Justin Trudeau explains marijuana legalization to a mother.

iaui says...

Nahh, there's no pandering, and barely any condescension from him. There's a huge amount of condescension from her and he shows remarkable restraint even while becoming a bit frustrated.

She shows positively @bobknight33-levels of inability to see another's viewpoint and unwillingness to debate honestly.

That he remains mostly unfazed by it is one of the reasons this video (and man) is great.

How did he pander? He basically told this voter to shut the fuck up, she and all her people are dumb, and we need to address this issue with small-government approach rather than Mother-Government-Knows-Best.

I don't know, he was very Conservative-minded here. I guess you disagree why?

Women as Rewards - Tropes regarding women in video games

ChaosEngine says...

You're right about the industry. It's still largely made up of young males.

However, you're completely wrong about the market. It's not the 80s anymore, the average gamer is in their 30s, has a house, a job, a spouse, etc. An increasing number have kids and a significant percentage are women.

Unfortunately, there is a very vocal minority of young, stupid (mostly) males who believe the world revolves around them and the second a game is made that doesn't exclusively pander to their whims, they lost their tiny minds.

Barbar said:

Juvenile market will be catered to by juvenile products. The video definitely dragged on. I think a lot of this gets traced back to the industry for a long time being nearly entirely male, and the market very nearly the same. And young. And escapist. The market has changed, and to some extent the game makers, but there's a long way still to go. It's a reflection of society more than a separately addressable problem though, imo.

Who Are the Racists: Conservatives or Liberals?

enoch says...

holy shit..one massive straw man.
let us peruse the buffet and only pick the tasty bits so we can better make our point.

christ this was dumb, all to prove what exactly?
conservatives are less racist than liberals? really? that is an actual point?

well fuck me in the face with a chain saw i love me some condescending pandering with my wheaties.

how about this?
a racist can be conservative OR liberal!

it amazes me how many people are so gleefully unaware of their own predjudices.

oh fuck that douchenozzle.

Key & Peele - Negrotown

lantern53 says...

these guys usually do race-neutral comedy but this one panders to black fears a bit, too bad

Apparently Negrotown is not a happy place, but actually the county jail. If those guys go there, they'll find a lot of black people who have nothing in common with them, in other words, poor, black, uneducated, criminal. Also will be some nasty white folks who have made a whole mess of their lives with drugs and bad choices, same as the others.

How To Sound Smart By Giving a TED Talk About Nothing

lucky760 says...

I'm going to write a comment about the video I just watched. It's going to attempt to be witty and perhaps absurd that includes a joke with a punchline intended to be a misdirect. I'll consider something that gets my point across, but is generally neutral and not too inflammatory so as not to rile up people who may have a strong opposing opinion, while still attempting to pander to and entertain those who agree strongly with my school of thought.

I'd like to come up with a great play on words that will catch everyone's attention, preferably something short and memorable, but the fact that the comment has already gone on this long is going to result in all my aspirations for it falling flat.

I'd like to conclude by executing an *invocation, but I know I'll get distracted and submit before I include it, and of course you can't invoke when editing, so I'll just leave the post un-invoked then re-read and re-re-read it and edit again and again trying to improve upon it and hoping I don't come across as a total dipshit, but knowing absolutely that's exactly how I'm coming across.

2nd Grade Homework Teaches Indoctrination

enoch says...

@newtboy
now we are getting somewhere.

let us look at your first paragraph.notice anything?
ideology vs reality.
what you are proposing is the initial intent and ideologically i totally agree but even in your paragraph you concede to the truth, albeit a cynical truth.
(the referencing of the necessity if an informed public).which is only one aspect of a much greater whole which should be criticized and addressed.

understand i am not disagreeing with your assessments of the original intent.what i am pointing out is that what we have now is no where near a reflection of that intent,to which i have added that each right, privilege and dignity has had to be fought for and extracted FROM the government.

the government is "supposed" to represent the people.
it is "supposed" to protect and secure our rights.
but is that what we see play out?
i certainly dont think so.

the case is not exactly hard to make that the federal government no longer serves nor represents the will of the people but rather large corporate and monied interests.

though i will concede that revisionist text books can fascilitate indoctrination.

i am also not trying to make the argument this video is some political masterpiece of criticism.
it is a pandering,condescending,simple-minded piece of work BUT it is the criticism i admire.

i could go on for days on the failures of the public education system and it has very little to do with the teachers but rather the delivery system itself, which has become a machine which comodifies people into class categories.

henry giroux called it punishment creep.

school is not longer about education but rather about learning to obey.

quick story before i totally go off the rails and write you all a book:
i was subbing a history class for a friend and decided to teach shay's rebellion, since he was just completing america's war for independence and the rebellion is vital to understand the debate over federal powers.my friend was delighted with the idea but the administration was, less than enthusiastic.

the next day i was handed my third disciplinary notice and reprimanded for not following curriculum.which was bullshit because i was never given specific curriculum.

they wanted a babysitter...not a teacher.

i have not had a teaching gig since, because i didnt learn the lesson they are drilling into those kids brains.....obey.

sit down.
shut up.
and do what you are told.

do you truly think obedience should be the primary lesson learned at school?

