from time to time, and invariably the weird stuff gets sifted if I've recently posted something more popular or widely accepted. I don't think there's anything different from sifting from redtits than snagging the latest "New Rules" from Bill Maher, or any of the Daily Show or Colbert vids, or most recent from College Humor, or grabbing Yahtzee's latest review.

I get what you mean about aggregators, but videosift is its own community - somewhat more focused.

alien_concept says...

I really don't care where people get their videos from, I've posted a few from reddit, and happily so, although I have always gone to the new section and just found something I like. But I have always prided myself on my collection of videos being predominantly found and sourced by me, so it'd be lovely to have that acknowledged somehow!

What actually pisses me off more than anything is when a sifter is so lazy they copy the title and the summary from another source too. Some sifters ONLY do this, which leads me to think, what the fuck is the point in being here if you can't put even a tiny part of your personality on a video?

I don't think that would work with the view count because with the hottest videos there are often several copies made and posted. One video might have a million views and an exact copy of it might have 3 views.

Combine that count with the video's age (on the host) and it might be a decent heuristic.>> ^dag:

PaS, PaS, PaS... I'm your friend. The w/e-way-the-wind-blows Pill-Popper, the Cliquies, and the Badgers running to your "defense" are not. They care not for you nearly as much as they care that you represent 10% of every future star point. You have been beguiled and bamboozled by those whose thin skins betray the indignance-laced Kool-aid they have been drinking for years. They are your Roman Catholic Church. I am your Martin Luther. They are your Tom Cruise. I am your Tory Christman. They are your SLA. I am your windowless black van. They are your enablers, co-dependents. I am your friend. They want your upvotes and the kind of affirmation and vindication they can only receive by collective membership into their twisted groupthink. I want nothing.

Another prolific poster here once left due to the shenanigans of a recently-returned and reformed (?) exile. VS didn't miss a beat. Other people filled in and the same stuff she would have sifted got sifted by others. That's why it was somewhat comical to me when she returned to posting and threatened to stop if the exile was allowed to return. Exile is back, thankfully, and she is still posting, predictably. If you measure your value here by votes and badges, it is a lie. You've been caught up. They are participation ribbons. Everyone gets something eventually, and they don't mean jack shit to those who just want to see the two-headed calf and Journey concert.

Whatever your story... and I mean whatever your story, I stand by what I said. You could be nose-up in an iron lung pecking out smiley faces with a chopstick in your teeth, and I would still maintain that there are infinitely more interesting, meaningful, and rewarding (in RL) pursuits to dedicate hours and hours every day of your life to.

I don't think it would have mattered who the comment was from or who it was to...I believe it would have led to the same reaction. I for one come here to have fun, and never like to see things get personal because I think it hurts the site and I guess the people who left the replies feel the same way. I really appreciate that they wanted to make sure I wouldn't feel bullied by anyone here. I hope we can put this whole discussion to rest now. I have videos to watch. P.S. I said hours which is actually only 2 or 3...I didn't say I spent all DAY watching videos. Sheesh. I could think of WORSE things to be taking an interest in.

Wow- this thread went downhill fast. That's what I get for making a comment about what a civil society we have here.

Let's posit a couple things -Fletch's comment was hurtful but maybe unintentionally so. Ad hom attack pile-ons don't help. it leaves the person on the defensive unable to express regret.

At the risk of vilification, I have to say that I had a similar reaction to that statement. If someone says the "spend hours looking for suitable videos", it's hard not to imagine them as some sort of needy shut-in. Having read her comments, I'm reasonably sure that @pumpkinandstorm is not like that, but the stereotype certainly formed in my head.

In short, even if I wouldn't have put it in those words, I can see where Fletch is coming from.

Also, I'm not commenting in a vacuum here. Oy... that'll probably go over your head as well. (Don't forget to breathe.)
