Rex Murphy | Free speech on campus

cloudballoon says...

I don't mind Rex's appearance, and I can say I usually agree -- and intrigued when I don't -- with his views, but what irk me most about watching his shows lately (that is, about the past 4~5 years) is his creeping smug delivery. It isn't showing in this particular segment though. But man... when he does it, I always goes "Is this at all necessary?"

Back to the topic at hand. Progressives really needs to get its act together. Juvenile crap like these zerg rushes are not serving anyone or any worthy causes. Just more ammunition for the Right to dismiss your argument.

You think Peterson's a wacko? Then let him talk all he wants to let others form their opinion that he's a wacko. I'd rather listen to him and try to figure out what the hell made him act/talk that way then give him the opportunity to say he's a PC "victim."

An American Ex-Drone Pilot Speaks Up

This is why you use children to fly your drones and tell them it's just a video game. All those awesome memories of killing terrans, protoss and zerg -- and I didn't even know I was mass murderer.

Gou Miyagi Skateboard

poolcleaner says...

If you like Gou Miyagi's style, check out Kilian Martin!

Pogos, random darksiding, multiple board use, hand stands, etc. Good to see this in the Top 15 but I would kill to see Kilian AND Miyagi there together.

And if you want more skateboard originality check out:

* Omar Salazar
* Willy Santos
* Sergio Yuppie
* Rodney Mullen (Of course!)
* And bonus half pipe creativity from Daewon Song & Chris Haslam

Also, JFYI, we may look weak but don't f with us (we're like zerg): http://videosift.com/video/Guy-with-Gun-Confronts-Skateboarder-Street-Justice-Ensues

The Greatest Zerg Strategy Ever!

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

albrite30 says...

When Wings of Liberty came out, I was sincerely excited for the reignition of a series that had given me so much joy with the first game. I held off of buying it on the first day to make sure that I wasn't getting a polished turd. As someone that rarely gets to play something more than once all the way through these days, I have to make sure that I am getting my money's worth. I watched many of my friends purchase SC2 and play through it within a disapointing amount of time. I can assure you that they did not "speed run" through it. That is all I am saying. I will wait for the trifecta, the triumvirate of all three elements. Marines, Zerg, and Protoss. The game will be so much better when I can get through the complete story line without having to wait 2 years for the next chapter.

12 hours? Only if you blast through every mission on very easy, skip the entire story, and try to speed run your way through the campaign. Even then I doubt you'll make it on your first time.

If you actually play the game like a normal person, it'll easily take you 20 - 30 hours. Not to mention the high replay value due to mutually exclusive choices you have to make during the campaign, such as permanent unit upgrades, mercs you hire, and mutually exclusive missions.

So yeah, as a guy who rarely finishes games, and almost never replays, the WoL singleplayer alone got me a good ~60 hours of gameplay (once on hard, once on brutal), which is more than I can say about any single player game I've bought in the last decade other than Civ 4 and XCOM (and maybe Fallout NV).

And that's not counting the multiplayer.

Swarm Robots Cooperate with AR Drone

Jinx says...

Nah, its clearly Seige Tanks and Science Vessel

Ok, so they use different frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum to select different robots. I was doing that when I was 12 years old. My brother and
I both had remote control cars. If we wanted to use them at the same time we had to use different frequency crystals. Planes are equipped with a transponder which broadcasts an identification and sometimes altitude so ground radar can tag them more effectively. Couldn't you basically do the same thing with these robots, or just use the same process as in this video only instead of using the visible spectrum just use a lower frequency wave and all its advantages.

Or, you could actually use the advantages of high frequency and "point" at the robots you wanted to select rather than broadcasting to all of them and selecting through a process of elimination (which could take a while if you wanted to select multiple robots out of a large group).

So yah, I agree with everybody else. Unless they have some very specific design contraints this doesn't seem like a very elegant solution (although it does utilise the hardware they already have - cameras and lights).>> ^Payback:

Seige Tanks and a Banshee? Better hope you're playing against a total noob Zerg.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - Battle Report (PvZ)

Jinx says...

As an old school protoss it makes me very sad that they are removing the iconic carrier and replacing it with such a functionally similar unit.

As a Zerg player it does make me happy to see Hydras actually being useful

Holy Cannons and ***Spoiler***, Batman!

Jinx says...

Oh god, I hope that Protoss was just messin and tryin to win wit just cannons or wow is he bad.

And I normally don't much like the commentary on these vids, but they won me over when they started talking about the old Protoss voices.

Starcraft 2 Siege Tank Exploit!

Psychologic says...

>> ^Asmo:

Anyone think the setup time vs a decent player would make this pointless?

The way he did it yes, especially since air units can still attack the tank.

If someone perfected doing this quickly then what might work is getting 2-3 tanks down there and then attacking the front of the enemy base with the remaining forces. Since they'll be defending pressure at the front it will be a lot harder for them to figure out what is attacking their mineral line or buildings.

Another possibility would be an early drop attack, especially against zerg. Use the glitched tanks to support a marine drop. The tanks can hit enemy units, but can't be attacked by melee units like speedlings or even roaches due to the short range. Then just kill off tech structures with the marines.

What might be more useful is stacking some tanks inside a few missile turrets on a high-ground corner for expansion defense. It would keep air units from sniping them and would keep the tanks from damaging each other. It would also hide the number of tanks you have from your enemy (much like the older "viking flower").

2011 Blizzcon Starcraft II Grand Final

Jinx says...

Yah, it was pretty awful tbh. I upvoted mostly cos I like seeing e-sports on the sift, but honestly there have been better games.

Particularly frustrating to watch since I play Zerg. I've got into similar situations against Terran and often it really feels impossible to win lategame against an entrenched Tanks, Vikings, Thors, Ghosts etc. Partly its an issue of Terran having such a more efficient army in terms of both mineral/gas and supply but mostly I think it comes down to mules. Terran had 45 SCVs in the later stages of that game compared to Zergs 50ish, and that was after a nuke wiped out some 20-25 supply worth of drones. The fact Mules are supply free and can supersaturate the last remaining mining bases gives Terran such an advantage later on. Nestea could have handled it better, saccing drones for Spines/Hatcheries so he could remacro faster after he lost his army, but still its a really tough situation to deal with as Zerg imo, particularly on that map where the map is so often split down the middle with relatively safe expansions for both players and pretty tight choke point (well, for lategame) in the middle. I always endeavour to end Terran before they can get a 4th on that map because if I don't I know I'll likely lose later.

To win as Zerg there you really need to get on their production buildings and then begin to eat away at their army as best you can. Its suicide to directly engage their army and I've never had much success going for their economy unless I can complete deny the last remaining base, but generally I think its best to really deny them anything to spend their minerals/gas on.

Its funny, because for so long I whined about Terrans and Protoss never playing a macro game, always doing 1 base cheese as I struggled to get to midgame...now I wish they'd stop playing for the long game and go back to their allins . Talk about being careful what you wish for.

(Oh, last thing, to be fair I think Nestea could have won that last battle had EMP not hit all his Infestors. A couple of Fungals on those ghosts and they would have been revealed and died quite quickly to the Broods. On top of everything else in this game I think perhaps that EMP was really the killing blow)
