How is that whiny attention-whoring pos in any way a useful or a meaningful comment to leave on somebody's profile? Please, stop justifying her actions; it's a couple of times now she's confessed she's here purely for trolling ("stirring the pot"'s what she calls it) and trolls don't really need anyone standing up for them.

Also, the whole point here is to expose her hypocritical editing adventures, which, AGAIN, she herself has confessed to recently (by promising to not do it again and then immediately doing so); something you seem to have, quite astonishingly, overlooked.

Just because it doesn't seem useful or meaningful to you doesn't mean it wasn't between them at the time. Thepinky was offended by an extremely rude comment left by rougy, and you think her comment was rude and inflammatory? I'd say we obviously read a different comment, if it wasn't for the no necro-editing that's been in place for a while now. I fail to see your problem here, particularly given their following discourse and that she apparently thought he downvoted all her recent comments after that. [Something that even diamond charter members on this site aren't above.]

thepinky says...

EDD. It is natural for you to think that I am an attention-whore because you don't agree with me. When I make a comment that goes against the popular opinion here, I tend to get a lot of attention for it. This is not my fault. I don't express my opinions more vehemently than the rest of you. I'm not trying to be whiney. Don't you think that the rest of you sound whiney to me (about religion and conservatism, etc.)? I DO stir the pot, but this is not because I am trolling. This is because I disagree. In the past I have been very free with my opinions and prone to losing my temper. I have apologized and attempted to turn over a new leaf. Recently I feel like I have been doing much better because I took the negative feedback and tried to change. You might imagine how discouraging for me it is when people still insist that I am a troll.

My comment to rougy ON HIS PROFILE was, for one, none of your business. Secondly, some of the comments are private and some are not so you aren't getting the whole picture. Thirdly, I didn't say anything offensive. I didn't call him names. I expressed displeasure at an extremely rude and profanity-filled comment that he posted and he responded by calling me names and being generally nasty. I admit I got a little bit annoyed with that and lost my temper (still didn't call him names). Fourthly, rougy is a decent guy and we resolved the issue between ourselves. I apologized and he accepted. You seem to be assuming that I just go onto people's profiles and say rude things without provocation and for attention. This is simply not true.

As for the editing, I never thought it would cause such a fuss! It really is just a bad habit of mine. I'll tell you what I do. I write a comment and then I submit it. Then I have a bad habit of reading over it again and thinking, "Ooh, that was too rude," or "I could have said that better," or "I was too long-winded," and then I edit the comment. I should edit it before I submit. I'll try harder not to do it. Now, the posts that you are referring to on Prozac's profile are a different matter. All of the comments that you can see are unedited except for the one that I mentioned that I edited. (I edited this one RIGHT after I posted it because of that bad habit I have of editing after submission. There were no devious intentions behind that, and I did not change anything significant.) She deleted the other edited ones. I didn't think it would do any harm to edit the ones that she had already read and quoted because
1. She had already read and quoted them.
2. I didn't think that this would become a public matter.

As for the ones that Prozac deleted: I edited them because I said to myself that I would try to be nice to Prozac, so I deleted all of the unpleasant things I said (which did not include calling her a cunt and a twat) and replaced them with nice things. It only gave me a little bit of pleasure to think of her annoyance at seeing the comments edited. The comment on her blog, again, I edited DIRECTLY after submitting because I thought better of it. There was so little time involved that I didn't realize that she had already read it. Bad habit. Bad, bad habit. I'm sort of embarrassed about it now. I didn't know it would make everyone so angry!

thepinky says...

