Human terminal velocity is around 120mph when falling in breathable altitudes in a belly-down (flat) position. Pulling in your limbs will get you closer to 200mph, which is roughly what a peregrine falcon hits in its dive and in the ballpark of what a .30-06 round in freefall (ie, after being fired straight up) would reach. Professional speed skydivers fly head-down and reach 330mph. The higher you start, the lower air density and thus higher terminal velocity you get. Felix Baumgartner jumped from 128,000 feet and reached 840mph.

Now there's a video that would be funny. Have video of someone attaching a flux capacitor to a peregrine falcon and film it in a dive. Add some FX and *blam* fire trail in the sky. Watch the Peta people freak out =)

It might work best with a Peregrine Falcon as they are more prone to overcoming 88mph. Now to get a flux capacitor attached to it.

jesus effin christ, I was all "hey, this is pretty cool" already at the peregrine falcon bit, but jesus that goshawk is awe-inspiring.

You don't mess with a murder of crows, man. They're crazy, smart and mean. I've seen them chase bald eagles and peregrine falcons out of the sky, and every spring during mating season there's a particularly nasty one that dive-bombs people coming in and out of my building. They're called a murder for a reason.

I hear the Peregrine Falcon can do the Kessel run in 12 parsecs.

I'm not sure it is, since you linked to paragliding and hawks and that's not what this is about.

Regardless, I'm curious whether they had the bird follow the plane during the entire climb (tiring), or whether they threw the bird out of a moving aircraft (potentially terrifying).

Also, let's continue this trend with other animals. I nominate Octopuses.
