Frozen Steaks vs. Thawed Steaks

mintbbb says...

We usually grill steaks (charcoal grill - Mr. NetRunner is Mr. Grillmaster, he rocks!). But I usually end up getting a 4-pack from Costco, then having 2, 2 go to the freezer.. And then I never remember to take the ones in the freezer out to thaw in the fridge in time.

The problem is: I have a teeny freezer atm, I really can't do the freezing in a sheet pan before packing it up. Also, we love the 'just grilling on the grill' and not putting anything in the oven. But I WILL try doing it this way, sounds very tempting! Would be great for those rainy days when you really, really wanted steak but it just keeps raining!

Neil deGrasse Tyson on genetically modified food

xxovercastxx says...

This is exactly right.

"GMO" is agriculture taken almost to its purest form. We're rewriting the sheet music now rather than simply conducting the orchestra, but the end product is still to produce the symphony.

Instead of selecting for desirable traits over generations to get what we want, we can create it directly.

The problem, of course, is that some entities will and are using this new tool to do harm. If someone wants to protest that, I'll be right there with them, but don't ban hammers just because they can be used to hurt people. We have houses to build.

Farm animals weren't engineering by NATURE and NATURAL SELECTION, we did that shit. Bananas, wheat, dogs, horses, you name it, none of them exist now as they would without human intervention. Hell, there was a recent Top 15 video about his very subject.

We've been doing this for centuries and we've just gotten better at it.

Why do it? The yields might not be astronomical, but in lots of cases they enable some yield over nothing.

Should there be strong regulatory oversight? Of course, same way there is for any commercially produced food.

But the fact is, it's going to happen, and anyone who opposes it is pissing in the wind.

Nice. I was wondering how this could work, until I saw the cheat sheets. Great idea, support inclusiveness and learn a little something while you eat. I can dig it.

Q: Why do governments continue with experiments if there's not much truth to them?
A: Men who stare at goats (a few ppl fooled by ideas and passion can easily consume some government resources)
A: Magicians (show the audience one thing while you do another)
A: Bias perception (Misinterpretation of the results)
A: Progression (Legitimate achievements in technological advancements)

Either pick what makes you comfortable (mentally lazy), or utilize your critical thinking (worth breeding)

A rational mind staring into darkness will begin to see shapes and movements that aren't really there. It's due to mental cheat sheets, where the mind attempts to understand that which it doesn't by using current knowledge, assumptions, imagination and internal values/preferences/emotions (gross simplification).

An irrational mind more easily sees whatever is familiar/preferred to be seen. Those who stare long enough can become very difficult to persuade with an alternative view or bring back to a more rational position. (it's why teaching young humans 'what' to think is so much more defining than 'how' to think, re stubborn beliefs)

Yes humans are capable of some seriously great feats, but if you genuinely think that weather can be "controlled" to the extent he's referring to (while disregarding the far greater impacts that would occur globally for every smaller influence) then you're not likely to listen to reason, rather then continue to perceive that which you're predetermined to think.

Also it might help to listen to how he's making his points. It's psychological warfare, he's seeding you and getting you to defeat your own rational thought, poorly i might add, but still the attempt is there.
Why? By only making statements, your 100,000's year old critical thinking system will instinctively aim to challenge every point that isn't previously accepted (like how a cat instinctively chases a running non-threat target), so he mixes in the questions, the same questions, as repetition is the best form of learning (mind-raping)

And just to fuck with yas: if you 'knew' something crazy to be true, and as you spoke about it you could hear the crazy.. how would you convince a friend, a parent and a stranger?

The Ingenious Way South Korea Unclogs Toilets

Sagemind says...

Yes, it is way better.
1). First, that toilet isn't going to spill over. Ever had that happen? And with a heat register near by? Disgusting.
2). Two, do you realize how much Feces is splashed around the bathroom when you plunge? Not just on your floor, but walls, and on you, your clothes and possibly your face. It's not just the big drops, but the little ones, the ones that practically become airborne.
3). Three, Clean up afterwards, once you're done with a plunger, you need to clean it off, and if there is stuff sticking to it, as you can guess, that's not fun either. Not to mention, where are you going to clean it? in the bathtub? After you sanitize the plunger, now you have to sanitize the tub, or sink, or what ever as well.

-You're going to need to wipe down that toilet whether you plunge or use this sheet.
-This plastic sheet, looks strong enough that it's not going to break.
-And disposing it. Well, lifting it into a garbage bag, that just seems way easier.

The Ingenious Way South Korea Unclogs Toilets

newtboy says...

Um...yeah, because hand cleaning the toilet, then hand applying sticky plastic, then using your hands to plunge the thin plastic sheet (hoping it doesn't break or loose it's seal or you fall in), then removing a crap covered plastic sheet and disposing of it somewhere is SO much better than just using a normal plunger...ingenious Korea!

Solar FREAKIN' Roadways!

VoodooV says...

here's the problem I see with that...these things are initially going to be expensive. ideas like this only pay off when used widely. Sure I might be able to invest in making a driveway from these things and I might get a small return on my electric bill, but it just won't be very productive initially. standard catch 22.

but the bottom line is that we've got to invest in infrastructure...it's a necessity that we invest in technologies that show promise such as this. they won't get cheap until pretty much after we've invested in them.

but if they hold up, then it should work out. I figure that's probably going to be the biggest thing...how long are these individual hexes going to hold out? replacing a few here and there won't be a big deal, but replacing entire sheets of them for miles just won't work out long term.

Great White Shark Attacks Inflatable Boat - Now What??

Payback says...

