Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

RedSky says...

There is misogyny in some mainstream games (from memory, I found GTAV to occasionally veer in that direction) but the examples she gives are so wrong they're either exaggerated, ignorant or purposefully misleading.

Dragon Age? Hitman? Really? Neither of these games can be in any way characterised as misogynistic. Dragon Age has strong main female characters, it displays the mistreatment of women but also racism and genocide. Hitman actively punishes you for killing civilians and gender really has little bearing on the game at all.

Slightly more women play mobile games than men today. Even before that we had the success of the Wii's general appeal and the huge sales of The Sims series before that. AAA titles still veer towards violent themes but that is not misogyny. If her views gain traction it's more on the basis of the preconceived and uninformed views of the general adult public rather than reality.

Flying the Eurofighter Typhoon through the Mach Loop

artician says...

No kidding.

I just watched The Right Stuff for the first time today. My dad was a pilot. He taught me to fly at a very early age (landed my first plane at 5 years old!), and I love Flight Sims to death, but otherwise I never had the inclination to do the real thing as an adult. The older I get the more I want to though. Watching this video just makes me think this is the wildest ride in existence. Must be so much fun.

Firefly Online Trailer

SquidCap says...

That was awful, games like this just don't fit in the "coca cola" marketing world.. Firefly universe is dirty and gritty with a good sense of humor, not far from post-apocalyptic genre. It certainly is not Farmville or Sims, where this ad would fit perfectly.. If it wasn't Firefly, this ad would cause zero interest from my part and it makes me think that the game is utter crap.

Total fail. Hope the game is good (their website is down atm and it seems the publisher is not even remotely prepared for release yet, apart from some beer mugs etc merc)

Elite: Dangerous docking trailer

Sylvester_Ink says...

All ships have rotational inertia, provided you turn off flight assist mode. Without flight assist, you can fly with close to full Newtonian movement, with some exceptions that were made to keep combat fun. (For example, there is a speed limit cap, to prevent dogfights from degrading into high speed flybys.) This means that with flight assist off, any movement you make, you must make a counter-movement for to stop. This includes all 6 degrees of movement, from translational to rotational. Often, players will disable flight-assist to get into an advantageous position when maneuvering, then re-enable it so they can aim more easily. There are a few, VERY good players that can fight with flight-assist off completely, and it's a sight to behold:

In any case, E:D is looking very promising, despite getting a lot less attention than Star Citizen, and even No Man's Sky. Of all the upcoming space sims, this is the one I'm looking forward to most.

Hmmmm...it looked to me like the smaller ships didn't have rotational inertia. That's disappointing.
Looked purty!

Elite: Dangerous E3 2014 Trailer

Ralgha says...

It works beautifully with TrackIR. The UI is truly built for a HOTAS + [TrackIR or Oculus Rift] setup. I've been playing it since alpha and this is the real deal. The Star Citizen folks have their work cut out for them, even if they have 10x the budget. As a long time space sim fan I hope both games achieve greatness though.

I'm eager to see the space sim come back, but I feel the Star Citizen developers are really focusing too much on graphics and "immersion" where gameplay should come first. Compare it to Elite: Dangerous, which started production at the same time but on a smaller budget, and yet at this point in time, has a multiplayer alpha that is amazingly fun to play and shows huge promise for the rest of the game to come.
I want both to succeed, but I'll definitely be spending my money on ED first, and waiting for Star Citizen to flesh itself out later.

How to behave in traffic

luxury_pie says...

Both @Chairman_woo and @Rawhead are 100% correct.

Traffic behaves like a wave. Canceling the amplitude (not stopping and going all the time, rather going a constant speed) reduces the chain reaction.

If you really want to know the chain reaction happens because people are no machines. They need time to reaccelerate once stopped. This time adds up.

Here is an example of this: http://videosift.com/video/Traffic-Jam-Simulation

@scheherazade it's not about keeping space in front of you. It's about going a constant speed. You're parking lot theory seems to stem from playing Sim City too much.
I do realize less cars = less traffic. But jams will still occur. You just need two cars.

The Power of Empathy - Empathy Vs. Sympathy

brycewi19 says...

Though I don't think this is stupid, one does not get to simply make up new definitions of words.

That's what this lady is doing. She is wrong.

sym·pa·thy
[sim-puh-thee]
noun - harmony of or agreement in feeling, as between persons or on the part of one person with respect to another.
or
the fact or power of sharing the feelings of another, especially in sorrow or trouble; fellow feeling, compassion, or commiseration.

em·pa·thy
[em-puh-thee]
noun - the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.

Sympathy does not imply disconnect as she is trying so desperately to redefine. Rather, just the opposite. Though empathy is a very important thing to convey to another, it is an effort to TRY to understand one's feeling. Sympathy is the ability to ACTUALLY feel the other.

In a career field of caring (e.g. mental health therapist), sympathy can be dangerous mainly because the over-identification of an emotion with someone can lead to enmeshment and lack of perspective along with a difficult time centering one's self and self-caring after the other has left.
