Ancient Muslim Origins of Everyday Pleasures

"Muslim"? Why not say Arab, Persian or whatnot?

I don't think sorting discoveries by religion is something the Islamic world wants to tread into...

There's a strong feeling of nostalgia among Muslims for their once-great empire. Yes indeed, they ruled a fair share of the Old Continent for some time and had very structured societies back in the day, but their advancement has stagnated somewhat. Arabs were renowned for their knowledge of "fringe" sciences such as astrology (not astronomy!), alchemy (not chemistry!) and even some hard sciences such as mathematics and physics. It is undeniable that these forays were vastly precipitated and aided by knowledge inherited from Greek thinkers.

Islamic shortcomings are however ironically linked to the "Muslim" aspect of the whole thing. They adopted an empirical view of things, the exact opposite of the rational impetus the Greeks were leaning towards. Another impediment was that the Muslim world was constantly entwined with the Koran, which is to say that theology played an authoritarian role in legislative, economic, social and pedantic spheres. This prohibited many possible advances.

One reason Europe thrived so much during the Renaissance is that these spheres (although the Church did dominate social life) were not so interwoven as to proscribe scientific endeavours with much aplomb.

Yellow Sticky Notes

Inspiring. I wrote him the following email, because I fancy myself a man of action:

Jeff,

I just watched your Sticky Notes animation and wanted to let you know it moved me to tears. I’m in the middle of a self renaissance, but sadly, I recognize the pattern and am afraid that I will spend the next 5 years being moved to tears with no change. I spend my days dulling out wisdom, yet I feel hollow and immovable; inspired by others, and yet, uninspired to create. I am an artist and a writer who has created nothing of worth. I’m at work making games work, yet I cannot make me work.

I feel, however, a bit closer to freedom after having watched your animation. Thanks.

If Islam never had a Renaissance, then where did we get algebra and algorithms? Your ignorance hurts me.

The important distinction campionidelmondo is that this is 2008, and no-one is killing in the name of Christianity. The Crusades and Christian Emperialism ended quite some time ago.

The Muslim world's drive, however, is still fueled by the ideology of a 6th century sectarian battalion. Islam never had a Renaissance... never had the period of self-doubt and introspection that Europe went through... this may be in part because just question Koranic validity is punishable by death!

Cheers to jwray for going against the grain.

Funny thing about the Christian bible is, it doesn't ask me to go out and lay waste to the 'infidels' or beat my wife, or anything of the sort.

But it doesn't say those things, thats a common misconception, the Qu'ran was written as book of religion, of law and of warfare, because the Prophet was not only someone of faith but also a warrior and a statesman. Further more there is plenty in the Christian bible that is also cruel and archaic anyway as well so. It does contain passages on conduct of warfare, that does not allow killing of innocents, women and children that seeks to accept negotiation over war.

Of course extremists bypass this conveniently by saying infidels are "against" Islam, or rather are seeking to eliminate the faith and thus its okay to kill those who are not Muslim. But a closer examination shows that more Muslim people are killed by terrorist actions then anything else, major scholars of modern Islam have spoken against that and against Osama himself. The events of 9/11 brought more hardship and misery upon Muslim people then any western populace.

With regards to womens rights, you are diluting the issue again by thinking that Saudi Arabia which forces women to wear head covering is the example of what Islam is. That is nonsense, Saudi Arabia practices Wahhabi Islam, a extreme reading of Islam with various add on rules, people there in itself question that here is a video of a Saudi writer questioning this. The faith there has more to do with keeping political power then anything else. Frontline's documentary the House of Saud explains this issue very well.

The Wilder's assumption that Islam would destroy Europe is vapidly stupid, Europe was ruled by Islam already, another aspect covered in the Islamic History of Europe. Here is a quick clip that shows how the interchange of information from the Greeks to Muslims to Europeans lead to Renaissance. Also When the Moors Ruled Europe.

There is much more that is seen all over http://islam.videosift.com, the religion is not perfect but you need to look at it with a wider appreciation to History and actually understand it before claiming simplistic uninformed views from a few extremist talking heads. Start with What is Islam.

A good post dealing directly with Extremism is Doha Debates video. Where At the second Doha Debates Special on February 28th, 2006 guest speakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Professor John Esposito and Diana Buttu, answered questions from the student audience on the issue of how to combat extremism and improve relations between the West and the Muslim world.

You've got some mad photoshop skillz, schmawy. I always look forward to seeing what you're next avatar will be. Your current one might be my favorite, but the Renaissance and engineer cats were pretty funny too.

Yet, amazingly, the cat looks good in every outfit. Go figure. I look ridiculous in almost everything but a clown suit.

ah, well, it's funny, I usually try to change my avatar to match a theme that I have in my queueueuue at the time. Right now it's a lot of renaissance and midieval stuff. It was the knight's helmet for my silver star, cowboy hat for a bunch of vids for choggie's Wildwestshow, and soforth. You can usually get the gist of what i'm sifting at the moment by the avatar. Serious Cat is Serious like that. The tophat is the default if I don't have it together.
