Baby Survives Plane Crash in Dad's Arms

jimnms says...

Power lines are very hard to see from the air. Fuck they're not easy to see from the ground either when you're going 70mph. Next time your driving down the highway keep an eye out for them and see just how close you are to them when you're able to notice them. Now imagine being in the air, landing with no power to go around and have one come into view that close.

It might look fine from up there, but with your engine out and only one chance at putting the plane down safely do you want to take a chance and go for the road then find a power line in your face or a car(s) that you didn't see before or do you go for an open field with no obstacles?

I knew a pilot that got killed landing on a road. He was a regular at the airport I worked at during the summers. He owned a construction company and would regularly fly over and inspect his construction sites. He flew in to the airport one afternoon to get fuel, the next day I was reading about his crash in the paper. After he left the airport he flew to a construction site. He had engine trouble and decided to land on a road near the construction site. A truck pulled out in front of him and he tried to pull up to avoid it, but there was a power line in the way which caused the plane to nose dive into the ground and catch fire. The crash site wasn't far from the airport, so one day I drove out there. There was a perfectly good field next to the road he could have landed on, but I'm guessing he went for the road to avoid damaging his plane.

Don't worry, it's just ESD! (Electrostatic Discharge)

OPT OUT!!

xxovercastxx says...

So opt out of the full body scan and get groped by a stranger instead. I'm not sure that sounds like freedom to me. I want a third option: get on the plane and take my chances.

Bermas is generally a crazy jackass, but he's mostly on point here. Why is he spouting off marketing buzz to the cops, though? "We're going to be on Alex Jones! We're the most popular alternative news site in the country!" As if the sheriff is going to say, "Fuck, really? We were going to arrest you but if you're going to be on Alex Jones, I guess this is all good."

kids that age should not be allowed near dogs. They pull, poke, prod etc. Then the parents wonder why the dog snaps...

Or the dog could just get up and walk away if it was bothered, which it clearly wasn't.

The video is short, maybe it did walk away. But, chances are, the kid would follow and the owner would allow it to. I have had 2 German shepherds (individually) and currently I have a Tamaskan(mighty wolf). I can assure you that they have, no matter how well trained, their moods. I never allowed my young kids - or any one elses - to pull, prod, torment, or stand on them (especially when the dog was sleeping). My point is simple. It's NOT worth the risk. There are innumerable reports of dogs just snapping and attacking kids and adults. In 99.9% of cases it is the owners, not the dogs fault. Why would anyone, in their right mind, take the chance of having their kid scarred for life(or worse), the dog put to sleep, and having to live the rest of their lives with the guilt. I'm sorry my response is a bit long winded but, sometimes, even the obvious needs pointing out.

The only thing "obvious" is that if you truly believe that is a real possibility, then you should not have those dogs to begin with. If they cannot be trusted, then don't worry about supervision, worry about why you are insistent on keeping them and maintaining a dangerous situation.

I am now done.

If you conceal your weapon, you're limiting the weapon's usefulness as a threat and as a deterrent.

Statistically, criminals usually conceal their weapons. If you're a criminal, would you rather take your chances with someone who is carrying? Would you pick a fight with someone carrying a gun?

How to Make a Better Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

probie says...

I guess I'm in the opposite camp as I only go for all natural peanut butter. I can't stand the taste of processed peanut butters anymore. It's the different oils (palm, cottonseed, rapeseed, soybean) that most manufacturers use; it does give the peanut butter an off taste, at least to me. Regarding the oil on top of natural peanut butters, that's just due to settling. Just pour off half of it and take five minutes to mix it up with the rest of the jar, you get a nice, thick, rich peanut butter that isn't going anywhere.

Also, I implore you to take a chance and spread your favorite peanut butter over a grilled hamburger one day. I had the same reaction until I tried it. C'est magnifique!

Another World HD - Official Android Trailer Classic PC Game

Just bought this -- on sale at $2.60, it seemed cheap enough to take a chance. My first impression is that the touch screen controls are even more awful than I thought they'd be, and make an already hard game pretty much impossible. Boo-urns.

Cheech and Chong on Legalizing Marijuana

my15minutes says...

since they mentioned the old standby excuse of "gateway drug", but didn't really answer it very well, this is what i've always said in response -

honestly, the opposite is true. if you try pot, and you like it, you're not more likely to try every other illegal drug. you're probably less likely to.
none of the potheads i know bother with any other drugs.

why would you take a chance on far more dangerous, expensive, and addictive substances, when pot is cheap, readily available, non-addictive, and has no risk of overdose?

does enjoying coffee make anyone want to try meth, simply because they're both stimulants?

Now that is just massive dickitude. I wouldn't think that was blankfist though, unless he's gone to a whole new level of asshole.

The timing is highly suspicious... and this has happened right after someone gave out dft's number on Reddit by the way, so I am not taking any chances. @marinara and @eric3579 and @deathcow agree that this is serious enough to merit attention.

How to fix an SLR with Peanut Butter

rebuilder says...

It would probably be a good idea to spray paint the part black before installing to avoid flaring.

Personally I'd go on thingiverse.com to see if someone's already made a lens hood:
http://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=lens+hood&sa=Search
and print it out. But then I have a Makerbot and when you have a 3d printer, every problem is plastic waiting to be put in the right shape...

In any case, makeshift solutions are very cool. Realizing you're able to solve a lot of problems yourself is very empowering, and usually fixing stuff isn't hard at all. Case in point, a while ago I dropped my camera, too, and the shutter button got stuck in the focus position. Olympus gave me a repair quote that came to about half the price of a new camera, so I thought I'd take a chance and see if I can fix it myself. All it took was undoing some screws, googling around a bit to see how to take some of the less obvious parts off, and presto, the button was unstuck and I saved a nice bit of cash.

Meh...just another monster flick with a huge FX budget and crappy story.

Stay home and play XBox, then.

Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, et al... I'll take my chances that this is gonna be yet another incredible movie from Ridley Scott. I don't go out to see a lot of movies nowadays, but once in a while one comes along that begs to be seen on the big screen. This ain't no "Transformers" or "Twilight" tripe. Can't wait to see it.
