Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Infrastructure (HBO)

kceaton1 says...

One big issue is that we are throwing our tax money away, thanks to all of our collective Legislative branches (which is what makes me laugh when anyone says that Obama is the biggest problem to this country; they apparently have yet to really look at all of the concerns that are listed due to each branch of the government). I can't believe how much new infrastructure has been built in my own area, BUT they are not doing anything about exceptionally old infrastructure issues (though I do believe Utah does a better job than other states; but just *barely* so).

But, it is also true that our taxes are "getting a break"; but an extended problem is that with all of this inflation we have not gotten raises to keep up with these changes. Plus various other issues (with costs for so many things getting out of control)...

This is an endemic issue, caused by many things. But there are multi-secondary issues that are contributing to this as well (like house costs, college cost--we are supposed to have a shortfall of 90,000 doctors in the future, I bet you can imagine what is causing that--and so many cost related issues); which is why the public is SO unwilling to pay a bit more for this.

Because our government misuses the money so badly already, we are so far in debt (oh but, that, is somehow all the President's fault; as though the President is the equivalent of the Christian God, but in a government sense...), and many other stupid issues akin to these.

Instant Karma

sillma says...

Oh yes, I fully agree with you there, no need to escalate the situation as far as they let it go, and indeed impossible to tell what started the whole debacle in the first place.

My guess is bit of unjustified holier than thou attitude, which seems to be the curse of the current day and age, from the unimpaired audience. There's no justification for belligerent drunken behaviour, but neither is there for not doing anything about it until it is too late when there seems to be time and chance to de-escalate the situation by more peaceful means.

But, alas, it's all just guesses with the information available.

Magicpants said:

There's a serious lack of information on both sides. I don't believe in damning someone until I know all the facts, and I think the situation as presented by the vloggers is disingenuous because they present the attack as being unprovoked, when it looks like it has something to do with a man being unwilling filmed. Yes, violence is wrong, but it looks like the attackee had a chance to deescalate the situation and instead choose to "poke the bear".

Walrus Flash Mob & 20 Years of Pot Research

dannym3141 says...

I respect anyone's choice to do or not do anything they choose. I thought the same way about it until I started to wonder if I wanted to go to my grave not knowing what it felt like out of some stubborn desire to win an imaginary "drug free" sticker at the moment of my death.

I saw some people who smoked it and were a) not addicted or changed by the act and b) functioned excellently and contributed greatly to society (in the form of music and literature and art). So I tried it, and I'd say it taught me a way to cope with my brain and how it works, so I can fight long term depression.

I'm sorry that he didn't stress that there are absolutely no causal links established either between psychosis or education. I still strongly believe that there will be a link between psychosis or mental illness and the willingness or desire to try it - which in turn would give them medicinal relief and in effect they end up unwittingly self medicating. We know it has medicinal qualities as did our ancestors. I think that the link between poverty and social elements greatly affect the uptake rate, having grown up both in council estate (very poor) areas and middle class areas between parents I can vouch for that disparity personally.

I think it's an obvious logical conclusion, and all I need is evidence to disprove it. Until then I certainly will not apologise for using something that has been of the earth for millions of years over something mixed and concocted by pharmaceutical companies that have documented side effects, overdose risk, and actual addiction.

Loud Mouth Dummy Making Trouble For Himself

oohlalasassoon says...

So the overgrown hall monitor with a camera stands on a corner filming the general public, waiting for someone to fuck up so he can put them on the 5 o'clock news. He's a catalyst for the response that he got from the idiotic biker. Some folks don't like being filmed without their consent and the camera guy -knows- that. He and his type are the cause of many of the escalated and inflamed freak-outs he captures on camera. Respectfully, you and I have different definitions of not DOING anything.

Shepppard said:

How many people doing something stupid did you actually see filmed by the reporter?

Short answer: one.

Yeah, we had the dingus stop in the middle of traffic, but the biker was just as anonymous as everyone else until that helmet came off. Everybody in their car, dumbass move or not, was completely anonymous.

The reporter isn't reporting anybody to the cops, and the only reason that the biker actually got any form of punishment is literally because he decided to confront the reporter, and that caught the attention of the gate security guards.

Seriously, it doesn't matter what you think the reporter did wrong.. in the end, he didn't actually DO anything. He literally stood there and filmed idiots. We see this on youtube 10000x a day, and think nothing of it, he just happened to get paid for doing it.

Bilderberg Member "Double-Speaks" to Protestors

Trancecoach says...

This is just a distraction. Obviously the attendees at Bilderberg are not doing anything about "climate change" one way or the other.

(The Roman Republic also had Tribunes of "the People" who could veto laws. It made no difference at all to the lifestyle and activities of the Patricians, Senators, and military men of the Republic. If you -- who clearly has no influence over what the state does or doesn't do -- think that you "are the government," then I have little interest in trying to "cure" you of that delusion (unless you're a paying client of mine). And, by some definitions -- that ultimately make no practical difference -- you "are" the government, then I have every confidence that you can and will "deal with these issues" yourself to your satisfaction. And I wish you the best of luck!)

Why Trust Is Worth It - zefrank

ChaosEngine says...

There are varying levels of trust. I trust the drivers around me to not do anything too stupid. I trust that the money I earn will buy me food and clothing (and beer!).

More importantly, I trust the people I go snowboarding with that they'll dig me out of an avalanche, and the people I train with in Aikido that they can receive a technique safely and the senseis who demonstrate a technique on me that they won't do any permanent damage.

Most importantly, I trust my wife.... with everything.

Cops using unexpected level of force to arrest girl

JiggaJonson says...

I've seen excessive force, this wasn't anything crazy. What do you expect arresting someone who's resisting arrest to look like?

