Orcas Vs Shark: Killer Whales Take Down Tiger Shark

chicchorea says...

...you obviously feel quite strongly about an issue.

However, it is a nonissue here.

Ad hom attacks are unaccetable in the Sift and are actionable in the vein of which you have experienced albeit unreservedly so.

r_m was merely enjoying themselves as you somewhat inferred, may it be you do likewise.

Respective to the excising of the fins, this was my thinking as well with uncertainty as to the intent.

SquidCap said:

Total bullcrap, this is one of the reason sharks are being poached increasingly. Just as we started to come down on those numbers, idiots like you give the poachers a new reason. If this was attempt at sarcasm, know that there is a sarcasm button for it. Dumbass...

Orcas are very intelligent, fin removal is definitely deliberate.

Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women

peggedbea says...

as far glass ceilings and sexism being a nonissue in western society, @blankfist ...... and others for that matter.

i lived in so cal for a while, but i never worked there... so maybe you do live in a mecca of enlightment or some bullshit... but...

have you ever been threatened and written up for telling your boss you weren't going to press charges, but you also weren't going to work 12 hour long graveyard shifts alone with the dude who pins you to the wall and tells how he likes to be touched and constantly tries to fuck you in between patients?? have you ever found out that your male coworkers were given raises because they "had families to support" ??? have you ever been written up for not attending a meeting due to child care issues and then found out 2 of your male coworkers were exempt from attending any meetings ever because they watch their kids during daytime hours??? ever been patted on the head like a dog when you figured out how to fix a technical malfunction that your opposite gendered coworkers couldnt?? ever been treated like some kind of freakish savant when the dudes you work with figured out you were really intelligent??? ever find out that all of your female friends have been victims of rape, molestation or incest??? ever had a "friend" give you some "tylenol" at a concert and wake up 3 days later?? ever see television reports about the outrageous number of teen fathers, or are they all about teenage mothers?? ever hear derogatory remarks about "welfare fathers", or is it all about "welfare moms"?? ever have people assume that you must be a poor, slutty, uneducated, night shift denny's waitress because you're divorced???

sexism is alive and well, it might look differently than you imagine it, it may not effect your bubble of existance, and it's probably more likely the result of 6000 years of systematic female subordination and oppression than advertising executives with boners for hot skinny models. but it's real and pervasive and it exists.

Rand Paul Flip Flops on Civil Rights Act, Blames Media

longde says...

I guess it goes to the type of society you want to have.

I don't like the idea of banks, HMOs, real estate agents, home owners associations, and other private sector entities being able to create an apartheid society via exclusion of certain racial and ethnic groups.

What you say sounds somewhat good on paper, but where has it actually worked in real life? America has been down that road before; I for one, don't want to go back.>> ^blankfist:

Wow, we must be getting close to election time again, because the anti-popular-Republican smears are out in full force. Go partisanship!
I believe people should have the right to discriminate in the private sector. Why not? Isn't that part of freedom? I don't personally condone racism, but I wouldn't want to police it either.
People can be racist and discriminatory all they want as long as they don't inflict violence on someone. That's the point about that old-timey racism I think some of you are leaving out; the part where people were killed and made into slaves because of their skin color. There's a huge distinction between that and some bigot with a small business.
To me, this is a nonissue. And for the record I don't support Rand Paul.

I thought this being discarded, would be a nonissue (its been discarded for days)
Videoxx2's does not belong here I agree, I remember posting personnel detail like that is not accepted on the sift...

Marine Gunrock, I did not post this for any other reason that it made the news and was franking, fucking disturbing, if not a fake...then wtf does this show? I put it here to ask other people what they always thought of it.

It the end it turned out to be on the sift talk and so was discarded, I thought that was fair, the other was posted hours before mine, and though nothing else of this video...

Not too surprising that someone who wants to keep the power to squash a videos rank also wants the power to squash a discussion...even if it means conjuring up non-existent invocations.

Ummm, what? I'm not even sure where you were going with that, but if it had anything to do with the *unquality - Maybe you didn't notice that I wasn't the first to say it.

Um, let's not get too dramatic.(!)

>> ^Grimm:
So far many of you have explained why you "think" you need the option to down vote a video. But no one has given a good reason for why a down vote should nullify an up vote. If a video gets 25 votes then it should show that the video got 25 votes. If we have to have down votes then it should just show that it got 5 down votes.
It is misleading to say that the video only has 20 votes when in fact it has 25.

I've concluded ages ago that downvote serves a couple of primary purposes:
1. increasing the effective queue escape level (why the negatives end up nullifying the ups is answered here)
2. the quality control which has been beaten do death in discussion above, but to be complete I cite it here.

Hope that helps

Totalitarianism In America: Vaccinate or Go To Jail

MycroftHomlz says...

I fervently disagree with you. I have asserted that "the article is based on the argument that thiomersal is bad for you" or more specifically that it causes autism or neurological disorders.

"a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines -- thimerosal -- appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children."

I assert that thimerosal is main topic of this article(Published Jun 2005).

I never said that article was based on Wakefield's work.

I said, 'I believe' and 'I think' the article is based on Wakefield's work, there is a difference. And I still think that this could be true. It is the only article I could find on PubMed and ISI that discussed links between autism and thimerosal.

There are a couple other peer reviewed papers, which showed inconclusive results, but this is the main one and it is the most frequently cited. Wakefield is one of the only scientist who has published data that says this is true. A myriad of other work, most conclusively done by that Danish researcher I cited earlier, say that there is no evidence to link the two.

Without any other research to base their facts on, the most likely source in my opinion is Wakefield's paper from 1998. If this is the case, then the claims made the paper are not as strong as they would be otherwise because,

"In 2004, 10 of the 13 authors of the original Wakefield study retracted the paper's "interpretation", or conclusion, section, which had claimed: "Interpretation. We identified associated gastrointestinal disease and developmental regression in a group of previously normal children, which was generally associated in time with possible environmental triggers." The retraction of this claim stated that the data were insufficient to establish a causal link between MMR vaccine and autism.[8] Wakefield was later found to have received £435,000 in fees from trial lawyers attempting to show the vaccine was dangerous [9] [10]. Also in 2004, the United States' Institute of Medicine reported that evidence "favors rejection" of any link between vaccines containing thimerosal, or MMR, and the development of autism [11]."

The most important comment I think I have made is that this is A NONISSUE BECAUSE MOST IF NOT ALL VACCINES CAN BE OBTAINED WITHOUT THIMEROSAL.

Modify Post Details: Require Poster's Approval? (Sift Talk Post)

MycroftHomlz says...

I think a probabtionary change is a good idea.

I also talking to some extent about deadpool fixes as well, or any changes made to video not made by the original poster.(The deadpool thing may be a nonissue, I don't know)

On my first dead pool fix, I was pretty worried that the video was different. I spent an hour trying to verify that Bill Maher's shirt was the same. Maybe, I broke some rule there, but I didn't know at the time. I guess what I am saying is;

If the original poster had the ability to verify and approve a change, then that shifts the onus from the person that made the change onto the person who posted the video.

To me that seems only logical. If it is a matter of memory and or time required to program, then that is another matter.
