Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test - The Full Story

MilkmanDan says...

I find it laughable that they allowed the Jeep engineers to attempt to "fix" the problem on-site. The important variables are: A) vertical center of gravity, B) track (width between wheels), and C) tires and tire pressure (coefficient of friction). Probably in that order.

They can't do much of anything significant to alter any of those variables on-site -- they are design issues. Loading the vehicle down with a shitload of weight to lower the center of gravity (a little) "helped" slightly in terms of the roll, but put way more stress on the tires. Still, it did provide some useful information to the engineers in that they know to focus redesign work on getting the engine mount and other heavy bits lower in the frame.

So the thing to take away from that is that yes, the Jeep needs a redesign (I wouldn't buy one with that problem), but don't read too much into the "failures" caused by their adding weight to the vehicle. I'd wager that if you loaded the same weight into the Volkswagen and Volvo they tested/praised, you'd get a hell of a lot of blowouts also. Kudos to those models for not needing a redesign and handling the test well, but to me I saw the Jeep engineers simply doing what was possible on-site to figure out what needs to be done to address the problem.

I disagree. Saved Christians are compelled to help as a result of their salvation. Before my salvation I helped people because I wanted to hear people's praises of how good I am. Now I do it because of the love of the Lord. There is a difference because the later is a selfish sacrifice whereas the former is vanity. This selfish attitude is the fruit of a true Christian. Not saying non-Christians don't behave this way. However when faced with adversity and other hardships people's motivations are tested. If I only had earthly motivations then I would falter.

So before you did it because you wanted to hear people praise you for your good works, and now you do it because you want an invisible man to think your a good person for your good works. So nothings changed, just the source of your affirmation. Doing good works shouldn't require ANY source of affirmation other than your own. You do them because you want to do them, not for love from people, god, or anyone else. Don't lessen yourself or your works by giving them a reason for being done. Do it because its the right thing to do, end of story.

Curvespiration

spoco2 says...

I hate things like this. They take obesity and try to dress it up as self empowerment. "You don't need to slim down for society, you're beautiful the way you are"

Um... you're killing yourself being that fat. That is not sexy, that is not healthy, that is not worth 'creating a riot' over.

This really gets my goat because it's taking one thing, the media's obsession with being very skinny, which should be scorned, and killing it by trying to suggest the only other option is being obese.

Properly, healthy sized women's bodies should be praised and adored. Curves are sexy, (although some people are just naturally skinny as well, so shouldn't be 'hated' for being very skinny and a bit shapeless) and there is not enough natural body shapes and sizes being shown in the media.

BUT

THESE women are not healthy, they are not 'natural', they are not to be praised. They are fat, they are overweight, they are morbidly obese (not all of them are all of these things, but some of them certainly are). This thing of 'just be happy with what you are' thing seems, in these cases, to be a cop out and a way of not trying to be a healthy size. Which is wrong.

The western world is getting stupidly fat on average, and this needs to be halted, not praised. You don't just give up on trying to get people to be healthy by shifting the goal posts of what we're supposed to find attractive or healthy. It doesn't work like that, you can't just say 'OK, morbid obesity is not a problem anymore, as long as you feel sexy'.

Holy Stromboli! WTG Rasch! Gratulationer! You are already buried in a deluge of love and admiration. You deserve all the praise you've gotten and a whole lot more. Thank you for for being a part of why I love the Sift and for everything you do here. Wow, a thousand stars and only 5 vids in your PQueue? Now that's quality!

But despite my contribution, apparently now i'm LESS valuable to videosift than i was when my first video got promoted.
Can you imagine being in that position? Apparently my contributions have given me negative value to this community.
It feels rough, believe me.

Just so you know it: I have NEVER felt that anyone on VS was less valuable because of their lack of star points. Being valuable to other people is something you have to earn, and it's impossible to do that via some arbitrary reward scheme on the internet. And believe me when I say that you have earned it by the power of your own personality, nothing else.

Of course, having a high visible rank might give you a podium to shout from, and might make more people prone to read your comments. But when the comment is finally read, I believe that it is the content alone that influences the reader's jugdment over you. So gather together the praise you have received during your time here, and wear that as a badge instead. At least to me, that is much more impressive than a star or a gem next to your name.

*Fearfully made? Who writes this stuff?

Answered my own question: Psalm 139:14 declares, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

One of God's many ghost writers wrote it.

Penn & Teller - The Bible Myth

SilentPoet says...

Downvote for instead of saying "Maybe this book should not be taken literally page to page, cover to cover." they say basically say "All of this book="bullshit."

A good bit of the Bible is supported by history. Many of the Bible's battles are known to have happened. The Bible even goes so far to give details of certain battles. It is even sometimes used as a historical source.

Now, lets go through all those verses that Penn and Teller starting pulling out around 8:30.

Exd 21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

God permitted slavery to exist in both Old and New Testament times. But this does not mean that slavery was a God-ordained system. Slavery was an invention of fallen man, not of God. Nevertheless, God allowed it to exist the way He allows other things to exist that He does not approve of: murder, lying, rape, theft, etc.
God also works within the system of fallen man and makes allowances for the freedom and failures of mankind within that system. We see this, for example, in Jesus saying that God allowed divorce because of the hardness of peoples' hearts (Matt. 19:8). The fact is, people are sinners and do things contrary to the will of God. But, even though people have murdered, lied, raped, and stolen, God has still used people who've committed these sins to accomplish His divine will. Moses murdered an Egyptian but was used by God to deliver Israel. David committed adultery but was promised to have the Messiah descend from his seed. This is proof that though God desires that people not do much of what they do, He permits them their freedom, yet uses the system and the people according to His divine will.
In the case of a slave being property, that is simply the way things were done back then. As I said, God worked within the fallen system of man and put limits and guidelines concerning the treatment of slaves.

Exd 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

While the New Testament assures us that the 10 commandments were not drafted simply for "another age.", Romans 13:1-10 assures us that the Church has adopted them for our time as well. However, since the whole Old Covenant (the Mosaic Law, as specified in 2 Cor 3:7-14) has been set aside (Hebrews 7:18; 8:13; 10:9), then the Church can pick the religious and moral practices from the Old Testament as she sees fit to use in the New Testament. Therefore, she can decide to use the 10 commandments but reject the civil and ceremonial laws that were tied to the theocracy of Israel (e.g., eating shellfish).

1Cr 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

One should note that national customs furnish an explanation here. 1 Cor was addressed to a Greek audience, where long hair on men often indicated effeminacy and indulgences in unnatural vices.

This is where I ran into a problem. They say that verses 19-24 say that a man shouldn't go near a woman when she is on her period...
I am going to post verses 19-24 and you can tell me where you see that, because I don't see it. Perhaps that was just a mess up on Penn and Tellers part.

1Cr 11:19For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

1Cr 11:20 When ye come together therefore into one place, [this] is not to eat the Lord's supper.

1Cr 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before [other] his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

1Cr 11:22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise [you] not.

1Cr 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the [same] night in which he was betrayed took bread:

1Cr 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake [it], and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Will somebody let me know when they figure out what verse they meant?

This video dissapointed me. I usually like their show and often agree with them on many things. This would be an exception.
