"What More Do We Want This Man To Do For Us"

I am aware. Did you notice I responded to some of your points in it like accusing me of not watching the right wing hitjob video?

The rest I didn't bother responding to. But after second thought, I'll respond to the question of whether Obama is extreme to the left or not. And this is a really easy one...

Name a single thing Obama has done that's honestly extreme to the left. An actual policy. I'm not talking a moderate-left policy. Raising taxes on the top income earners from 35-38% wouldn't be an extreme left idea. It's moving the dial a notch or two to the left. If he proposed raising it to 50%, that would be a hard left move.

See, I don't really care if *some* of Obama's appointments are far to the left. I care about policies proposed or enacted.

Yet another thing I get irritated about - characterizing someone you don't like as a political caricature to the extreme side of that political direction. Don't like George W. Bush? Paint him as a Nazi because he's more to the right than you. Don't like Obama? Paint him as a godless communist because he's to the left of you. Of course the extremes in the parties complain their own guys aren't conservative/liberal enough. This way, nobody is happy, and everyone complains about how crappy our gov't is!

For the record, I AM NOT thin-skinned about Obama. I get pissed off when people criticize Romney for firing people when he worked at Bain, when that was his FREAKING JOB! If he didn't do that, and Bain was unsuccessful, then the left would have attacked him for being a crappy businessman like George W. Bush was with a baseball team. You can't have it both ways.
Or that his dog was tied to the top of the roof on a family vacation...
Or he, along with friends, picked on someone they thought was gay decades ago in prep school, ignoring the fact everybody did stupid things in high school. It has no bearing on them decades later.
It's totally ridiculous, unproductive, divisive, and doesn't do anybody any good whatsoever. But most importantly, it detracts from honest debate about issues that actually matter.
I don't have any problems with people criticizing Obama for real issues. Him being impolite?! I watched your idiotic right-wing bent hit job video. That's impolite for a leader?! They slammed Obama for making comments where he respectfully disagreed with the Supreme Court. What should he have said instead? Did he scream at them? You know, like the dude who screamed "YOU LIED!"? NO! Him being impolite wasn't the issue. Conservatives are really just upset that he voiced his disagreement with their view, and it's spun to accuse him of being rude and disrespectful. It's ridiculous. He took Eric Cantor to task in a political discussion. Did he scream at him? Cuss at him? NO!
Here's the difference:
If you want to criticize Obama for perhaps overstepping his bounds and the ideal of separation of powers when he criticized the Supreme Court decision? Fine, I disagree, but that's an honest debate. I wouldn't be chewing you out for that.
I watched the video. I didn't see a single instance of him being overly impolite as a leader. If that's the case, every single damn president we ever had is an asshole. And where was your outrage then?!
I'm tired of this shit from both sides. I get pissed off at partisan hackery and absurd distortions of the truth. You, sir, are doing that with this drivel about Obama. I don't care if you dislike him as a President. I'm not a big fan, either. But if you're gonna trope this idiotic crap out, expect to get reamed for it by reasonable people.
>> ^shinyblurry:

Yeah, I'm gonna vote Romney because he has promised not to put his feet on the coffee table. WTF? This is your criteria for a good President? Until he walks with people, he's a bad President? Get off it.>> ^shinyblurry:

Why is everyone so thin skinned about Obama? That's my question. I was being somewhat facetious, although I think the video, while humorous, shows a definite pattern of behavior. In any case, I'm not voting for Romney. Although I share some of his views on social issues, that isn't enough to get me past our theological differences, which are great. My prediction is that Romney will actually be far worse for this country, spiritually, than Obama. That is the reason I won't vote for anyone who doesn't worship God in spirit and in truth.

Graphic video of teen being shocked played in court

rottenseed says...

