Dan Savage: Why Monogamy Is Ridiculous

Lawdeedaw says...

>> ^Enzoblue:

He never mentions jealousy really. That feeling I get when I think of a girl I love with another guy. I get murderously angry - I mean it's the first time i ever thought i could seriously murder someone. Am I to repress that and shrug it off Mr Savage?

Um, the thoughts of murdering someone you love? I would say, yes, suppress those...

But really--is it love or is it more a butchered version of ownership? I think I knew what true love was when a girl I cared for deeply went to another man--and I only wanted her to be happy. Before that, I only knew something slightly less than love.

anyone know how to make a youtube playlist with high quality set to "on"?
and this film is NSFW for ugly displays of male nudity

So, what happens when the world doesn't end?

Mikus_Aurelius says...

Opposition to the slaughter of animals is an emotional reaction. Either you feel it or you don't. It may be that working in a slaughterhouse for a day would shock people into feeling differently about it. However I don't think we can embrace that as an omnivore hypocrisy test for two reasons.

1) If they stayed at the job for 6 months, they might get over their shock and resume their earlier belief that killing animals for food is perfectly acceptable. There was a time when 95% of the western population had killed an animal for meat, and there was no mass conversion to veganism.

2) More fundamentally, all humans are emotional beings. In a jarring situation, we can all be manipulated into feeling some way that we didn't feel 10 minutes earlier. Go watch some tough guys crying at the end of a romantic comedy. Do they believe Reese Witherspoon has found true love? No, but Hollywood has figured out that if you play swelling violin music, people get emotional, no matter how contrived the story is. I don't think we can consider the reactions to such shocks, particularly as a result of deliberate manipulation, as a true insight into a person's character. Instead, we should see how they feel when they've had time to step back and reflect on the experience.

The video author might decry this as "rationalizing" our emotional failings. However, emotions are beyond our control. It's impossible to feel the wrong way, because there is no choice in the matter. You feel how you feel. It's a good thing that humans have mechanisms to construct their identities apart from their emotional reactions. Otherwise we'd be even more enslaved to them and more easily manipulated than we are now. Is examining and selectively discarding our spur of the moment emotional reactions cognitive dissonance? If so, we should be putting cognitive dissonance in the water supply, like fluoride.
>> ^grinter:

consider what the reaction of Sift omnivores would be if they were forced to slaughter their own meat. Even those claiming they feel no moral imperative to respect the suffering of other animals might wince just a bit as that calf calls for it's mother in its last moments of consciousness.

The very best Guiness World Record

Jinx says...

In his head he probably thought it would be a good way to reduce the number of question marks over his sexuality, but the rest of us know that he must have spent a lot of time practising and refining that technique not on his many sexual conquests, but more likely a mannequin in his mums basement. He's probably the kind of person who studies religiously for the possibility of intimacy in the same sort of way you might prepare yourself for nuclear war or the zombie apocalypse.

On the flipside, maybe I wouldn't be so lonely if my one true love hadn't ditched me because I failed to under those fucking hooks that one time. Goddamn, it like they were padlocked. WHAT WOULD THOMAS VOGEL DO?

For me, it made sense: She was blind, so she would only have a vague idea of what the outside world had turned into, anyone with sight would have had more questions still - what's that big metal thing with wheels that moves, what's this smooth surface with white lines on it? It was still fraught with danger from her perspective, and it kept the village confined and intact. Yes they sent a frailer person to get supplies, but that was the risk and sacrifice to keep the village contained.
Made sense to me like i say, but i'm sure you could tear it apart with overanalysis. But i think you could do that with most stuff.

I'm saying, why didn't one of the adults, who knew the truth of the outside world sneak out one night and get the medical supplies? But like I said, that wouldn't have made a very good movie that way. A lot of movies are like that if you stop and think about it after watching them.

Ah, my explanation wasn't thorough enough.

How i figured it, was that they were committed to this idea, most of them wouldn't want to go and the only one who MIGHT want to go is the father of the girl, who was the ultimate leader of the town and i imagine couldn't realistically leave the town for a while and come back and not have everyone be just a little bit suspicious - she might go for her true love, more foolish things have been done in the name of love, but if he demonstrates that even he's too scared to go, then that cements the apparent danger to the knowlessmen.

And let's face it, she wasn't really in much danger, she was a very capable person even being blind, the path through the forest wasn't very difficult (they may not have known about the road, i suppose getting hit by a car could have been a concern), the only difficulty appeared because the mental handicapped guy escaped and chased her.
