Brave Texas woman speaks out against legislators

chingalera says...

"That is typical of Texas rightwingers"

Love the broad brush-strokes, I use similar stereotypical sentiments when referring to MOST Americans regardless of their "state" of incarceration

So newtboyP, you left Texas at 13 because you had to, you lived with your parents at age 13 I trust, and semantics-be-damned, so you didn't "run", so please, "Go fuck yourself."(see, simply because I used some ad-hom the irony of your own directed at me is lost entirely in rules and regulations and adhesion to conduct)

I'd move to some idyllic utopia within this country but the only places that appeal to me have too many rednecks or too many pretentious university students-Sorry mate, I don't fit your convenient groups or labels we're a bit more enigmatic than all that.

You wanna analyze something how about picking-apart your last few sentences lamenting the mentality of everyone in a state 2/3 the size of Europe and again, using convenient labels and broad generalizations that fans of such tripe can soak the gravy up with after eating the manna falling from their asses like it was sent down from God herself.

I've lived everywhere but the eastern seaboard mate and "being" anywhere now is about as good as the shits gonna get-Your own ideas that grass is greener politically somewhere else and therefore better than state X over state Y,... self-indulgent and illusory.

How to (Properly) Eat Sushi

shatterdrose says...

Way too seriously? Or you mean, people who appreciate the finer details? I find people who think others "take it too seriously" just don't appreciate things enough.

Now, there are snobs and pretentiousness abounding. But that doesn't mean those of use who actually understand the meaning, history and complexity of certain things, such as sushi or coffee, doesn't mean your lack of understanding and appreciation devalues anything for us. Quite the contrary.

You'd probably be the one to say my spending $4,000 on a cheap mountain bike is pretentious or taking it way too seriously, but unless you're "serious" about what you enjoy, you can't appreciate the differences it makes. Aside from that, you may as well just blend everything together into a mush and drink it through a straw. Don't want to get too serious about eating my food after all.

@arekin "Eat it however you "like it", but don't begin to argue that its the right way to eat sushi."

See the the thing is, I'm not the one making this claim, I'm saying that "the right way to eat it" is a silly notion. It's like when people take coffee way to seriously.

How to (Properly) Eat Sushi

chingalera says...

Oh yeah, and Oregon. Lived in Portland before the mainstream Hipster-hijack, back when pretentious hippy-douchebag was in the incubation stages (1991-2).

Yeah, a lotta good sushi to be had there and the primary reason?? Pretentious kids from all over the country flocked to the land of no sunshine to escape the repression of their upbringing brokered by their disillusioned hippie parents who drank the Babylonian Kool-Aid at University (incubator for ineffectual putties), to bask in the aroma of their own farts.

You'd fit right in there gwiz

How to (Properly) Eat Sushi

NinjaInHeat says...

To anyone offended by the "pretentiousness" of this video:
You just don't get it do you? You can't compare this stuff to the way you eat cornflakes or how you prefer to take your hamburger.
What he's talking about, what most people seem to completely misunderstand, is that sushi is ALL about the fish, it's what differentiates good and bad sushi, it's what makes quality sushi so expensive...

Now, you can eat however the fuck you want to eat, but you need to understand that when you go to a fancy sushi restaurant and you dip your entire nigiri in soy sauce mixed with wasabi and then even add ginger on top, you're throwing your money down the drain.
It's the equivalent of ordering a 100$ medium-rare steak and covering it in ketchup, then deep-frying it.

If that's how you choose to take your steaks, enjoy. But pretending there's no validity in the many ways different cultures around the world have of enjoying extra-fine foods and of enhancing one's ability to appreciate the taste of extra-fresh ingredients is just childish.

The only important thing to take away from this is that if you're at a good sushi joint, you only use soy sauce when the sushi chef says to. Sushi is a delicate dish.

The rest was just pretentiousness.

Glass How-to: Getting Started

MilkmanDan says...

