Best Game Show Random Word Ever

Ornthoron says...

"I wish someone could tell me the odds of that happening."

I'm going to assume that the lady picks letters from two piles containing exactly one of each vowel/consonant respectively. The probability for picking a particular letter then gets larger after each draw, since there are fewer letters to choose from. Knowing that there are 21 consonants and 5 vowels in the English language, we now only have to multiply the probabilities for each draw:

P(CUNTFLAPS) = 1/21 x 1/5 x 1/20 x 1/19 x 1/18 x 1/17 x 1/4 x 1/16 x 1/15 = 1/11,721,024,000

If, on the other hand, there is an unlimited supply of each letter, such that it is possible to draw the same letter several times, the calculation gets simpler, and the probability gets lower:

P(CUNTFLAPS) = (1/21)^7 x (1/5)^2 = 1/45,027,213,525

Note that I have not considered the additional randomization added by the contestants picking either a consonant or a vowel. This is difficult to include, since it is not entirely random, but influenced by the tactical considerations of the contestants. These two different probabilities thus only apply to any sequence of 2 vowels and 7 consonants.

One should however not read too much into these numbers. This is just the probability for that particular word, which it is entirely too easy for us humans to ascribe meaning to in hindsight. There could be many other possible letter combinations that would give us pause in a similar way. And the probability for one out of these words appearing is of course higher, even though we would think it a striking coincidence for each of those words as well.

Obviously there is some planned distribution of consonants to vowels, but if any letter could randomly fill any spot, it would be 1 in 9^26, or 1:6,461,087,889,226,673,298,932,241

Brits please note that this phrase is exponentially more offensive in America

Thanks for the heads-up & complimenting my English - I remember there being a discussion about "sailor" being the proper term in this context on the sift couple of months ago, so I really should've not made the mistake.

And the expression you're looking for goes somewhat like this: "pimpis ir garshiix" ('i' is always pronounced as in "pimp", and double-'i' is an elongated vowel).

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
For this video I believe the word you're looking for is "sailor" instead of "soldier." In English the word for all service men and women in the Navy of any nation is "sailor." The same applies to anyone who works on a civilian boat or ship too. Since your Latvian you might not have known this. Your English is still better than most non-native speakers, BTW. It's certainly better than my Latvian. I don't even know how to say "cock taste good." (Umm, blankfist was wondering.)

mr ant: whilst accurate and succint, i believe your title-writing skillz have failed you at this juncture and possibly robbed this most excellent sift of muchos respect from the masses.

may i suggest something along the lines of, 'holy fuck, i want to make love to this frozen moment tracking shot robbery clip' as a revised title? could be too long, maybe take out the vowels.

by the way, this is the best thing i've watched for at least a day.

I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow and realize the joke I missed, but for now - WTF is a hard 'A'? I thought vowels were either long or short, consonants hard or soft.

Farhad is one I've always wondered about - I settled on fuh-rod', but I'm sure it's probably something I can't even pronounce (presumably that's an anglicized version?).

Oh, and in any case anyone was wondering, I have it on good authority that SiftBot's name is pronounced dik'-hed.
