Baby Chicks dumped alive into a grinder (and other horrors)

bcglorf says...

The Grinder- Being killed in less than a second is fairly humane. I hope to go that quickly.
The Cracks- The chicks falling off the equipment are not systemic cruelty but poor handling. It could even be argued that Vegan Camera Person is being more cruel by just videotaping its suffering rather than killing it. I wonder if they turned off the camera and walked away, tutt-tutting while it writhed on the floor.

You nailed exactly what I was thinking. The chicks being dropped in the grinder are getting a quick and humane death, which is the best that can be done for anything you kill for food. If you want to see something inhumane try raising a more than a dozen chickens in even a partially enclosed space. Inevitably one of the chickens will be weaker than the others, and will be gradually pecked to death by all the others. That's the reason for 'cruel' de-beaking of the chicks as they are moved on. All in all animal's raised for food usually die in a more humane fashion than their wild and free counterparts which is should count for a lot.

ABSOLUTE lovely comment. in fact thats exactly what the camera man did, because vegans are fucking pussy's I can say that because I was one as I explained in the thread. that fucking wiener took the camera seen the scalded chick, said OH MUH GAWD, did a little tear then went on to look for other photogenic situations. A civil human would of smashed its head, would of thwacked it against the metal conveyor belt, whatever. the thing was just alive and suffering and any normally operating and thinking human would of done the humane thing. call me a hypocrite but vegans with there pointless save the world everything has feelings shit just isnt right. maby in 500 years. thats if humans last that long.

well, good talkin to myself. i'll have a drink for ya.

Baptist pastor prays for Obama to die and go to hell

RadHazG says...

Dear lord smooman, don't give them any *more* bright ideas! The right already accuses everyone who follows Obama as thinking he's some sort of messiah, now they have a name for it!

On the video - it's a known fact prayer does diddly squat. Anyone who does make the claim has obviously never paid much attention to the things that prayer does nothing for. Most people only bother to pray for things they know can happen, or at least has a chance of happening. They say "Prayer is the most powerful tool we have! Prayer can help anything!" and yet they shake their heads and tut tut at so called Christian Scientists who use prayer and only prayer to heal sickness.

Or for an even more fitting example - http://www.whydoesgodhateamputees.com/. Prayer is powerful eh? God can do anything right? Bring back an arm where everyone can see it, and maybe we can start a discussion.

8-Bit Trip - Lego Stop-Motion Awesomeness

mentality says...

>> ^demon_ix:
Wow. The point flew right past you, didn't it?

No, it shows what you can do with legos, stop motion techniques and 1500 hours of time. I like stop motion, from feature films like Coraline to shorts like Madame Tutli-Putli. They require insane patience, dedication and skill to pull off, and create the kinds of surreal gorgeous visuals that CG simply cannot match.

This video demonstrates that the creators do indeed have the skill and dedication to pull off great stop motion art. However, the simple geometry and texture of lego blocks is something easily replicated by CG. The creators did not take advantage of the uniqueness of stop-motion video, except in the beginning where the lego interacts with the humans. So in the end this is merely an impressive (but unnecessary) exercise in stop motion techniques.

So, yes, I do consider this to be a colossal waste of time because they could have better showcased and taken advantage of the uniqueness of stop-motion animation, instead of creating a series of effects that can be easily duplicated for a fraction of the time and effort spent. To put things into perspective, 1500 hrs is about 4 years at 1 hours a day, or ~3 months (waking hours). With that time, they could have learned an instrument, wrote a book, took a semester of college, worked out and become very fit, done some humanitarian work in Africa, etc. But hey, at least they managed to impress some people like you and reach #1 on videosift. Well done.

I agree that stuff like Fitna falls somewhere in that grey area in that it could cause people to commit violent acts, but it does not itself call for violence upon Muslims.

I think this is a pretty important point to make, and I agree with most of what you're saying, jonny.

With Sheik Yusuf the situation is very clear. In this situation it's a little more murky. It's these grey areas we need to watch out for. How do we judge? Where do we draw the line?

I'm not sure I agree with the decision to turn the guy away. I would have preferred him to come and go, mostly ignored. Now he's got the press he wants. My beef is how the situation has been reacted to, as evidenced in the comments here.

The media loves this kind of thing, and so do a lot of people. It gives them something to tut over at the breakfast table, something to talk loudly about at the pub with their mates.

But it in no way helps the situation.

Farhad is exactly right, it's politics at work here, pure politics.

Re: Victoria

Lucky, do you or your Life Companion have any interest in plants, gardening, or really neat fireworks displays? First two would be the Butchart Gardens, last would be the Butchart Gardens on Saturday nights in the summer.

Just walking around the town is pretty cool, especially at night. Nice thing is we have a really low crime rate as there is no land link to the mainland, so you need to arrive by boat or plane. Our ferries are more like cruiseships ( albeit cheap ones with no staterooms ) You might want to hop over for the day while you're in "Van".

I would really need to know more about your interests to come up with other recommendations.

Oh, we even have an IMAX. oooo, scary stuff, kiddies!

The Royal BC Museum has a display set up of the last 150 years of history in BC which I hear is quite interesting. It should be a good show as King Tut's loot was the Big Thing a couple years ago. It's kind of a mix of the different museum types, one part of it that's alway impressed me are the lifesize diorama displays of the various epocs and areas of BC.