I'm not too concerned about the privacy implications:

1) Don't use your real google account; make a new one with no "friends", false name and other data. I'm sure this removes some of the "features", but probably nothing you can't live without if you're concerned about privacy issues. In the meantime, feel good about yourself for "stickin' it to the man" and making google's advertising database think that all of your browsing history/etc. is being done by a 93-year-old woman from Abu Dhabhi named "Beverly Knickerbocker".

2) If you're extremely concerned about google knowing what you're looking at 24/7 because of the camera on the device, I'd be happy to sell you a small piece of electrical tape "digital privacy filtration screen 2.0" for the low-low price of $10.

*edit* -- I don't want one of these things myself, but I'm not vehemently opposed to their existence. With some sort of firmware update that puts a configurable open-source "OS" on them that allows you to control exactly what comes in and what goes out, might be more interesting. But in the meantime, it isn't privacy concerns (or even worrying about looking like a dork -- totally lost cause there) that make Glass a non-sale to me. It's simply that I don't think I'd get much positive use out of them, particularly compared to cost.

*further edit* That was a fun rant you linked to @dag. I think he needs to relax a little. Or maybe just get out ... less? When you see pretentious douchebags everywhere, maybe the solution is staying home?

Alison Brie reenacts internet memes

MilkmanDan says...

To me, saying .gif as "jif" is rather like answering the phone and saying "this is he", or referring to "attorneys general". You might be technically/grammatically correct, but most people are going to think you sound like a pretentious *&%#. If you're cool with that, cool. If not, go with the more common yet less "correct" version, and roll your eyes at anyone that calls you on it.

CNN Sympathizes with High School Rapists

chingalera says...

No arekin, what you are watching is a standard hack journalism piece form an news org notorious for such tripe-"Poppy Harlow" here (pretentious and douchey female-reporter name), is attempting to infuse the story with some heart-wrenching emotionalism and grave tone..
It's a rape honey, cut to the sentencing segment as you spin the tale of these poor athletes with their lives ahead of them who double-teamed someone without her consent. Get a shot of the big, blubbering one there as his counsel consoles him!

Where's more Waldo in this unprofessional ballad of useless information about these douchebag rapists? They came from a troubled family...blah blah blah.."father a former alcoholic??"- Uhh, what the fuck does that even mean?!

Yet another time-filler offered-up from CNN, their standard fare, an over-dramatized example of developmental-disability in our distracted society. This is not journalism, is fucking Maury Povich and people throwing chairs at they baby-daddys.

Poppy, thank you for edifying us with that useless wind-session. Please get a job that assists in the evolution of the human condition...like on a crabbing boat in Nova Scotia!

arekin said:

Where is the sympathizing, all I'm seeing is reporting? It's not like anyone is saying that this judgement is undeserved, they are reporting on the consequences of these men ruining their victims life and in turn ruining their own. I feel like people suddenly expect CNN to be their with pitchforks and a noose.

What It's Like To Read the Game of Thrones Books

Drachen_Jager says...

@mentality

You can enjoy the series if you like. I'm sure you have your reasons. I merely gave the reasons why I think it's a poorly written series. You can't dispute that, unless you claim I am not allowed to have my own opinions (which from what I can see are supported by many, many ex-George R. R. Martin fans).

I don't, and I am far from alone in my feelings toward the series. Every GoT booster says the same things as you. Problem is, it's a load. I read plenty of atypical fantasy, most of which I really enjoy. I stopped reading GoT when I realized it wasn't fun to read anymore.

Oh, and all the characters you mention either sucked IMO or were inaccessibly stupid, cruel, or annoying.

Pretending that it's good, because it's not enjoyable, is just pretentious by the way.

Taking photos with polaroid film that expired October 1978

ponceleon says...

So basically Instagram? I really wanted to like this, but two things bugged me: first, the editing with all that stuttering and shit. Second, the fact that in the end it is just another picture that looks old but really isn't. This whole instagram trend to make pictures look shitty on-purpose needs to die. Purposely making a picture look bad misses the point entirely IMO. I know, I know, it's art and people can do what they feel, but I'm just saying that it feels pretentious like 100,000 douchey hipsters with iPhones taking pictures of powerlines through crappy filters to make them look washed out... just saying.