The police even politely explained afterward to the curious public, something they didn't have to do.

In truth, police turn into shitbag assholes because of people posting videos like this making it seem like they're bad guys when really they're not doing anything wrong. I'd have a bad attitude too if someone was heckling me for my entire career.

CryptoLocker Virus Explained - Scary Stuff

VoodooV says...

depending on how much data you have, this actually should be relatively easy to spot/stop.

It takes a while to encrypt a lot of data. With so many people using torrenting more and more to download large video files. Its going to take a long time for it to encrypt all of that. Now yeah, if you just have a bunch of spreadsheets and word documents in your my docs folder, yeah you're probably fucked. But IMO, you shouldn't keep small docs like that on your computer, you keep them on a flash drive not always connected to your computer. Just following with the idea that nothing critically important should be connected 24/7 to the internet anyway.

If you see your hard drive active non-stop even when you're not doing anything, that's your first clue something is amiss.

The UN Caused a Cholera Epidemic in Haiti

longde says...

When responsible people screw up, they make things right. Else, they really should not do anything in the first place. The UN and NGOs really have done more harm than good to Haiti and many have used the facade of doing good to enrich themselves: *related=http://videosift.com/video/How-did-the-Red-Cross-Spend-in-Haiti

bcglorf said:

I'm of two minds on this. Yeah, UN member nations screwed up. On the other hand, screwups can only be stopped with certainty if you opt to stop doing anything. So my other mind sees this and thinks, no good deed goes unpunished.

Ron Paul "When...TRUTH Becomes Treasonous!"

Most people just don't get it...there attitude is "I'm not doing anything wrong so why should I care?".

I don't understand!?? What the hell, America. You WANT to give up your freedom? You want the government to step on the constitution? I'm just baffled.

chris hayes-jeremy scahill-the bush/obama relationship

enoch says...

@VoodooV
hmmmm.../taps fingers.
i dont think we are making any progress.
mainly because i dont know if you are directing your commentary towards me or the video itself.

understand i am not trying to impose my opinion on you as sacrosanct.
that is not my intent.
but i also think glossing over these events with generalities that we both are aware of serves nothing for the discussion.

i teach history and governments.

i am also highly distrustful of governments or to be more accurate:power/authority.

so lets change this up a bit.
let me ask you on how YOU perceive the current state of affairs.

1.do you feel,as some other people do,that this data dragnet by the NSA is a fake scandal? that is just hyped partisan politics and the government is only doing what is always has done?
and if so.why?

2.in regards to the estimated 125 million correspondence confiscated, along with the AP reporters emails and phone records.do you feel the US government is justified is mining such information? that the "war on terror" knows no boundaries and the government must be forever vigilant in collecting such information.

3.if you agree that the US government has the right to spy on its citizens then how do you feel about the fourth amendment and how it pertains to "reasonable search and seizure"? would this not be in direct conflict with that amendment and is dealing with its own citizens as 'suspicious"?

4.do you agree with the governments counter-argument that a.what they are doing is legal and b.if your not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about.

i understand you are trying to give a more even-handed and more reasonable perspective concerning this but i truly want to understand how a differing opinion views all this.
my goal is to understand.

because i have been watching this unfold and the more that comes out the more it chills my blood.
historically these things always go in a particular direction and it is not pretty.
power wishes only to retain its power.

Is California Becoming A Police State?

shatterdrose says...

If a cop knocks on my door and says he wants to ask me a few questions, I say "Sure, what's up? What can I help you with?"

Because here's the really odd part . . . If I'm not doing anything wrong, he's going to leave. Why? BECAUSE IT'S NOT A POLICE STATE. *ahem* But yes, any normal, sane person doesn't freak out the moment an officer approaches them. Who typically freaks out? People that are guilty or crazy. I've had officers knock on my door before, and I didn't pull out the camera and start threatening to kill them.

But, on the other hand, I've had officers pull me over for no just cause and my first question to them is "Why did you pull me over." If they don't answer, I tell them point blank that unless they have probable cause I don't accept this as legitimate.

If an officer shows up to a potential domestic abuse, quite frankly, I would expect nothing less than what these officers did. Too many women have died because the officers couldn't intervene in domestic affairs. Under a Republican, mind you Bob. As long as the man said nothing was wrong, that was the end of the story.

So what if someone was critically injured, or near dead, or the child would be severely beaten if the woman didn't tell the officers she was okay? Then what? You'd be crying about how incompetent they are.

You're seeing what you want to see, simple as that. For those of us who are rational, we'll wait until there's more information before jumping on the screaming and moaning bandwagon.

So I can just anonymously call up and say "I hear a fight going on in Ickster's house I think someone may be hurt" and the cops will come to your house and you just let them in?

That's not the world I want to live in.

Greetings, sir. I bring you an update on a partial bugfix... on promoting discarded vids to bring them back.

I tried it on this one when the bug was that siftbot would eat the power point but not do anything, and now @chingalera has promoted it... and... well.. it has almost worked. It has indeed gone to the promoted box, but still says "discarded" on the vid, and appears in @Stingray's discarded instead of unsifted queues.... which I checked in case it was a caching issue.

He's not doing anything dangerous or putting anyone at risk. He's operating the aircraft within it's designed limitations. An engine failure would cause the props to auto feather which would remove the breaking effect, and the aircraft could go about flying normally.

GeeSussFreeK said:

He is placing himself in the situation that any minor, non-catastrophic failure would most likely result in the loss of the aircraft. I am fine with that, just as long as he isn't doing over other peoples houses. Good airmanship is more than being able to handle dangerous things, it is not putting yourself in them. But that is coming from someone who is terrified of flying, so take it for what it is worth
