"Lettuce" was Lonely Island's first ever SNL Digital Short. Here is an excerpt of a magazine interview with Andy Samberg talking about how it came about:

from Wired Magazine interview May 2011: "The producers... told us they were always looking for pretape material to change over the sets and costumes. We went out with Will Forte and did the first digital short, which was "Lettuce", basically a very dramatic conversation conducted while really vigorously eating giant heads of lettuce. We brought it in, showed it to them, and they said, "Yeah, maybe." They put it in dress, it got laughs. Then they put if on air. For them, it was incredibly cost-effective, and it filled that gap." And a legend is born....

There was a period in my life when I really did eat a lettuce by the head. It was my first time claiming independence from my parents and I was trying to save money by cooking at home. Of course, I was never good at it, and I was too lazy to prepare the ingredients I shopped.
Eventually I starting having my meals standing up in front of the kitchen sink, with my plates and forks on the kitchen counter, and the food that I'd eat would either come directly from the stove or from the sink, and I would bite into them right then and there.
Lettuce is quite sweet actually. All you need is some olive oil, ground pepper and vinegar. Yea.

I have no idea what the fuck this is, but I love it HAHAHA