EDD, you provided links where, I assume, we are supposed to find me name-calling, etc., but maybe I'm missing where I ever did that?

alien_concept, in the past you have been really cool to me and were very forgiving of past mistakes when I decided to be less confrontational, which is why it gives me pain to say that you are dead wrong if you think that Prozac is a saint and that I alone have been winding this situation up. After Deedub posted his http://politics.videosift.com/talk/Wonder-how-UsesProzac-feels-about-comments-by-thepinky thread and the whole situation seemed to be cooling off, Prozac called me a cunt on my profile not once, not twice, but three times without response from me. I admit I was boiling up a little bit inside, but I tried to ignore it. This more recent incident began when I noticed Prozac antagonizing someone else and being extremely nasty on their profile. I will keep the name of the person under wraps for fear that he will be dragged into this matter and called my sidekick. It wasn't my business, I should have ignored it, but it annoyed me, so I said something to her. WOW. I'm telling you truthfully that my original comment was very calm and I didn't say anything offensive at all. She responded with a hailstorm. She was understandably annoyed. I should have left her alone. But talk about personal attacks! She is the QUEEN.

All you need to do is read this blog to see that I am not the one winding this situation up. Two posts about me in a row? She seems to be thinking, "My insults are just not enough, let me expose my lies and exaggerations about her to the world and all of my friends can back me up!" The above post is one that she posted on my profile...I think it was 3 times? And I deleted it because it is as nasty as anything. Go ahead and read the comments on LittleRed's profile. Isn't it obvious who is antagonizing who? And it is not only LittleRed that she picks on.

You might also notice on Deedub's thread that I attempted to make peace with Prozac, only to have her make fun of it and make me feel like an idiot for trying.

I'm not asking you to take my side. I'm sure Prozac has plenty of wonderful qualities that I have never had the privilege to see. But the person I know loves to crush her enemies, take their weaknesses, blow them out of proportion, shove them in their faces, and announce them to the world. I'm not a fan.

We BOTH could have behaved much more like adults. Prozac is not the Big Bad Wolf and I am not the victim. I haven't behaved well, either. I wish it had never happened and I hope that we can all put it behind us.

thepinky says...

Yes, I asked you to mind your own business and then admitted to not minding mine. That's lame. I'm lame. So sorry. I would edit, but someone might have an aneurysm.

I did, I did. Put my past grievances aside and thought you were really ballsy. And I still do. But the common demoninator is seemingly obvious here right? And of course I don't think UP is a saint. But I have conversed with her somewhat, and she's a good girl.

^AC
That's because you agree with her. I'm sure she's nice to her friends and that does her credit! I've read some of her comments that I thought were good and funny. I've even upvoted a few of them. But the real test is how she treats those she doesn't like. (Admittedly, I fail that test all of the time.) You are perfectly welcome to think that she is a good girl. I will probably go on disliking her until I have developed Christ-like charity, so don't try to convince me.

Of course I'm a common denominator in confrontations on the Sift! I'm an overly-opinionated/religious/conservative/idealistic/slightly feminist/short-tempered/overly passionate/often immature 21-year-old! But I'm NOT a troll.

thepinky: what you're saying you're trying to do is good. the iniative itself, not the results I've seen so far. I do think you'll 'come around' eventually, at least to some extent, and start seeing things from points of view other than those of your community/mindset/values (other members' experiences have illustrated the Sift has this sort of influence).

yet I still feel you're trolling because I don't buy that the strong vibe of conscious attempts to illicit negative response and controversy I've picked up from some of your comments is really just me. you've rarely supported your claims, you've shown you can be angered by people expressing opinions that differ from your own, opted for name-calling ('liberals' is the worst offender on my list; there's no such thing, so would you please, PLEASE refrain from using that?), and sometimes you comment on gut feeling (and I think it's understandable that a lot of us Sifters have a beef with religious people who <W>go with their gut</W>). all of this mirrors an entire artificial mindset that is ignorant and hypocritical and in direct conflict with most sifters' views (and imo, the worst thing to hit America in the 20th century).

speaking of religion, sifters' attitudes won't change anytime soon, I can tell you that. meanwhile, it'd be a LOT more worthwile if you didn't preach about "creation" and "afterlife" (and any of that other stuff humankind has no clue about whatsoever) - instead why don't you sift some videos that paint religion in a positive light? I'll upvote any that come my way.

Oh, and I didn't call you an attention-whore. That's because I'm sure everybody is one, more or less - but yeah, you're definitely in the "more" camp So am I.

and rasch, I'll be waiting for that phonecall.

thepinky says...

