Mr Perfect Movie Trailer 1

Tim Minchin's Storm - The Movie

spoco2 says...

>> ^criticalthud:

interestingly, tim appears to suffer from the same inability to shut his yap as storm. arrogance cuts both ways.

It's nothing to do with Storm saying too much, it's the insanely annoying disregarding of science and empirical reasoning that people like her do with flippant remarks and a complete misunderstanding of how things work.

It's the turning your back on science and reasoning so that you end up vaccinating your children with homoeopathic remedies instead of... oh I dunno, things that work.

It's the bullshit fear that I've seen instilled in parents towards believing their child will become autistic thanks to vaccinations when there is ZERO EVIDENCE to suggest so, purely an evil fucking 'doctor' who made a shitload of money by convincing people of his falsified claims.

It's the believing that you can turn your back on science and pray and you'll get better rather than dying.

It's the pretending that all the advancements that you currently live with that are thanks to science don't really exist and that you'd be better off 'getting back to nature'... except for those things you really would rather not do without... like your laptop or phone or perhaps just some panadol because, you know, you get headaches every now and again.

And it's the arrogance and bullshit that they try to discredit science with that makes people like Minchin boil, not that they 'talk'.

Look, the problem is not that there is a different opinion out there, the problem is that FOX is not, as it were just a different opinion, its a network of dishonesty. Its lying and distorting facts, it denies and undercuts reality itself, All while claiming to be the "fair and balanced" alternative.

This kind of opinion can only be aimed at the FOX commentary side of the equation such as Beck, Hannity, et al. It does not apply to the "news" side. Most cable news programs have a distinct division between "News" (updates of current events) and "Commentary" (talking head opinion programs). I have seen nothing in FOX News' "news" that in any way is described by your litany of grievances. The only stuff that fits your description is the "commentary" side.

But talking about OPINION programs as "dishonesty, distortion, denial, undercutting reality", belies the nature of what you are implying. You are implying their NEWS lies, distorts, denies - when in reality you are grumping at COMMENTARY that (based on your bias) you interpret as lies, distorts, and denies. Must you not freely acknowledge that MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, NYT, AP, USA Today, and innumerable other news outlets are equal violators in that regard? How is the foaming commentary of Chris Matthews any better than Sean Hannity? How are the inane distortions and exaggerations of Beck any different than Maddow's?

FOX didn't start the birther movement. That started because Obama first refused to release his birth certificate, and then Hawaii refused to release it, and then they released a digitized copy, and finally released a document that does not necessarily rule out the possibility of being foreign born. FOX News didn't do all that. And the whole East Anglia corruption scandal is not FOX News' fault. Again, I only see this as you complaining that an critical voice is applying some strict standards of accountability to an organization that your personal bias prefers being given a free pass to lie. It isn't dishonesty - it is a rare application of journalistic standars to an otherwise unaccountable group caught red-handed cooking their books.

Try finding comparable examples on Olberman or Maddow, you wont. Because while they are opinionated, biased and crtical, they also care about the facts

Bullcrap. Madddow & Olbermann prove they are only interested in left-leaning slant every time they open their mouths and flap their yaps. Someone with a right-leaning slant will say the exact thing about Beck or Hannity and you cannot argue the point because they are using your same logic. They can say that Beck 'cares about facts' too - as long as they reinforce his position. Maddow cares about facts - if they make her opinions look good. Neither of them tell the whole story, and both of them deliberately hide facts that contradict their narratives.

Glenn Beck, 6/10/10: "Shoot Them In The Head"

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

It's a two way street Netrunner. I made my position very clear. Most political speech in the US - including Beck's - is non-violent and in no way relates to blood libel. I made no bones about my position in that regard.

My initial post made no comment about whether Beck used violent or non-violent speech. It was just a full-context description of the Beck quote. I referred back to that initial post because that's what I thought you were talking about. I was mistaken in my understanding of what you were referring too. No need to go all drama-queen about it.

But on to the subtance rather than the pointless. You said, "You're saying Glenn beck talking about needing to shoot people in the head before they shoot us in the head is non-violent, while blood libel, which is just a made-up story about Jews using the blood of Christian children in religious rituals, is violent."

Your whole position seems to be that Beck's whole "you're going to have to shoot me in the head" schtick is the equivalent of Nazi blood libel... You've asked several times 'what's the difference'? I explained the difference. I'm not sure why you are so reluctant to accept the explanation. The only possible reason is that you reject the idea that what Beck said is 'not violent', but that you actually in fact and all reality believe that there is no difference.

