Swiss hockey coach tells it like it is

cloudballoon says...

As a Canadian, I'm not going to gloat, eh? Rather, I admire the coach for speaking the truth and he need not be embarrassed by this cold, hard fact: ALL NHL teams bribe European players to play in the league. It's just "money talks" that American & Canadian teams dominate at the very top tiers of international matches.

Just like the reverse is true for FIFA.

What is QAnon? If You Don’t Know, Now You Know

newtboy says...

Interesting ramblings having nothing to do with my post about Q and news coverage, and mostly dead wrong.

Let me fix those....
Lost a boatload of jobs leaving us with highest unemployment rates since the great depression and the largest number of businesses closing.

Lowering taxes but raising spending, giving us the highest debt and largest deficit ever.
Include emergency spending and this year added well over $7 TRILLION to the debt. Each man woman and child owed $88000 before this year's insane over budget spending in the neighborhood of $7 Trillion that's been reported (which means it could be trillions more in hidden spending). He is running America like a business, and he likes to strip businesses of all cash and assets, putting them in his own pockets, bankrupt them, then walking away leaving his partners ruined. America is nearing bankruptcy, is in massively more debt despite his promise to not only end deficit but end the debt term one. Instead he tried to double it and pocketed hundreds upon hundreds of millions in illegal business he directed the government to do with Trump companies, something no president has ever attempted but Trump's term has been non stop hatch act violations from day one, so he illegally stole hundreds of millions from hard working Americans, again.
Largest GDP drop ever in history, meaning the worst economy ever, not the best.
The deficit this year will be the largest since WW2, more than double the huge Obama 09 deficit that stopped the Republican recession of 08, 18% of GDP.
https://www.thebalance.com/us-deficit-by-year-3306306
The debt is 136% of gdp...up 32% under Trump in just 3 years, the Deficit is up 15%. The country reaches a tipping point if the ratio is more than 77%...it's 136%. 77% is when lenders begin to worry whether it's safe to buy the country's bonds. They think the government may not be able to pay back its debt. Under Trump they're fairly certain we won't even try.

Put another way, if Trump paid for his 2020 spending instead of raising the debt exponentially, every man, woman, and child would have a tax bill for $20000 just this year alone, with zero reduction in debt.

Caving in to China after praising them for their Covid response, he's not fighting back over anything. He can't even get a trade deal done after tossing out one we had, this has cost hundreds of Billions in pure wasted money for his ego. China is expanding as we contract in ability, economic strength, and even territory.
He's pro Russia, he's destroyed American manufacturing, education, mail, infrastructure, international standing, trade, and debt. He talks pro American, he doesn't lead or govern that way. He's pro Trump, and has no other loyalties.

The military didn't need a whit of rebuilding, it was quite well funded before, and he inherited the best prepared, best funded, best armed (with the most ammunition despite his lies), largest (measured by equipment, not soldiers), and most inclusive military. He's screwed them repeatedly, by repeated last minute redeployment, cutting benefits, ignoring Russia's bounties on American soldiers and the deaths those payments caused, tossing out decorated soldiers while pardoning and reinstating murderous anti American sadists (stripping them of honor), and now he's screwed up their medical system by screwing up the USPS, delaying their medicine, and killing some veterans in the process, way more than Benghazzi.

Yeah, you are bat shit crazy, ignoring facts constantly to praise Trump over his destruction of our national status on every front.
Just nuts, Bob. You must pretend 2020 didn't happen to believe even one of those lies.

You mean like MLK, Ghandi, or Mandela did?

Perhaps an extremely well armed fanatical populace with little to lose paired with impossible terrain and nearly zero resources to steal has that chance against some less advanced enemies....but again, I'm talking about Americans.
Americans have zero chance to win or draw against the U.S. military. None. Nada. Zilch. A temporary standoff with disastrous consequences is the best I've ever heard of, that's a loss.

bcglorf said:

As @jimnms alluded to re Afghanistan, civilians may not be able to 'win', but well armed civilians can certainly make it hard, bordering on meaningless for their opponent to win either.

No, automatic weapons don't guarantee liberty from tyranny. On the flip side, try opposing a tyrannical government without them.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Student Debt

Lawdeedaw says...

You ask where to start? It is obvious that was not rhetorical in any way shape or form because your argument was poorly put together from the beginning.

"The total bill due in AMERICA tops 1 trillion." Then, "That's right, student debt in AMERICA..." There is even a reference to an AMERICAN President, and everything else about this video was about America. We see a reoccurring theme here newt?

So follows the logic that since this discourse is focused solely on American schools, then we are all talking about American schools. No other assumption is logical. My comment, with that prefacing in mind, is obviously intended for American schools. Yeah, take it out of context and I look like an idiot, but with the context I am not the one that looks stupid.

Let me give you another example. Say we are talking about gay rights in America and I just generalize the concept of gay rights after an intense discussion about just that. You could argue that since gay rights in tribal, African countries are different then I am stupid, but don’t be such a stickler for pathetic red herrings.