I'm long-winded when I defend myself. Sorry.

^You just as good as said that I'll stop being a troll as soon as I "come around" and share your opinions. You think that I need to start seeing things from other points of view, and then I will no longer be a troll? Being religious and conservative does not automatically make me less open-minded than you, and it doesn't make me a troll. I have learned many, many things from being a member and I hope I will continue to do so.

Are you saying that I go with my gut on issues unrelated to religion...because I am religious and that's what we do? What?

I promise that those are not conscious attempts to illicit negative response. I promise that my responses to videos and comments are sincere. I get annoyed when I see a video that I find offensive (I'm sorry you don't share my view!) being enthusiastically upvoted. I get frustrated when you are all patting each other's backs and congratulating yourselves for opinions that I consider to be incorrect. Honestly, put yourself in my shoes for a second. I love the Sift and I love the people. But sometimes...it just plain sucks for the minority.

I've shown that I can be angered by people expressing opinions that are not my own? How do you feel when you read my comments? Angered? That does not mean that I am trying to make you mad. Usually it is not simply differing opinions but attacks that get my blood up, such as when there is a thread about religion and "stupid" and "ignorant" are the words of the day.

So, when you say I'm a name-caller, you are referring to my saying "liberals"? I didn't realize that this was trolling or that it offended anyone. My sincerest apologies.

I have never, ever "preached" about creation or afterlife. This misunderstanding is something that some sifters tend to do. If you're religious, suddenly you are lumped into a group and the opinions of people you've never agreed with are suddenly your own. It is an interesting phenomenon.

And why does my time and why do my comments have to be "worthwhile?" Do I have to defend eveything I say? Do I have to be trying to convince or convert anyone? Can't I just make one comment and then move on without being accused of not supporting my claims? You do it all of the time. I think I can, too.

Seeing an issue from someone else's point of view does not imply adopting their conclusions and opinions as your own. It only implies "walking a mile in a another man's shoes" -- stepping outside of one's own perspective to adopt another's, however briefly and imperfectly. Obviously, this is always incomplete and filtered through one's own experience. But the ability to empathize with others, in the most general sense, is arguably the most important of all social skills. It's what allows (semi-)coherent social interactions in the first place.
(Shameless brain channel plug - search for mirror neurons to learn about the cellular basis for this ability.)

Being religious and conservative does not automatically make me less open-minded than you, and it doesn't make me a troll.

While neither of those qualities makes you a troll, I think it is fair to say that religious people are generally less open minded than non-believers. (Perhaps that should be restricted to agnostics - I suppose many strong atheists are just as close minded as those on the opposite side of the spectrum.) Absolute belief (or disbelief) in the existence of God entails certain cognitive consequences. For instance, religious people often have a hard time comprehending how an atheist could be a moral being, because for a believer, all morality stems from God. So, without Him, how can morality exist? Thus, anyone that rejects His existence also rejects morality. Every atheist and agnostic reading this will instantly recognize the absurdity of such a proposition, but for nearly every religious person I've every known, it's an accepted matter of fact. Essentially, absolute belief in anything causes the believer to be cognitively incapable of adopting certain points of view, because the original belief makes some points of view incomprehensible.

I have no doubt that you are a good and well-intentioned person, pinky. You are at that age of possibly greatest optimism and idealism. It's a wonderful place. Enjoy it. But don't allow it's comfort to prevent you from growing. It's kind of like the apple in the garden - knowledge is a double-edged sword. You'll lose some of that optimism, but you gain an understanding of your fellow humans. Unlike the original sin, though, it is generally worth it to go ahead and take a bite.

EDD says...

^You just as good as said that I'll stop being a troll as soon as I "come around" and share your opinions. You think that I need to start seeing things from other points of view, and then I will no longer be a troll?
No, I didn't say that. It's how you react to other people's opinions that's bothering me.

Are you saying that I go with my gut on issues unrelated to religion...because I am religious and that's what we do? What?
Seriously, don't tell me you haven't heard of George Bush making decisions on his GUT feeling? I was referring to nothing else there.

