Having lived in a middle-eastern country for years, I can attest to the validity of the idea that the Burqa is in no small part a cultural item, rather than an item symbolizing religiosity or patriarchal oppression; many women are proud of their head wear.

Orhan Pamuk's novel "Snow" deals with this very issue. The book is about how in an increasingly secular Turkey, many women were being prohibited from wearing head scarves, and the many suicides that ensued. A fictional account of a very real story.

i have several observations

I am the product of the public school system 100% and in my time spent in these kinds of schools I've been limited from wearing hats of any kind blank or not, scarves, bandanas, specific colors, baggy pants/clothing, shirts with any number of sayings, specific kinds of jackets and so on...
This man knew exactly what he was doing when he sent his son off to school that day. This man used his son as flame bait to try and make a statement and slander Obama in the most ignorant way possible. I see this as nothing more than a way to "energize" the ignorant republican base that live in his community.