The rigid-hull inflatable uses the tube more as a stabilizer than flotation. They only become necessary in rough seas or hard maneuvering. The tubes are attached to a short-sided fiberglass or aluminium hull, which provides the buoyancy. At the end, you can see them slowly making towards home.

Smaller Zodiacs use the tubes as the hull, with just a sheet of rubber hanging between the tubes as a floor, so when the tubes lose air they completely collapse. In order to carry more than 3-4 people, you need a rigid hull for strength. Otherwise it would just flop all over the place like an inflatable life raft.

Thanks mate, very nice comment of you.

Always like to hear different viewpoints, makes me consider ideas I hadn't and also bulk up my own point of view, so all good

I suppose they're all specific specialities of the broader business field, I would also add accounting but they are very broadly interrelated. For example in bank lending decisions, discounted cash flow estimations (finance) which are reliant on income statement and balance sheet information are just as important as IS/BS audit expertise (accounting) which assesses the credibility of their reporting. This is especially true for smaller, privately owned entities (who obviously can't rely on public equity, so are generally bank reliant). Large publicly listed companies have much more stringent auditing requirements already, and public disclosure means that they are highly open to scrutiny.

Economics beyond 101 basics is generally is more of an academic niche. The macroeconomic side looking at large scale GDP, inflation, employment etc., is relied upon in government, treasuries and policy think tanks. Large listed companies would certainly have a dedicated in-house team for consultations. Medium sized companies might contract dedicated industry research consultant firms, but outside of that their use is quite limited.

The microeconomic side is industry specific looking at competitive behaviour inter-firm, with suppliers and customers. It's generally a more wishy washy field which introduces some amateur psychology via behavioural economics and game theory. It's more of an academic field really. I can imagine large multinationals with few competitors employing them or hiring consultants. We have a near duopoly here in supermarkets and I can see them using microeconomic theory in pricing decisions for example.

I'll try again at a point-by-point answer for yas but geez man, you seem thicker than most.

I CHOSE to pester your banning-manner repeatedly because you were cold-hearted and in-general, the matter-of-fact un-welcomingly rude person to potentials who obviously either had some language-barriers some of them, while others simply did not read the long-winded faq-sheet buried in that un-intutive portion of the site map (notwithstanding, MOST of the fuckers you ban are spamtacular and obviously not giving a damn an anyhow....GOOD JOB. ATTA-BOY. Clean the place up, not slighting you for that aspect of your fun here).

Your didactic reasoning supports your hollow assumptions (if such feeble tripe could be called that) and here in these latest and repeated insults and accusations concerning myself all we see are petulant forays into your own limitations in the realm of deductive reasoning at best, or 180 degrees off-kilter at their crudest and worst. MEANING, your assumptions of my legal status and sexual proclivities in particular, as you struggle at what seems justification for your delusional rants. You're basically unilaterally seeking to defame my personal integrity and character because you feel bad about me having poked you so much about yer ban-user fun here.m Real simple. Not too much thinking required, and you are over-thinking to stroke your own, knight-in-rusty-sheriff's-badge honor, plain and fucking simple.

I tried the last comment to show you your misinterpretation of meaning by using the definition of 'haitus', the same which has no fixedm limitation other than that of the will of the vacationer. Read a fucking dictionary maybe, with a view to meaning rather than the view of how it suits your own confabulation?

I didn't say did I, that I was taking anything but a hiatus, which could be long or short....and if you know me at all you know I won't stand for insolent crackers who in my absence, with a personal hard-on to burn me and shit all over my work and time logged here on this site, one of which I have been on since near it's inception, ya thick lump?. Did you think I'd let the place pull a kronospissant on me again? From the likes of who?! You may want to get a fucking clue.

You need some some growin'-up there fatwa (look it up) if ya think my skin ain't thicker than yer skull.

You take shit to pedantically literal to be hanging your shit in my store and expecting me to take you anything more than a seriously misanthropic humanoid.

Tired of being polite with you chicco, yer obviously in need of some quality human interaction and maybe some therapy to deal with the Aspberger's, unless yer dysfunction be something simpler to counterman. I am unqualified to determine such as, "I Am Not A Mental Health Professional."

Ain't 'private' anymore either, your shit screams abuse of the site, for all to see.

And neither can you or will you. YOU DARE NOT...CANNOT...but impotently deny and deflect. You have made much many times at others not answering point after point. Why not me.

You have not taken me up on or put to me to prove them as I have given you opportunity to repeatedly...why not? I know why...as do you. I have only spoken in verifiable facts. Your actions...facts about you and your actions. And...they are all available to everyone here as they were to me. I reiterate, derivable from your own actions and words here.

And privacy...respect...you deserve the same as you have given and give to others on this site or rather have not.

Gay Hugs - An Experiment With Homophobes

chingalera says...

Label it 'gay' and you're guaranteed it'll sift and this represents the credo of the first sentence on the Videosift fact sheet? Which reads:

"Members submit videos from the best video hosts from around the Net to be voted on by other Sifters with only the best being "sifted" up to the front page."

Historically on this site, anything promoting, showcasing, or challenging homophobia has invariably made it to the front page though by far, many of the offerings do not represent the best video content on the web.

This reminder being not at all for those who love all things gay or even the folks who have an agenda-oriented motivation for posting a shitload of gay-themed videos rather, it's more of an indictment for the cunts who use that statement in the faq's as an excuse to indict others publicly for "not adhering to the stated guidelines" when their true motivation is a personal dislike for a particular user. I call these morons haters who don't know themselves very well.

Really man, call it rain while pissing down my leg, it's glaringly obvious regardless of some paltry, long-winded defense of your actual motivations for littering the site with spamtacular drivel...

Now I'll watch the video and vote according to my personal preference, like the majority of people here do, whether or not they chose to admit it.
