After studying Spanish for years and helping out latinos who need help with English I"m always glad I grew up speaking it. Never mind the vowels, figuring out the accented syllable in a word can be an ordeal. For example "democrat" and "advocate" both are accented on the first syllable but "democracy" and "advocacy" have different stressed syllable locations.

Spelling and pronunciation are far less complex in Spanish and it's easy to determine the accented syllable in a word. But they make up for it with the subjunctive tense. And the past preterite vs. past imperfect, I still struggle with those.

The NY Times tracked down the first poster, an 18 year old kid in Georgia, who says it's the pronunciation of Laurel, recorded through his speakers, directly from vocabulary.com with no layering or tricks.

Still, I'm glad English is my first language. Really I am truly sorry for anybody that has to pick it up second. Maybe it's not the worst (no/little grammatical gender!) but the hodgepodge of different spellings and pronunciations is awful.

Yeah, I scrolled down to comment on the repeated nuke-yoo-lar pronunciation as well. That sort of glaring goof makes it even more difficult to take their channel seriously.

I stand by my overly pedantic comment and note I made it after upvoting.

I looked on YouTube, and most of the comments seem to be between people like me and people calling them ghey faggits. At least people who claim if a large group start saying something incorrectly, that means it's now correct.

It's not like saying axe instead of ask, where it's a pronunciation variance, but means the same.

It's like the statements:

1)In my accident the other guy was charged with driving with undue care and attention.

2)In my accident the other guy was charged with driving without due care and attention.

The first is what a lot of people say, but it still isn't correct because it means the exact opposite of the second, correct statement. Driving with undue care means you are giving the driving care and attention to which it is not due. You are being "too careful". Why would you be charged with being too careful?

I'm so glad that pronunciation fad died, and we've all agreed to revile and attaint those who, in their error, still hew to jiffist heresy.

I have studied Spanish all my life and am constantly reminded how grateful I am that I didn't have to learn English as a second language. The difference in the details of spelling and pronunciation between the two languages is orders of magnitude apart. On the other hand verbs, nouns and adjectives are less complex in English. I'm still trying to get a grip on the subjunctive tense after all these years.

It brings me so much pleasure just to hear these names spoken on a popular tv show. His pronunciation though, of Gollum, Sauron and Edain - ugh - and the flame of Anor and the secret fire aren't the same thing. Come on, Stephen.