I've said it afore in the Daily Show thread, and I'll say it again. I do not consider political bombast to be violent, nor is is a 'call' for violence, and it does not inspire or 'gin up' violence either. When politicians 'target' demographics, it is not violent speech. When the NRA says, "You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hands" it is not violent speech. When Glen Beck says, "You're going to have to shoot me in the head to get me to stop talking about the founders" it is not violent speech. When Robert Gibbs says, "We're going to put our boots on their necks" it is not violent speech.

No right-minded person who hears these things construes them as actual calls for real-world violence. These are political phrases, passionate rhetoric, 'metaphors' (as you once said), or stupid exaggerations. Bachman does not actually expect people to go around armed and dangerous. Obama does not really expect people to bring guns. Beck does not expect people to get shot in the head (himself or others).

What did you mean by "non-violent opinion"? Were you talking about Glenn Beck there? After all, that was what I had asked you about.

I didn't have Beck in mind specifically, but he is certainly included under the same rubrik. No one believes Beck was either calling for himself to be shot in the head, or for others to be actually shot in the head. Would I have used the phrase if I had a TV show? Highly unlikely. However, I defend the right of dummies to run off the mouth. It helps you see who they are. So when right wing bombasts like Beck flap their yaps, I applaud it. Much like when I applaud it when left wing bombasts like Maddow or Maher vomit out the true landscape of their minds.

An Irishman abroad tells it like it is

I'm not a nationalist at all, and I'm ever more inclined to consider patriotism and nationalism a damn mental disorder than anything else. Feeling all proud and somehow better than others because you fell out of your mother's vagina in a particular geographic location is completely stupid.

I'm all for unification of mankind, not the other way around. Unfortunately, very few people seem to think like that. Hell, I wouldn't mind if Spain and Portugal united as one country called Iberia. We have europe's oldest borders. That says a lot about your relationship with the neighbours.

Can Portugal and Spain's situation really be compared to Ireland and Greece's? I mean, yes we are also in a bit of trouble, but I truly believe the whole situation has been amplified by fucking speculators, messing with our credit ratings.

It certainly is amplified by speculations, for which the blame primarily rests with Merkel, if you ask me.
At current interest and growth rates, Portugal's national debt is noticably less threatening than Ireland's, but considering the agenda of cuts and savings, growth will remain abysmal or even turn negative, as is the case of Greece. Add the account deficit of 11.6% of GDP in the first half of 2010 and I'd say Portugal is quietly insolvent.
Spain on the other hand with its national debt of mere ~57% of GDP looks somewhat more stable, but look at the foreign exposure of the private sector. That's up to a cool €700B once the lid is taken off. And that would stretch the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) budget to the limit, a budget of only €750B. Which is why some argued that it should have been closer to €2T from the start.
And that's when a haircut is inevitable. Folks around Europe won't just accept massive cutbacks, causing massive unemployment and the following nightmares, just so investors can cash in on their situation. There's going to be some serious debt restructuring, including haircuts.
The real shit would begin if Italy, due to national debt and political instability, got sucked down as well. That'd be fun, yap.
So I'd say let's take Jean-Claude Juncker's advice and finally make it a proper union, not just a shared currency with opposing interests. Unfortunatly, my own bloody government won't play along with that.

Health Care, TARP, Stimulus: They Worked!

We know vaccines work because we checked to see if they work via scientific method. The results were and are very clear, so the medical community can say with certainty that they work and are not snake oil.
I challenge you to find this clarity, or even a consensus, similar to what vaccination enjoys with the medical profession, within the community of economic experts.

Let's turn this double standard right on around. I challenge you to find the level of clarity, or even a consensus, similar to what vaccination enjoys with the medical profession, within the community of economic experts, that says to believe these programs were effective is akin to believing that human sacrifice is effective.

>> ^Lowen:
They are not the same.
and, FYI my comment was a sarcastic remark, not a serious comparison.

Right, and when I responded to your hyperbole with my own, you dismissed it. You didn't present an argument, you just flapped your yap with completely unjustified smug certainty.

I'm certainly up to hashing through an in-depth debate of whether any of these programs did what they were supposed to, if you put forth an actual argument. But I'm going to treat a snide, off the cuff remark like a snide, off the cuff remark.
