Pole Vaulting with Allison Stokke

oohlalasassoon says...

Pole vaulted in high school. I sucked. Another guy, who sucked a bit more had his pole break in 4 pieces. His momentum kept him going into the pit so no big deal. It's not very uncommon, or at least it didn't used to be. Poles definitely have a shelf life and I'm pretty sure the policy at our school was to use poles until they broke.

You are confusing the website with the store itself.

Just because a doll is available on the website, doesn't mean it is available in the store.

We don't know if she is a reliable witness or if she did some edited camera pans to not show all the white dolls without accessories.

As for the price differential, I work in a retail store. It happens ALL THE TIME that someone wants to buy something and says that the shelf tag says something different. When you go to check, the tag had moved or someone had misshelved something. We don't know if she is deliberately lying about the price difference or if it is an honest error.

Bottom line -- Our Generation does NOT make a little girl doll of color, any color, with their own storybook.

Corporate America is indeed failing our little girls of color. It just isn't Target's fault in this instance, it is Our Generation.

So about the video

White dolls all get accessories - Wrong(some do some don't)
Black dolls dont get accessories - True as far as i can tell (but its not JUST the black dolls)
and the prices are the same - Wrong (price of deluxe dolls are more expensive)

Although there may be a deeper question regarding why a black doll isnt made with the deluxe option this women is still stating things that just aren't true.

I'll hold my downvote back for now.

I just went to the Our Generation website. They offer two different types of dolls. Regular dolls and Deluxe dolls with books. All Deluxe dolls are white white white.

Of the 24 regular dolls, 5 are dolls of color -- appears to me to be two black dolls, two biracial dolls, and one Hispanic doll. No Asian dolls to be seen.

The Deluxe dolls do cost more, so I think there might have been a shelf tag problem -- things get moved by customers, happens all the time.

So the problem isn't Target, it is Our Generation, which doesn't offer the product for Target to put on the shelf.

The title of the vid is okay -- it is still Corporate America not getting on board with the diversity thing.

Doubt - How Deniers Win

newtboy says...

We, meaning people, but yes, I did really mean America, the most prolific space fairing nation in the past. The Chinese may go there again soon, but not yet. I'll reserve my opinion about their ability until I see their manned rocket land there and return.

Florida is thousands of times the size of Kiribati and probably tens of thousands of times the population...and is FAR from the only place in jeopardy. I was not ignoring Kiribati, or the dozens of other island nations, or Venice, or Alaska, or, well, any place with a coast line, I was giving one example. It's a little funny that you decided to say 'Florida?!? It's far worse over in Kiribati' while you're trying also to say 'Don't panic, it's not bad'. WHAT?!? I think the people of Kiribati would disagree that it's not time to panic! ;-)

That's not the data I've seen. What I've read (from numerous sources) said the rate of rise is accelerating, not a steady rate over the last 100+ years, and it is expected to continue accelerating. When you say they can "cope" with it, what do you mean, because even the little amount of rise we've seen so far has already displaced tens of thousands of people, and very few have just adapted to the new situation? What evidence have you that there's a solution to the loss of useable land?
Oh, from your volcano example, I see that by "cope" you mean "die". That's not how I intend to "cope", thanks. ;-)
Kiribati has seen tsunamis, and survived them. Being in open ocean, most are barely perceptible. There's no continental shelf to make them 'grow'. That said, 1 foot of sea rise puts a large portion of the island underwater and makes the rest FAR more susceptible to damage from even a small tsunami.

Really? That's not what I've been reading for decades. California alone, which produces over 1/4 of America's food, is in the worst drought ever recorded due to climate change, and production is falling like a stone there. They are not alone by any means. Africa, Australia, etc have the same issues. It's not mainly an issue of violence world wide, it's an issue of lack of water. The violence is often CAUSED by the lack of food, making the 'men with guns' have a reason to steal and control food sources. If food were plentiful, it would be impossible for them to do so. Africa did have the means to grow their own food, before they stopped getting enough water. That's the biggest road block, the seed can be donated and fertilizer only increases yields, it's not needed in most cases to sustain crops.
Because some war torn countries have issues with roving gangs of gun toting thugs does not make gun toting thugs the reason Africa is food poor. The thugs SELL that food, so it doesn't just disappear, it still gets eaten, and there's still a huge famine, so.....

Yes, adopting new tech, even quick adoption, absolutely CAN be an economic boon, just not for the oil companies in this instance. Just consider the adoption of the automobile, it was fast, and great for the economy in numerous ways.

EDIT:And I have said clearly that I don't think anything done today will effect 2100. The greenhouse gasses stay in the atmosphere that long or longer, so today's change in emissions will only equate to a change in the climate after 2115, so we can't avoid 1 foot of sea level rise. We can, however, stop increasing the rate of change (the system reacts to greenhouse gas addition right away, but takes 100+ years to react to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, so we can make it worse, but not better than that prediction...and that's the road we're on, making it worse daily).

Yes, changing the resolution changed the measurements ON THAT ONE OUTLYING GLACIER ONLY. It explained why it alone wasn't following the models, which was because a large portion of it was incredibly high up, making it colder, but on average it was below the 'melt line', skewing the data.
78% less glacier (your figures) still mean more than 78% less runoff, so >78% less water....in areas that are already completely dependent on glacial water to support humans and already have water supply issues today. Even the low 65% number is disastrous.
The glaciers do not need to be gone in order to be useless as sources of fresh water. I did not say all glaciers would be 'gone' I said they would no longer supply the demand, and there's no known tech in the pipeline that can.
So, in short, please stop twisting and exaggerating what I write to create strawman arguments to shoot down. It gets old fast.