Second, the problems facing the poor are tragic. It is WELL DOCUMENTED; however, that poor children have lower grades. Why? Because it's hard to think on an empty stomach. In other words, it's hard to care about what the fuck is on the chalkboard when you have to worry about where you are going to get food at or hell, if you will have a roof over your head. This fact is not insulting, as you clearly say it is, this is reality. A sad, tragic reality that few in America have the balls to have a real discourse on. We trivialize it behind a false veneer. We make it seem like the poor try so hard and care so much but that if only we helped them a little more they could succeed. No, we have to help them a LOT more.

I think all colleges should be paid for by the government. I think books and research materials should be free. I think we can do a lot more than what we currently do.

Lastly, one student in my current class is obviously lacking in education and more so obvious does not care. She is a mother of three children, one of which is disabled. I can see why she just wants the degree and I don't judge her. You, on the other hand, do unintentionally judge this woman, newt. You insult her by suggesting her lack of educational pursuance is rare to the poor and that she must be failing that pursuit because of a lack of drive. She cannot care about bettering her leisurely time newt, period.

Do you think I gave a fuck about learning, just for education’s sake when my brothers beat me, threw me down the stairs, choked me, humiliated me, and shoved a pillow over my face at night? Or when they punched my skull into concrete and beat my dog? You insult the hell out of me—as though I SHOULD have cared when I just tried to survive. As though I failed to care and that made me a failure. The poor should not care—they should survive. We should all help them care.

Where to start, Lawdeedaw?
First, your comment was not limited to American colleges, so your admonition to @bareboards2 is a misstep.
Second, I must guess from the grammar and your estimations that you were visiting these colleges, not enrolled, because my experience was far different. I was a struggling full time, minimum wager earner while I went to college on my own dime for YEARS, because I wanted to learn things, not for a 'degree' to get a good paying career. I knew many others there that may have hoped to better their earning potential, but also wanted to better themselves, and so took many elective classes that didn't further an academic career, as did I. I also knew some of those at Stanford, but fewer.
EDIT:The poor not caring about education is not only wrong, it's extremely insulting. Because attaining good education is more difficult does not make it less important to them, in fact it's likely MORE important, and many sacrifice to a degree inconceivable to the 'rich' to educate themselves and their children.
And not all Americans are overt consumerists ruled by their base emotions and without any self control. Many are, but not all by a long shot.

The girl says (after 2:25) "We have to face critisizms about our government.....I think it's so unfair because I'm an individual, how can you judge me by my government?"

And then they talk about American's beliefs in general terms. Wow. They're so enlightened and we need more of this kind of talk.

One thing about gwiz665's vid that is never answered is the negative impacts on jobs that technology has. I am not in any way shape or form knocking progression--but the computer has allowed CEO's to make billions while cutting losses (I.e., hard workers.) Machines have allowed farming to be cheaper, in fact most farmers must use machines or perish...
I don't know a solution, but education alone isn't enough to counter this problem.

That's more or less the entire concern the left has about the future. If we reach the point where we really don't need 60% of the population as laborers anymore, how will our society respond to the shift?

More wealth for our workers (in the form of more paid time off, or a shorter work week for the same pay), or lots of people who become permanently unemployed and get treated like parasites by the rest of society?

I'm pretty sure we're not so advanced that we will never need the 10% of our population who've involuntarily left the workforce back, but seeing how things are going right now doesn't make me optimistic that we'll actually be celebrating when the day comes when our society's demand for labor starts to actually decrease...

I'm always suspicious of nice even numbers that sound like they came from a protest sign rather than from an exhaustive study (50% of America's PHDs are foreign born).
But I don't dispute the overall point.

A few statistics from wikipedia:
-55% of Ph.D. students in engineering in the United States are foreign born (2004).[4]
-Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of Ph.D. scientists and engineers employed in the United States who were born abroad has increased from 24% to 37%.[4]
-45% of Ph.D. physicists working in the United States are foreign born (2004).[4]
-80% of total post-doctoral chemical and materials engineering in the United States are foreign-born (1988).[5]

etc. etc.
Not all the statistics are that bad, though.

Well, one focuses narrowly on American education, the other on multiple things. In all honesty I care far more about education in America than business.
I think the condensed format significantly alters the focus this vid.

And, @gwiz665 upvoted it, so he should be the one to decide. Your verdict, oh honorable gwiz665?

Why is it you have to watch fucking RUSSIAN TV to get straight news these days???

I'd be careful about calling RT "straight news", it's just got a different agenda than domestic news orgs. It reminds me a lot of Al-jazeera English -- it gives a lot of attention to any story that indicates America isn't the utopia it sells itself as around the world.

As far as factual accuracy, they're interviewing a guy from alternet.org -- maybe they're more accurate than the mainstream press, maybe they're not, but it's not like RT has done original reporting here. They've just given a platform to a fringe-y group in the US to say that the US electoral process is deeply corrupt.

I agree on a gut level with the alternet guy in this case, but I think RT giving this guy a platform doesn't mean they're "straight news." If anything, I think they're just in the business of giving a megaphone to anyone who can make a persuasive case that America sucks, or at a minimum that all that talk from Americans about freedom, democracy, rights, equality, and prosperity is just a load of propaganda.
