I shot some sun rays breaking through the early morning mist over the mountains around Machu Picchu. It was gorgeous - dream lighting - and about an hour later realized that the camera was set to a ludicrously high ISO. I was devastated. I can't imagine how that guy would have felt if something had gone wrong.

I shot a few hours of a galaxy through the telescope the other day with the ISO set on AUTO. Also a bummer but nothing compared to your story.

I have Dental coverage at work. I pay about $60 a month and that covers all dental for my family of four. Some extreme things have an extra cost but $150 for a crown is nothing compared to New Zealand.

Raising the age is fine if it is means tested.

Poorer people don't live as long. Poorer people tend to work at jobs that are much harder on their bodies. Adding years to when they are eligible to collect social security isn't right.

Can you imagine being a janitor at age 68? Dang.

I also agree that capitalism is the problem with our discourse. It's not just the selling of hate, it is also the selling of fear and sex and cute kitten videos. When a news room has to make a profit, they are offering stories that pander to the lowest common denominator. Reagan's Iran contra mess, while well covered, was nothing compared to the coverage of Clinton and the stained dress and the cigar. Because sex sells.

I actually agreed with BillO on a few issues. I think raising the social security age and cutting rich people off from social security benefits is a reasonable idea. I also agree that people are being hired to spread hate... mainly by the FOX news network. He also admits Iraq was a bad idea/disaster.
Bill doesn't seem that extreme when compared to the Glenn Becks and Alex Jones of the world.

I'm skeptical of this too, a transcript only, it all depends on how he said it, this could easily be just a little joke he did. But then again, the way Romney talks it can be a little hard to know if he's joking. I'm not trying to make fun of his stupid ideas or religion, I'm saying he's the kind of speaker that can do a joke and nobody in the room understood that a joke was just done.

I thought Buffalo were the most dangerous. Natives call them "Black Death". But yeah. Hippos are scary. They can actually run faster than a human, they weigh more than a couple of small cars and their skin is 2 inches thick. Oh, and they can snap bones like twigs with their jaws.

You're partially right in that climate change is about politics and money, but just not in the way you think.

Let's look at the two sides:

On one hand you have the majority of the worlds climate scientists. Now I don't know if you've ever met a climate scientist, but I can assure you they are not living on private islands and driving Ferraris. There really isn't any kind of profit motive for them to say that climate change is real. Other than the "grant money" which the right keeps harping on about. Are you kidding? In real terms, it's fuck all, and certainly nothing compared to what they could be getting if they were to shill for the anti-agw crowd.

Now on the other, you have the oil industry, various large manufacturers and so on. There is an enormous profit motive for them to deny climate change, but they know they can't fight the science, so they manufacture doubt. Hell they even set up a team to analyse all the data and it still came back in favour of climate change.

No-one wants AGW to be real. It is a massive pain in the ass for the entire world. Unfortunately, it is real, it sucks and now we have to deal with it.
