Star Wars - Designing a Universe of Sound

Payback says...

I think one of the coolest things of my childhood was tapping one of the high-tension lines holding a telephone pole in place and discovering where he found the sound for the blasters.

Camera shutter speed matches helicopter`s rotor.

KrazyKat42 says...

Pole here. The British were hampered by the fact that they stole a code book and had all the day codes for several months. They never gave this info to the poles. They did it the hard way.

Also, reminder to self....when taking hostages in Vietnam, be sure to be on at least the 5th floor.

Nuclear Science Vs. Eminem

eric3579 says...

Look
If you had
One shot
Or one opportunity
To release all the energy you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you abuse it
Or use it for good?

They've armed the weapon
Countdown clock is set and
J. Robert Oppenheimer is sweatin'
Eyes are red and he's nervous
Cause on the surface this is armageddon
The shock bomb, but we're set upon and threatened
And with no sound the whole Alamogordo ground
Is glowing and cowed under one smouldering cloud
He's choked and wowed, everybody's open-mouthed
And over the ground the shock front blows, kapow!
Snap back to the alchemy
Hope before tragedy
Showed with bold math that we broke the whole atom
We choked; controlled action with poles of cold cadmium coat
To go capture neutrons and slow fracture
We broke, postponed that and we chose to go fashion
A most radioactive plutonium gadget then
Fat Man and Boy and Enola goes laughin'
As Nagasaki is blown and Hiroshima's blasted

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

Neutrons escaping from a source radiating
Merge and start atoms shaking; they begin
To unglue toward a decreased order
Entropic force distorts em
And supercharged with loads of protons they can only go farther
Cold war grows hotter--exothermal--Colorado to Joe Stalin
Coast to coast holes; silos but there's no farmer
Toe-to-toe drama
NATO and Warszawa in co-assured trauma
The globe groans everyone knows there's no calming
So show your foes and implode your core column
Quid pro quo Castle Bravo for Tsar Bomba
And move on and leave atolls exposed to gross doses of old fallout;
Slow-to-go toxins in shoals and so though we explode them no longer
Still the proof lives on in the blue lagoon water, father

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

When war games hit the stage of a gluon's rage
There's a military boot on the new doc's page
We were playing in the beginning, but grew up strange
Making radar and missiles, and new bombs blazed
And we kept grinding the lensed sights for the next sniper
Best believe son it'll pay to design fighters
All the gains of science analyzed by the
Man provide plans for sarin and cyanide
And our hands are blighted by crying
Eyes when dying lands are slammed if our grants expand the fire brighter
And there's no jury there's no sublime righter
This is our fight
And these minds are all ours so protect your pia mater
Try to feed and water good, seed trust, flee dishonour
Gotta be clean being Apollo stead of Vietnam and
Lay the armour down and be the one to stand up
And lead us on the trail of Spock
We'll elevate these motley progeny
To a future in a safer spot, an irrigated plot
Homicide a way forgot
Success is a lack of military options
Failure's not
Become a lover of a great and cosmic goal
We cannot condone these terror plots
So here we go it's our shot
Feel frail or not
This is the only world and humanity that we got

You gotta choose, yourself how to use it
The knowledge you hold and
Don't ever let a letter go
You only get one shot to stop
And one chance to know
Responsibility comes once you're a science guy, yo!

You gotta make your own mind up, man.

Comcast Repairmen Unconcerned Of Wrecks They Are Causing

Mordhaus says...

Not sure if they have it set up like they do elsewhere and the way other companies do it (like Time Warner/Spectrum did here in Austin), but most of these workers will likely be contractors and the only relation to Comcast they will have is the name on the trucks.

The modus operandi was, and maybe still is, issue an apology, fire the specific contractor, and hire another. When these people go to sue Comcast, their lawyers will tell them that the people were not directly employed by Comcast and therefore are culpable separately. Then you get into the whole hassle of trying to track down the contractor, who usually disappears and reappears under a different name.

I remember getting pissed at Time Warner (pre-sellout) because one of their people trespassed on my property and left my gates open. Fortunately my dogs didn't leave, but they could have. He had right of way to cross one gate because their pole is considered part of the 'easement' to the utility company's equipment. The second gate was padlocked and he cut it off because he didn't have a proper ladder to reach the pole, I assume. I called them and they first tried to BS me that the easement covered both gates, but I told them I had the surveyors confirm it didn't when I redid the fence the year before. Then they said that they weren't the direct employer and the guy was a contractor. I asked for info and they gave me his company name only after I complained to a supervisor. His company had a web page, but none of the numbers worked and the 'business address' is basically a knife sharpening shop in central Austin. Time Warner apologized when I called back, but the most they could do was give me a couple of free months service.

Online Fact Checking - more important than ever!

spawnflagger says...

I agree that facts should be checked, but for this particular story the facts lead to more questions. Was there ever a safety incident in the past with Christmas lights strung between poles? It mentions the law doesn't allow using the electricity, but does it explicitly forbid it? Why not put a weight limit and wattage limit rather than an outright ban? (LEDs have come a long way)
"technical reasons" should have technical merit.

Even if the ban was to stop offending others, they are a sovereign nation and can pass laws however they like. I wouldn't of shared the story (if I had facebook) just because it was obvious trolling.

Bladeless Wind Turbines

newtboy says...

I also thought it looked extremely unstable, and has way too much noncaptured motion to work long term. It looks like it would shake itself apart in under a week. I hope that is not how they intend the final version to operate, but the pole was already much larger than a similar size bladed turbine would need. Maybe good for direct to structure/ground mounted systems, but likely not for pole mounts without some serious redesign.

Bladeless Wind Turbines

EMPIRE says...

My thoughts exactly. That seemed VERY unstable. All that shaking is nothing but lost energy.

Maybe it was just a temporary pole, and it wasn't placed deep enough. Maybe.

Bladeless Wind Turbines

eric3579 says...

Interesting but seems gimmicky. Im no engineer but that pole shaking alone seems extremely problematic. How efficient comparatively to regular turbines, and long term ware on the equipment(all the shaking). Also can it size up. Be interesting to see if they are successful. Call me skeptical.