Real Time with Bill Maher: Generation Ass

MilkmanDan says...

Hmmm. Wasn't Maher one of the people piling on John McCain in 2008, when *he* was 72?

To be fair, that was mostly because McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate, which would have put her 1 step away from the White House if anything happened to him. But still, a big deal was made of his age at the time ... so you can't exactly claim that this is some new wave of ageism.

I'd personally be fine with a 72+ year old president... But on the other hand, the parties are going to swing for whoever they think is the most electable, and since a disturbing proportion of people just vote for whoever they think looks the best, they kinda have to pander to that demographic a bit. And that's going to put some pressure on the "old and wise" in favor of the "young and good looking", whether we agree with it or not.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

dannym3141 says...

Harassment is a bad thing, but I feel very sorry for anyone that does not engage in general pleasantness, and finds phrases like "how are you?" and "nice day!" to be a form of harassment. Worst still, to chastise and publicly present them as harassers on youtube .. what sort of lowlife do you have to be to do that? I don't care how many actual harassers you caught, that is not an acceptable method so put the net away and get the fishing rod out.

I say things like hello, nice day.. And if i'm in a queue and i think of something to say that i think someone might find funny or help someone out, i'll say it. I don't expect a reply, but if there's a fun person around then it might pass the time better. I asked someone of the female persuasion at my pool the other week if they were looking for the sauna (slightly hidden away) because i heard her talking to what i assume was her husband about the sauna. I do that for old men, old ladies, fat blokes, skinny women; all sorts.. i offer men and women help out of the jacuzzi if they need it. Her reaction was to say "No..... WHY?" very pointedly.

Well you know what? Fuck her - i did something nice and now she's the one that's being rude to others. I cannot fucking stand the high and mighty attitude of these people, as though they have never been guilty of accidentally doing something other people didn't want them to do. As though they have an inbuilt capability to read the motive of other people. Obviously i offered to explain the location of the sauna because i wanted to have sex with her in it (yeah, sex in a disgusting public sweat box & burnt genitals, my favourite), god forbid someone actually be nice to someone else. I felt like being rude back, but that'd make me worse than her.

There is a very fine line between being an activist against harassment, and being an unhinged arsehole who goes around over reacting and getting the wrong end of the stick and hurting people who were showing genuine honesty. I'm so sorry if you've been harassed in the past, but you don't see victims of domestic abuse blaming everyone that looks/talks at them funny in the street for all the pain they've suffered - which is substantially more painful and personality-warping than the average activist blogger jumping on the "trigger-warning" bangwagon.

Harassment exists and this blanket of "harassment" that these videos engender for all sorts of shit is distracting us from that issue, and to some degree turning people against the issue..... I mean, if i get unfairly treated like a scumbag for years by "mostly" women who assume i'm harassing them, do i get license to make videos about it and complain about women as a whole, judging every action of every woman to be one of harassment because of my own insecurities? That's why these kind of videos are so poorly received @EMPIRE.. the majority of the content is the videographer sneering at people for being pleasant and exchanging niceties, why should people laud that kind of behaviour? I expect that behaviour to be discouraged by women as well and i'd forgive them for taking more notice of the fewer examples of harassment than i did, because opinions are a bit selfish by nature.

And i didn't even question the validity of the supporting cast..... I'm sure Rob Bliss (OF ROB BLISS CREATIVE DOT COM EVERYBODY FAVOURITE AND LIKE PLS) would have no desire to help make this video more interesting! I quote his own philosophy here from his website, he believes in "giving people the content that they want." Interestingly worded remit... Why does no one ever question the source if it's a "reality" video? The guy practically states in his "approach" section that he aims to pander to people, he doesn't want to challenge viewer opinion...

Walloftext, sorry, but i don't like the sentiment of this video, and i will not let people in the comments tell me that i am a bad person for doing so - these are my reasons.

Parade of Progressive Causes at the People's Climate March

Stormsinger says...

Here's a serious question for you all, although not precisely related to this video.

How long do we have to wait before the proper response to climate-change deniers is ridicule? There hasn't been any actual scientific controversy for over a decade...how many decades do we have to pander to them before we can treat them exactly the same as flat-earthers and moon-landing-hoaxers?

3D Recreation Of Moon Landing Shows It Wasn't A Hoax

Stormsinger says...

It's not necessary...not in any way. At best, it's just an excuse to play with a new toy (and why would anyone need an excuse?), at worst, it's pandering to the conspiracy nuts by suggesting that their insanity is valid enough to need disproving. It's not like this will convince a single believer to change their mind.

Ultra-Pure Water Tastes Like Nothing And Can Kill You

Sylvester_Ink says...

Once upon a time, National Geographic was serious, educational, and interesting. Now they find the need to be all "EXTREME" with people like this guy pandering to the audience, because clearly the general public is too stupid and has too short an attention span to actually listen to the stuff.

And yet, somehow we can tolerate David Attenborough's completely dry and boringly British delivery.

[EDIT]Oh, and remember the old theme song? Now THAT was a theme song!
