The horror movie music and THUMP sound effects make me think I'm watching a documentary on the 9/11 hijackers. Very manipulative. Also what's with the interviewer constantly talking while he's interviewing the dentist, that struck me as pretty amateurish. That was about as far as I got.

i think the greater point i was trying to illustrate, and failed miserably at it would seem, is that religion, any religion and politics dont mix. plain and simple. now being a man of faith, of religious persuasion myself, it certainly influences my political spectrum. but when i or anyone use that religion to justify a bill or a political policy, that is morally irresponsible particularly in a free and diverse country such as ours.

but if you want to use your holy book, the same holy book i revere, to thump all of us morally inept heathens on the head and tell us, especially woman, what to do with their bodies with their uterus, or try to place some sort of higher value on a fetus life over that of anyone else (ya, even murderers, drug dealers, whatever) then you are the one that is on a slippery moral slope

I cringed when I heard the three thumps, that fourth, well the first guy who could of gotten hit, he got off REAL lucky, damn that was close. I hope the other three only have fractures bone or two.

It's a distinction that offers room for interpretation. Some addicts identify with their addictions, and therefore, by definition the "addict" is powerless over their lives inasmuch as their lives have become unmanageable by the addict. The individual may regain power over their lives inasmuch as s/he identifies with being in recovery (inclusive of surrendering to a higher power). As with anything of this sort (in which "belief" in one form or another plays a role), there are levels and degrees of "big book" thumping that will determine that person's success in the program. The trick is not to assume (as you admit to have done) about an individual something that you haven't personally undergone.

That sounds like you were commenting about the 12 steps to me. Well, if you were and forgot that you were, step 1 says alcoholics are unable to manage their life and step 2 says only a higher power can restore them. So, AA does presume alcoholics powerless over their own life if they're powerless over their addiction, it would seem to me.

One of my co-workers, Danielle was taking the N back to Brooklyn one night. As she was pulling out of the station, she heard a soft "thump" on the window right next to her head. She turned to find a guy "banging the biggest cack I ever seen" against the window. But she didn't feel threatened because the guy was outside of the train.

I swear to god, you've never heard funny until you hear a yenta from Brooklyn tell that story.

This stuff is part and parcel to riding the train though. I've had to shield women from guys who were trying to grope them before. It's pretty amazing how apathetic people can be but once you've ridden the NYC subway system long enough, things just stop surprising you. It's great to hear about this stuff though. I was on a train one time when a guy started asking the girl next to me if she would come home and suck his dick. I heard him say it but when she called him out, he started saying she was crazy and full of shit, etc. He even said she was desperate. So we(me and my wife and another male passenger) took her to the other end of the car. When the guy followed, we physically forced him out onto the platform. We must've gone twenty stops but sure enough, when the girl got out, the guy was peaking his head out from the end car and started following her again. So we called the cops and followed him until they picked him up. I can't believe the balls of that guy. I really wonder what would've happened had no one gotten involved.

The situation was never as simple as D=Confederates and R=Union. Plenty of blacks voted for FDR. The tipping point I guess was when dems supported, passed, and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and people like Strom Thurmond who filibustered it switched to the republican party. After 1964 all the wealthy white male bigots flocked to the Republican party, and their platform reflected that.

Nearly all the states that didn't ratify the Equal Rights Amendment are now Republican strongholds, because sexism is implicit part of the platform of the Republican party (and it mostly comes from bible-thumping).
