Magnolia opening scene (featuring One by Aimee Mann)

fissionchips says...

If I recall, the 'intro' opening sequence that precedes this clip is the narrator talking about a series of gee-whiz coincidences. They used it as a trailer, which was odd because I never thought that it fit very well with the rest of the movie. This clip seems like a much better place to start the screenplay. But hey, I'm no Paul Thomas Anderson .

I just checked out the website listed in the video: http://ptanderson.com/. You should have a look! If you do decide to take advantage of their offer, please send me some: I don't smoke, but think highly enough of PT Anderson that I'd like to support him if he really needs the cash that much.

I certainly do! If I had known this wasn't on here already I would have sifted it myself. Good stuff.

Top 5 Directors? (Cinema Talk Post)

therealblankman says...

I'm going to make my list more difficult (or maybe easier, depending on your point of view) by limiting myself to current, contemporary, living persons. This removes obvious picks like Kubrick, Welles, Kurosawa and Hitchcock who would otherwise be at the top. Here's my list, in no particular order:

1) The Coens - plural I know, but you can't have one without the other. These brothers have produced masterpieces in every genre they've attempted. Crime, drama, comedy, mobsters, whatever. Always entertaining and very deserving of their recent Oscar.
2) Paul Thomas Anderson. A not terribly prolific director, but a thoughtful one. One of the few whose movies you must attend in the theatre simply because HE made it!
3) Wes Anderson- You can count on Wes for taking you to a place you've never been before, and no matter how fucked up your family may seem to you, the families portrayed in a Wes Anderson film are more disturbed and dysfunctional. Not to say that they're not loving and well-intentioned, just misguided.
4) Clint Eastwood- He has become a master of his craft. Few others will take the time to luxuriate in a scene like Eastwood. His long cuts and deliberate pacing show a respect for the intelligence and attention span of his audience.
5) Martin Scorsese- of all the great Directors born in the new Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1970s, only Scorsese remains at the top of his game. Others such as Spielberg, Lucas (ugh), Coppola, Friedkin etcetera have left their best work in the distant past.

Firstly I'm also a Jon Brion fan. From what I've seen from movie clips it seems like this movie will be very dark, and not particulary suited for Brion's style of music. I don't think he'd be slighted or hurt by letting someone else do the score. He's got enough talent and projects to keep him busy for quite some time. Not to mention that he's been recording a new solo album at Abbey Road!

In reply to this comment by dystopianfuturetoday:
Really!?! I have kind of mixed emotions about that, because Jon Brion has done some brilliant work in PTA's previous films, yet I love Radiohead and JG. I wonder what happened? First Jon Brion gets his version of Fiona Apple's album (unfairly and wrongly) dumped, and now this.

In reply to this comment by guessandcheck:
...not to mention jonny greenwood from radiohead did the score!

From the movie "Pleasentville". This video was also directed by Apple's then-boyfrien Paul Thomas Anderson. Also check out the cameo of John C. Reilly at the end of the video stealing records out of the juke-box.

This has to be one of my favorite Beatles covers. Apple nails this one. Also, the tags should be changed from just John Lennon to The Beatles as this was a Beatles song and not a solo Lennon song...even though Lennon wrote and preformed it by himself on "Let it Be", it's still a Beatles song.

famous tracking shot from "i am cuba" (1964) takes us from a hotel rooftop to underwater in the pool below

plastiquemonkey says...

music: "i can't keep from crying sometimes", by the deidre wilson tabac. the music was added later ("synchronized/rescored" by someone on youtube). in the original, the sound changes when the camera goes underwater.

"i am cuba" was a cuban/soviet production finally released by martin scorcese in 1995.

this shot was copied carefully by paul thomas anderson in the pool party scene in "boogie nights".
