Queensland Policeman's reaction to McKinlay River Filling

200KM/H Crash Test

Asmo says...

Might be something relevant to countries where they have high speed roadways, but honestly, I doubt there's a car out there that could maintain any sort of integrity in the driver area for such a catastrophic stop. Most of the vehicles in the second video just disintegrate.

Heck of a thing to have on the resume though... "I fuck up cars for a living".

I wonder if they actually learn anything at those speeds. Assume they must or they wouldn't do it. Be interesting to know what it might be.

A couple of points.
1) several people stated that the truck driver sped up to keep her out. There is no proof of that. There is proof of a decreasing amount of space between the truck and the vehicles ahead of him.

2) The truck in which the video is being shot from appears to be a semi and not a pickup. You can not expect them to speed up or slow down like a passenger car.

3) The vehicles in front of the truck appear to be slowing down due to conditions in front of them, causing the decreased distance between the truck and traffic in front of him.

4) Even though the audio is not that good, there does not appear to be a change in the engine noise to indicate that the truck driver was speeding up to keep her out.

It appears to me that several vehicles in the slow lane saw that there was a semi in front of them that they wanted to avoid. They saw the space in front of the semi in the high speed lane and decided to occupy it. They then passed on the right hand side of the truck.

Sec. 545.001. DEFINITIONS. In this chapter:

(1) "Pass" or "passing" used in reference to a vehicle means to overtake and proceed past another vehicle moving in the same direction as the passing vehicle or to attempt that maneuver.
------------------------------------

Sec. 545.057. PASSING TO THE RIGHT. (a) An operator may pass to the right of another vehicle only if conditions permit safely passing to the right and:

(1) the vehicle being passed is making or about to make a left turn; and

(2) the operator is:

(A) on a highway having unobstructed pavement not occupied by parked vehicles and sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in each direction; or

(B) on a one-way street or on a roadway having traffic restricted to one direction of movement and the roadway is free from obstructions and wide enough for two or more lines of moving vehicles.

She was passing on the right by their definition and she did it illegally The truck being passed did not meet the requirements to legally allow passing on the right.

Seeing the video and having read the appropriate law that applies in this situation, It is my opinion that the driver of the passenger vehicle was at fault.

Red Neck trucker says NO to this blonde trying to merge...

eric3579 says...

She/ he was unsafe in cutting in. A annoying shitty driver. The truck driver however caused the accident.

Also i assume the truck driver saw her/him as he chose not to slow down when moving off the roadway. You would think he would have broke hard to avoid the situation/accident.

If we all made driving decisions based on principal when other make poor driving decisions many of us would be in hospital or dead by now. People who make choices like this are idiots.

Road Burn At 60 MPH

Oh man, that moment when the board starts to wiggle.. Scary feeling and you can't stop that vibration once it starts, you know it's bail time.

I had to once bail from 50km/h back in the eighties, the moment my feet touched the ground on that speed, man... I took two strides and went over ten meters with each and they HURT, "BLAM, BLAM".. But staid upright, small scrapes from tunnel wall and very very sore soles. Didn't go for top speed after that one. Speed was measured as there were a very busy roadway parallel and the minimum speed is 50km/h in that point, usually more.. And we were passing cars... No helmets, no kneepads, just fingerless gloves, t-shirt and jeans. It is a small miracle i'm still alive.

Stupid spectator is almost run over while rally

newtboy says...

What the hell? Since when do people not stand right on the roadway? That's the first rally I've seen where they even tried to keep people off the road. Is this a new thing?
In off road racing we had to consider those people 'bushes with clothes on'. If you think of them as people lining the track, there's no way you can go full speed with confidence. I hated that.

The future of ghost-riding?

Porksandwich says...

I'd love a car that could self drive, then you could sleep on your way to anywhere.

And if they can fit it with a decent traffic accident/traffic problem system and let people bypass then we wouldn't be sitting around doing anything in traffic as often.

There's still going to be shit falling into roadways, animals running out, car tires exploding, etc....but just taking the general stupidity and assholery off the road would be a nice change of pace.

Duke Engineering's new four stroke "axial" engine

Read the last few paragraphs to see that this is basically another "Solar Roadways" situation. E.g. too much hype, not enough practical purpose.

Let's breakdown the problems here: extra complicated machined parts, excess usage of oil (to lube everything up), low rpm and horsepower due to the amount of material needed to move (sure a standard engine might weigh more, but less of it actually moves), additional wear over time, and the potential for explosion with extended use.

Basically, these things are only used in torpedoes, where a massive explosion is the whole point.

Solar Roadways - Reality Check

When the snow falls it is already frozen - snow is just small particles of ice - and it requires just as much energy to melt the water as incoming falling snow as already formed ice. And then you have to get rid of all the water from melted snow and ice. Guess could heat the sides of the road as well - deep into the ground.

What _would_ make more sense than Solar Freakin' Roadways could for example be Solar Freakin' Rooftops - on a grand scale.

Apparently it takes a shitload of energy to melt ice, but how much energy does it take to prevent ice from forming?

Solar Roadways - Reality Check

Payback says...

I do have to agree with the LEDs not being seen during the day, but there is a tech that creates reflections in colour. Sorta like a bad-ass Amazon Kindle. That would work for the Solar Freakin Roadway. They wouldn't need LEDs at all then, even at night. Headlights would produce the light needed. Those bumps would become pixels.

Why glass anyway, how about transparent aluminium?

I do like his idea of covered roadways though, with the solar cells on the roof. Probably end up being the same cost per mile as solar freakin' roadways.
