rare purple Siphonophorae

Xaielao says...

That is crazy cool. Very 'alien' looking. Animals have been evolving in the oceans for so much longer on the land, we get wild things like this. It's wonderful.

19-year-old hopes to revolutionize nuclear power

shang says...

he's copycatting the "Radioactive Boyscout" who built a reactor in his backyard in 1995
http://harpers.org/archive/1998/11/the-radioactive-boy-scout/

it leaked radiation and he was picked up and his back yard was dug up, garage and all, and put into barrells and taken to nuclear waste area. The EPA were all in "space suits" in his yard, and he had tricked the nuclear regulatory agency and several places into providing him with info by faking his age and making fake letterheads.

the wild thing is the boy scout actually made a breeder reactor, but it was leaking a lot of radiation the EPA was registering radioactive material all over the yard and into neighbor yards.

DAMN, you got played - Ice Hockey Penalty Shot

MilkmanDan says...

Perhaps, but this particular "bad goalie" played a few games for the Caps a few years back, and has a .936 save percentage and 1.75 GAA in the KHL this year (presumably playing against a fair number of pretty high-caliber NHL refugees), hence his playing in the all-star game there.

I doubt anyone would try that sort of move in an actual, competitive game situation, but then again I've seen some pretty wild things in the new NHL shootouts.

Ticklish Meerkat

Retroboy says...

>> ^Payback:

Wild things do one of two things when faced with "unpleasantness"
1- They run away from it.
2- They strike down upon it with great vengeance and furious anger.
Ones that stick around and make giggly noises? They like what's happening.

3) They get eaten by it.

On the upside, that option generally only happens once.

Maurice Sendak Dies at 83

Maurice Sendak Dies at 83

UsesProzac says...

Terry Gross: "Can you share some of your favorite comments from readers that you've gotten over the years?"

Maurice Sendak: "Oh, there's so many. Can I give you just one that I really like? It was from a little boy. He sent me a charming card with a little drawing. I loved it. I answer all my children's litter--sometimes very hastily--but this one I lingered over. I sent him a postcard and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, "Dear Jim, I loved your card." Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, "Jim loved your card so much he ate it." That to me was one of the highest compliments I've ever received. He didn't care that it was an original drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

Low Point of Tim Burton's Career - The Futterwacken

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

^Yep, Charile and the Chocolate Factory was shit in exactly the same way. Lot's of camera mugging and cgi eye candy- but absolutely no heart. No story, no characters you care about. Style over substance and cinematic drivel.

But I haven't been happy with most kids' movies lately. I know this is a minority opinion- but I thought Where the Wild Things Are was shit too- with a better soundtrack.

Screaming Salvia Girl

kagenin says...

>> ^rottenseed:
Have you ever done salvia? As a, once avid, consumer of drugs I'd have to say that Salvia is one of the strongest highs I have ever experienced. Like it rips your consciousness away from your ego with ease. You don't get any adjustment time...you're just separated from what you thought you knew about the universe. She doesn't do anything wrong. She just got fucked up. That's what happens to everybody that takes it (assuming its 10X or stronger). It's one of those drugs you don't want to do often and every time one of my friends or myself have done that drug, it has put us in a place beyond our control, no matter our experience level. It is the great equalizer.>> ^westy:
Morons
, looks like she probably has not done it much before.
its people like this that get drugs band , the same people that go out and get uterly waisted on drink, the only difrence is that the government or big companies will never make a huge amount of money out of salvea so it will get band off the bat.
she will end up blaming the drug rather than the fact she didn't bother researching what it dose ,, how much to take and what to expect.

I cannot agree more with what the seedy one said.

It gave me my most wild, vivid psychedelic experience I've ever had (thankfully, it was the most short-lived in realtime, although my conception of time was dramatically altered - those 5 minutes felt like an eternity). It's also given me the weakest (just a lightheaded feeling). It can be inconsistent, even 10x potency. Diviner's Sage can show you some pretty wild things... but only if it wants to.

I'm not going to watch or upvote, because honestly, video cameras should be consciously left out of the psychedelic experience. How they thought this would be a good idea is beyond me. I hope that this haunts them for the rest of their lives in job interviews.

Best movies of 2009 (Cinema Talk Post)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

I'm late to this best of party, and I haven't seen 'In the Loop', 'Moon' and a few others that people have included in their lists, but here goes....

Best (in no particular order):

-Inglorious Basterds
-Where the Wild Things Are
-Watchmen
-Yeardly
-District 9
-Up in the Air
-Mr. Fantastic Fox
-The Hangover
-Capitalism (Not Moore's best, but any film that attempts to make honest discussion of capitalism less taboo in American culture earns my respect. Despite a meandering structure and the inclusion of youtube videos on the big screen, there is plenty to like here.)

Worst (It's pretty easy to avoid bad movies these days, but I managed to see a few)

-Antichrist - I usually like movies by Lars, but he seems to have purposely made this ode to genital mutilation to be unlikable/unwatchable, which must make its inclusion in my list a badge of honor. Well done, you sick pretentious fuck.
-Paranormal Activity - At 90 minutes, this over-hyped D grade student film was 70 minutes too long, with across the board failings in direction, acting and writing categories..... but still infinitely better than....
-2012 - One of the worst films I've ever seen. Mind bogglingly dumb, boring and entirely too long. Even the elaborate, expensive CGI/action sequences were lifeless, dull and uninspired. Zero entertainment value. When you can't make the destruction of the Earth even vaguely entertaining, you should probably stop making movies.