I get annoyed when I see a video that I find offensive (I'm sorry you don't share my view!) being enthusiastically upvoted. I get frustrated when you are all patting each other's backs and congratulating yourselves for opinions that I consider to be incorrect.

Honestly, I don't remember ever being angered by anything anyone has written on the internet. That doesn't mean I don't understand one could get angry, but I also think your anger treshold is set rather low.

I have never, ever "preached" about creation or afterlife. This misunderstanding is something that some sifters tend to do. If you're religious, suddenly you are lumped into a group and the opinions of people you've never agreed with are suddenly your own. It is an interesting phenomenon.
Yes it is and I'm sure refuting a superstition as illogical by proof of other superstitions has been studied. But it's not unlike a member of a religion thinking that every other religion but his is the right one. Atheists just take it one religion further

campionidelmondo says...

Stay tuned for the next episode of Days of our Sift. Will anyone ever find out that ThePinky and UsesProzac are the same person? Will EDD ever get to ride the big ... well, you know what?

All jokes aside, I think people on here shouldn't be discouraged to voice their opinion. Ok so thepinky didn't always express herself in the best possible manner, but who on here ever does? I feel she is getting alot of negative attention, because she is going against the popular opinion, which is mostly liberal. I for one welcome different views on issues such as abortion or religion, because it gives us the possibility of intelligent conversation. I don't want everybody to agree with one another, that would be really boring.

All this "controversy" will only make people like ThePinky feel cornered and unwelcome and I don't think that's fair. No offense UsesProzac, but if you feel the need to sort out your differences with ThePinky, I'd suggest talking to her instead of posting a blog entry for everyone to see. Behavior like this will only result in people with different opinions either leaving this site or turning into complete trolls, neither of which is good for this community.

UsesProzac says...

I did speak to her, extensively. She kept manipulating the conversation and passively downvoting through my comments posted. Deedub81 tried to drag my name through the mud by request of thepinky. That was on a more public forum than this, SiftTalk.

Are you shitting me? Ganging up on you on your profile? Everything I've ever said to UsesProzac has been said in the last month - the first three or four pages of her comments. Not a once have I "ganged up on" anyone. The first set of comments was referring to my interpretation of "nerdgasm" vs orgasm, and the second set started when she apparently took offense to my comment on a "How to get your girlfriend to consent to anal sex" video - a grand total of maybe five comments.

Just because she doesn't like me doesn't mean she didn't start shit, or that I "ganged up on" her. Oh? What's that? Learn to read?

thepinky says...

Ignoring your comments is WAY more difficult than I thought it would be. I've never tried it before but now I know that it sucks. I'm a dork. I'm unignoring you now. Not that you care, I'm just sayin'.

Prozac, I'm sorry you felt attacked. I am starting to feel bad about this whole situation. I always thought you were a heartless wench. But now that I know that you think you are the victim of this situation, I am truly sorry. I really think you misunderstood me. I never meant to start a fight. I never meant to manipulate our conversations to make you look bad. Honestly, I really did not have that intention. Indeed, I think that by deleting your comments I made you look better because now no one can read all of the nasty things you said to me. You have been very mean and insulting to me, and I feel you have even harrassed me when I was trying to move on and let it go. Remember that this whole thing started because you downvoted almost every single one of my recent comments in a single day. And remember that even after THAT situation blew over, you called me a cunt multiple times on my profile. But I know what it is like to feel ganged-up on. Believe me. I, too, do things that I wouldn't normally do when I feel cornered and outnumbered and picked-on. Deedub's post probably wasn't pleasant for you. But also believe me when I say that LittleRed and I never ganged up on you. And I didn't even know about the downvotes before Deedub posted his thread. We each have our individual problems with you, and you have to admit that you haven't exactly been nice to any of us.

I intervened in a situation where I felt that you were unfairly harrassing another sifter. I think that you did exactly what I might have done. That is, you lost your temper. We both escalated the situation, and here we are.
