The rest I didn't bother responding to. But after second thought, I'll respond to the question of whether Obama is extreme to the left or not. And this is a really easy one...

Name a single thing Obama has done that's honestly extreme to the left. An actual policy. I'm not talking a moderate-left policy. Raising taxes on the top income earners from 35-38% wouldn't be an extreme left idea. It's moving the dial a notch or two to the left. If he proposed raising it to 50%, that would be a hard left move.

See, I don't really care if *some* of Obama's appointments are far to the left. I care about policies proposed or enacted.

Yet another thing I get irritated about - characterizing someone you don't like as a political caricature to the extreme side of that political direction. Don't like George W. Bush? Paint him as a Nazi because he's more to the right than you. Don't like Obama? Paint him as a godless communist because he's to the left of you. Of course the extremes in the parties complain their own guys aren't conservative/liberal enough. This way, nobody is happy, and everyone complains about how crappy our gov't is!

In any case, I'm not voting for Romney. Although I share some of his views on social issues, that isn't enough to get me past our theological differences, which are great. My prediction is that Romney will actually be far worse for this country, spiritually, than Obama. That is the reason I won't vote for anyone who doesn't worship God in spirit and in truth.

Good point about google analytics. You can't interpret any of that data as representative of popularity or usefulness of different features, but it could certainly help point out where users are focusing their attention in the interface itself (are the submenus more or less used? what's the most common path to submitting a video?).

Minimalism can be, but isn't necessarily, a design goal. The Principle of Least Surprise should absolutely be one. There shouldn't be submenus that look and behave differently. The variety of decorations and information surrounding a video on the single video page is unnecessarily complex. Much of the information is of a similar nature (meta data about the video), but is presented about a half dozen different ways, sometimes redundantly. Another goal should be to group similar or related activities together, which they are to some extent now, but could be better consolidated. (Why are the different community activities - SiftTalk, Lounge, Blogs, etc. - all separated?)

I'm trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to avoid specific suggestions to one area of functionality because this is the kind of change that needs to be comprehensive, not achieved with a lot of tweaks to the existing interface. The latter method is how it got where it is now, slowly accumulating elements and features for over two and half years since the last major overhaul of the interface. Given everything that's been added or changed since then, it's probably time to consider another overhaul.

is of books most often challenged. From the site: "A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. "

So basically these are books some people complained about and wanted taken off the library shelves. Also from ala.org: "...most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection."

That's not the problem. The problem is that people want their cake and eat it, too.

What percentage of Americans would say the US government should take money away from successful people and give it to unsuccessful people? I bet you'd get a low percentage.

The problem is we have conflicting ideals and goals. We want equality, but we also want smart, hardworking people to be rewarded for what they do. When that results in economic stratification, then people complain about that. We want economic freedom, but we also want things that do not coincide with economic freedom, like environmental protection, everyone getting the same fair shot as kids in every possible way so that no one has an advantage of becoming rich, a Wall Street sector that is regulated to prevent shenanigans, etc.

People in this country want easy to understand solutions even if they won't work or would make things worse, or solutions that tend to be painless, even when they don't exist. We don't want cuts to social programs, AND we want lower taxes! How did that work out for us?

And I'm sorry, but often, the general public is pretty stupid. 51% of Americans believe Wall Street does more harm than good for the economy?! If that's an accurate representation of Americans, holy crap do Americans lack a fundamental understanding of our economy. Wall Street needs significant reforms, and they deserve a steeping pile of blame for why the economy crashed, but that's a ridiculous irrational belief born out of anger at what happened. It's understandable emotionally why they would think that, but it's also pretty stupid.