A Thrustmaster F16 FLCS/TQS combo is still resting comfortably on a shelf at home. You can smash a skull in with those and it won't even leave a dent on the base -- solid design.

Can You Split A Card? - Annie Oakley - Trick Shot

MilkmanDan says...

I'm not an expert, but I've shot a lot of rifles and have some gun-nut friends. Basically, NO, that isn't a normal posture. However, it seems quite effective for her.

She is basically using the shelf of her pelvis as the "ground" point of her elbow, almost like the function of a tripod if you were going to shoot while prone. That isn't normal, but then her hand position on that arm is even weirder -- she is propping up the rifle with what looks like middle and ring fingers making a "v" shape, then pointer just in front of the trigger guard, and thumb on the trigger guard / lever. Very very weird -- in general most people would put that hand further out along the barrel and just grasp the wood there. That would normally be more effective because the wider the distance between the contact points with your hands, the more steady and fine your aim can be. BUT, she obviously knows what she is doing and is using the stability provided by resting her arm on her pelvis to overcome that. She's a way better shot than me, so I wouldn't classify any of what I've said as "criticism", just noting that she does certainly have an unusual style.

By sound and size, the rifle is probably a .22. A .22 that size can be quite light, which would work well with her style of holding the weapon. I'd imagine that trying that with a bigger rifle, especially with a longer barrel, would be uncomfortably heavy on the fingers she is using to prop up the weapon. Plus, higher calibers would kick enough to necessitate actually grasping the forestock instead of just resting it on fingertips.

Even when I was warned against kick and barrel-rise when shooting an AR-15 (basically an M-16), the first time surprised me how much the weapon will jolt upward on rapidly fired shots unless you are ready to compensate for it...

impressive shooting!

question for someone who knows about such things: is her posture normal for shooting a rifle? at 1:15 and 2:09 she seems to be arching her back backward with her hip forward. It looks really unnatural.

This Is What You Look Like In Ultraviolet

jimnms says...

@moonsammy At 1:52 and 2:42 you can see it's just an off the shelf Canon DSLR. I'm assuming it has some sort of filter that only allows UV light through.

@jmd I don't think those are hot pixels. Notice the spots aren't always in the same place, and in some scenes aren't there at all. In the last scene the spot only shows up as the UV filter slides over, so it's possibly dust on the lens, filter or sensor.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on genetically modified food

RedSky says...

@Yogi

How can you prove a negative? Studies have consistently found no harm from commercially available GM foods. The one study to the contrary (Séralini, tumours in mice) was found to be fraudulent and retracted.

Even if the effects are not immediate, GM foods have been available since the mid 90s, you would expect after 20 years, for there to be a discernible harmful effect, if there is one.

@billpayer

One of the main benefits GM foods can provide is increased longevity and shelf, which help to reduce wastage.

GM yields in a Mediterranean climate for common western crops are not hugely improved. However, the benefits in harsh conditions to say drought and flood resistance are substantial.

This is particularly why it's so detrimental that the EU has rejected GM foods so universally. Domestic farmers may not see huge benefit, but African producers are forced to use substandard non-GM crops for both domestic and international markets.

This is because GM crops cannot be exported to the EU market and different crop types cannot be effectively segregated. This limits their yields, in turn raises prices in a region of the world with an unsustainable, rapidly growing population and increasingly harsh conditions from climate change driven desertification.

you know nothing billpayer snow.

the fact that facebook bought the company is what will give them enough funds to actually manufacture their own parts, as they need them to be, and not buy cellphone displays (and, I'm sure other off-the-shelf parts). It will actually help them make a better product.

The cables are needed, because of lag. A wireless device woulnd't be able to have input and movement lag as low as they are trying to make it be. And it is a very important point, because of motion sickness.

Wasted food in numbers

everyone buys food and lets it rot, wasting the entire process from ground to shelf, including all the transportation and environmental costs.

every individual does it. all of us. if we can see how to avoid it using a computer that can connect dots we can't that would be best. there are too many moving pieces for us to be as efficient as we could be with a better master control system!@

The most patriotic cat in Russia

SquidCap says...

Don't like those cats that have no ears, selective breeding gone too far. I mean, regular cats usually look like a little bit on the douche side but still cute, they got that independent charm, a bit of wild animal.. This breed just looks like it's selfish pampered a-hole (note, looks like not that they actually are..). The kind that looks at you when it is walking on the shelf he knows perfectly well he should not be and slowly drops that vase..

Those Russian "shelf toilets" are actually German in origin.

CreamK said:

Why does my dong has to touch the inside of the rim everytime i poop? And when are you gonna do something about that splashback? never? Thought so, you are pretty much just morons copy pasting 150 year old design that was a hole in a plane and no water beneath. Note, russians made an effort but that is even more horrible than anything we have now; it's basically a flat plane with the water on the front.. Everything fine except that the flat part is so close to your butt that you have to slowly rise, the water does not flush the dookie but you have to move yourself.. The worst toilet seat i've even encountered outside Polish trains.
