Eye - Optical illusion that causes natural hallucination

islaywombats says...

We probably evolved this trait to help us see the world steadily while running. New studies are suggesting we used to hunt our prey by "persistence hunting," or just jogging after an animal until it falls over from heat exhaustion (most animals can't cool down and move at the same time).

When you're moving steadily for a long period of time, your brain starts to "edit out" the movement, so you can see everything around you clearly. When you stop, your brain is still compensating, thus the effect.

My guess, at least.

I like it when women who have curves say that women are supposed to have curves. It's just not true, we're supposed to be starving hungry animals running around ALL over the F'n place trying to persistently hunt down our food. I sincerely doubt there was ever a fat "cave person".

If you look at the old (stone age) stone figures for fertility they are all round so I guess they had rotund people back then too...

Because fertility gods are pregnant!

I recommend reading this study comparing a hunter gatherer society's energy expenditure to western society.

Also look at this meta study regarding energy expenditure and activity level and its relation to obesity.

Human Mammal, Human Hunter, art of persistence hunting

Cheetah attacks gazelle

Yogi says...

Cheetahs are the reason I like the theory of Persistence Hunting as a way humans evolved into what we are today. Cheetahs very fast but only in short bursts and then they get very tired because of the way their body works...like a piston pumping air in and out of their lungs, makes them tired and they can't regulate their breathing like a human can running on two feet without their body crushing their lungs.

Which means that if we wanted to...we could catch a cheetah eventually by tying it out over a very long distance.

Persistence Hunting

I also like how this is a real challenge for the hunter and the animal. Who can last longer. Not who has the gun.

I realise that this attitude is the basis for the video getting made at all, but I can't say I understand it. Living on a razor's edge between life and death, by highly trained skills, is an effect of evolutionary specialization, not sportsmanship.

Anyone whose survival depends on succeding at this "real challenge" would be offended, I think.

Or would the intense application of skill and effort make them happier, more fulfilled people?

Who is more fulfilled, a hunter-gatherer or a rocket scientist?
