the good the bad the ugly-why is it so good?

vil says...

There are only 5 good westerns (westerns I like and would recommend), spaghetti or not, these 5 should have a "subgenre" with a respectable name.

Spaghetti western makes me think Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - laughable movies.

The Pogues "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah"

A sad footnote, I just read that Phil Chevron died of cancer in 2013. He wrote some great songs like "Thousands are Sailing".

And "Rabinga", from the "Straight To Hell" soundtrack. That was a bizarre movie, with The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones in a spaghetti western in Almeria, Spain.

In a Valley of Violence Official Trailer 1, Ethan Hawke

SDGundamX says...

Yet another trailer where I feel like I've already watched the whole movie. I wish I could say this looks good. I like Ethan Hawke--just rewatched "Training Day" a couple of weeks ago--but I also just watched "For a Few Dollars More" and this doesn't look like it holds a candle to the old spaghetti Westerns.

I think the last good Western made was Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." The "3:10 to Yuma" remake had some good moments too.

Heh, Lorne Cardinal. Probably the first instance ever of a native actor getting a non native-specific role. It's a shame really, so much native talent out there and yet there's only a handful of celebrities out there. Adam Beach, August Shellenberg, Graham Greene, and even those prominent three are lost on most people.
Oh btw, that little brown kid with a pretty face, "Jacob Black" from the "Twilight" series. Yeah, his native lineage is dubious at best. Sadly just another tragic instance of another opportunity taken from us. I guess not much has really changed from the olden days of the "Spaghetti Westerns" when courageous cowboys gunned down droves of galloping Indians, many of whom were played by olive-skinned Italians.
Ofcourse, it's refreshing to see guys like Lorne, breaking the the barriers of racial type-casting. Saw him work as an MC at the Aboriginal Achievement awards awhile back, seems like a really chill guy.

I'm not sure what qualifies as "non native-specific role" and it's been a long time since I've seen it, but what about Jesse (Pat Johns) from Beachcombers?

We netflixed all three seasons, since we don't have cable either. They are gripping and have great characters. We'd get a disk with three episodes and swear we'd only watch one, but we'd be up all night watching them all.

I think John Wayne is exemplar of the previous administration. All brass and no balls. Inspired hundreds of thousands to go to their deaths, but never had the courage to go himself. A real cowboyard.

I don't have a tv... but if I did I am sure I would be a fan as I am familiar with the show from hearing about it. A friend of mine got me into all of the classic spaghetti westerns. Can't say I care for John Wayne so much. Was that wrong to say? Orange County's Airport here is "John Wayne International." Shame on me!
This is something I need to Netflix soon.

Thanks for busting David Milch out of the sherrifs jail Miss Iss. I have a friend who loves westerns but won't watch Deadwood because of the language. I pointed out to him that dozens of people are killed in most two hour western, yet only about four people die in all three seasons. Then again he thinks John Wayne was an actual war hero, so there's really no helping him. Are you a fan of the series?

Real footage of Japanese Kamikaze

elysse says...

This is both beautiful and terrifying footage. And the Spaghetti Western music totally makes it. I'm always stunned at how young they are... how they must have felt making that choice at the moment before they made the final dive. It must have been amazing, terrifying, gratifying and thrilling at the same time knowing that you are going out like a comet in one of the most elegantly designed planes of WW2.

With my luck I would have been one of the ones making the 1-wing slow spin.