I'm glad you did this. You can say what you'd like about you trying to "rehabilitate" a person, but when you use tactics this extreme, is it backed by overwhelming scientific data to be successful with minimal side-effect? I'm not going to research it, but I'm pretty sure this is an archaic superstitious psychiatric ritual akin to lobotomies and phrenology.>> ^vaire2ube:

We warn you, this footage may severely increase our ratings and invoke empathy and anger. Fox News out.
hmmm context..
"JRC educates and treats the most difficult behaviorally involved students in the country and administers the GED to treat severe behavior disorders only after other treatments have failed and a court order is obtained to do so at the request of the student’s parents and doctor.
The treatment plan must also be approved by a Human Rights Committee, a Peer Review Committee and a physician.
These students predominantly exhibit behaviors that are dangerous to themselves and others and have been resistant to previous treatments. Students parents or guardians, along with their school districts and medical personnel are involved in developing care plans and in most cases, before coming to JRC have tried several residential programs and psychiatric facilities and found them unsuccessful. Often students are chemically restrained with medications and their guardians either remove them from those programs or the students are asked to leave.

On the issue of the video tape, the sole reason a recording exists is because JRC maintains cameras in every room where a student may receive treatment. It is the only such facility to do so. This is for the protection of the students in our care and is precisely to enable us to review every application of the GED."

It's not exactly an easy situation by any stretch... does the shock therapy ever actually work?

Time to Trim the Interface? (Sift Talk Post)

jonny says...

Good point about google analytics. You can't interpret any of that data as representative of popularity or usefulness of different features, but it could certainly help point out where users are focusing their attention in the interface itself (are the submenus more or less used? what's the most common path to submitting a video?).

Minimalism can be, but isn't necessarily, a design goal. The Principle of Least Surprise should absolutely be one. There shouldn't be submenus that look and behave differently. The variety of decorations and information surrounding a video on the single video page is unnecessarily complex. Much of the information is of a similar nature (meta data about the video), but is presented about a half dozen different ways, sometimes redundantly. Another goal should be to group similar or related activities together, which they are to some extent now, but could be better consolidated. (Why are the different community activities - SiftTalk, Lounge, Blogs, etc. - all separated?)

I'm trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to avoid specific suggestions to one area of functionality because this is the kind of change that needs to be comprehensive, not achieved with a lot of tweaks to the existing interface. The latter method is how it got where it is now, slowly accumulating elements and features for over two and half years since the last major overhaul of the interface. Given everything that's been added or changed since then, it's probably time to consider another overhaul.

Thanks for that. It doesn't mention something they said in the episode about him having something like a 1000 living creatures in his ACTUAL HOUSE!

The Most Challenged Books Of 2011

rebuilder says...

>> ^schlub:

What kind of video is this? How about some explanation as to why some of the books are banned instead of just flashing their covers at the viewer.. am I supposed to write down all of the titles and find out on my own why and where they are banned?

They're not banned. The list (for 2010, actually): http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/frequentlychallenged/21stcenturychallenged/2010/index.cfm
is of books most often challenged. From the site: "A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. "

So basically these are books some people complained about and wanted taken off the library shelves. Also from ala.org: "...most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection."

TYT - 77% say Rich and Corporations have too much power

heropsycho says...

That's not the problem. The problem is that people want their cake and eat it, too.

What percentage of Americans would say the US government should take money away from successful people and give it to unsuccessful people? I bet you'd get a low percentage.

The problem is we have conflicting ideals and goals. We want equality, but we also want smart, hardworking people to be rewarded for what they do. When that results in economic stratification, then people complain about that. We want economic freedom, but we also want things that do not coincide with economic freedom, like environmental protection, everyone getting the same fair shot as kids in every possible way so that no one has an advantage of becoming rich, a Wall Street sector that is regulated to prevent shenanigans, etc.

People in this country want easy to understand solutions even if they won't work or would make things worse, or solutions that tend to be painless, even when they don't exist. We don't want cuts to social programs, AND we want lower taxes! How did that work out for us?

And I'm sorry, but often, the general public is pretty stupid. 51% of Americans believe Wall Street does more harm than good for the economy?! If that's an accurate representation of Americans, holy crap do Americans lack a fundamental understanding of our economy. Wall Street needs significant reforms, and they deserve a steeping pile of blame for why the economy crashed, but that's a ridiculous irrational belief born out of anger at what happened. It's understandable emotionally why they would think that, but it's also pretty stupid.
