Reminds me of a bit about Lyndon Johnson in Hunter Thompson's 'Better than Sex'

'Lyndon was running about 10 points behind, with only nine days to go... He was sunk in despair. He was desperate... he called his equally depressed campaign manager and instructed him to call a press conference at two or two-thirty ( just after lunch on a slow news day) and accuse his high-riding opponent (the pig farmer) of having routine carnal knowledge of his barnyard sows, despite the pleas of his wife and children... His campaign manager was shocked. 'We can't say that, Lyndon,' he said. 'It's not true.' 'Of course it's not,' Johnson barked at him, 'but let's make the bastard deny it.'

Undoubtedly, the right wing cogs will regard this as a glowing success: Trump pushed the president into submission. Trump > Obama! Yay!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Nevada

Nevada law requires that registered brothel prostitutes be checked weekly for several sexually transmitted diseases, and monthly for HIV; furthermore, condoms are mandatory for all oral sex and sexual intercourse. Brothel owners may be held liable if customers become infected with HIV after a prostitute has tested positive for the virus.[7] Women work a legally mandated minimum of nine days for each work period.[8]

Since 1986, when mandatory testing began, not a single brothel prostitute has ever tested positive for HIV. The mandatory condom law was passed in 1988. A study conducted in 1995 in two brothels found that condom use in the brothels was consistent and sexually transmitted diseases were accordingly absent. The study also found that few of the prostitutes used condoms in their private lives.[10]

Second victim pulled from Colfax big rig wreckage
By Jenna Nielsen, Journal Staff Writer
The body of a co-driver was extricated this morning by Cal Fire crews at the scene of Monday's big rig rollover crash near Colfax.
The body of a second man was found underneath debris Tuesday morning at the accident site of a big rig rollover near Colfax Monday, officials reported.
The man, whose name is not being released pending notification of his family, was reportedly a passenger in the big rig, which rolled into a guard rail spilling its load of recylced plastic down the embankment near the Magra Road exit on westbound Interstate 80, California Highway Patrol offi-cials reported.
The driver, who was trapped inside of the truck’s cab and was also killed in the accident, was re-portedly going 70 mph and passing another truck in the fast lane when he lost control and slid down an embankment, said CHP Officer Rich Ruiz.
“This morning, as the investigator was going over log books, (it was) determined there was possi-bly a co-driver involved,” Ruiz said.
Ruiz said investigators also have video footage of the accident, recorded by a device on a Wal-Mart truck, which the driver of the big rig was passing at the time of the accident.
“The driver of the WalMart truck was doing 55 mph, so we estimate the driver (of the big rig) was going 70 mph when he approached a curve and lost control. You see in the video the trailer starts to fishtail. When the driver tries to correct, he is sent over the guardrail.”
Battalion Chief Jeff Brand of Cal Fire said crews located the co-driver under the debris and extri-cated him this morning.
Brand said when the truck was overturned, the cab was torn off and wedged beneath the contents of the trailer and the trailer itself.
All westbound lanes were closed as a result of the accident, which occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. All lanes were opened by approximately 7:45 p.m., California Highway Patrol officials said.
Ruiz said the driver of big rig had only had his license for nine days.

2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

eric3579 says...

Below is a couple paragraphs about Christopher Booker, taken from an article titled "The patron saint of charlatans is again spreading dangerous misinformation".

For several years he has been waging a similar war against "warmist alarmists", by which he means climate scientists. Nine days ago, for instance, he attacked Michael Mann for publishing a paper that shows (alongside scores of other studies) that global temperatures do indeed follow the famous hockey-stick pattern: a moderate long-term cooling trend terminating in a sudden upward bend. Mann, Booker told his readers, had been "selective ... in his new data, excluding anything which confirmed the Medieval Warming". But Mann's paper, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, uses every uncluttered high-resolution proxy temperature record in the public domain. How did Booker trip up so badly? By using the claims of unqualified bloggers to refute peer-reviewed studies.

Under their guidance he routinely mistakes weather for climate and makes claims about the temperature record that bear no relation to the studies he cites. My favourite Booker column is the piece he wrote in February, titled "So it appears that Arctic ice isn't vanishing after all". In September 2007, he reported, "sea ice cover had shrunk to the lowest level ever recorded. But for some reason the warmists are less keen on the latest satellite findings, reported by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ... Its graph of northern hemisphere sea ice area, which shows the ice shrinking from 13,000 million sq km to just 4 million from the start of 2007 to October, also shows it now almost back to 13 million sq km". To reinforce this point, he helpfully republished the graph, showing that the ice had indeed expanded between September and January. The Sunday Telegraph continues to employ a man who cannot tell the difference between summer and winter.

But for the Wikipedia Professor of Gibberish, this patron saint of charlatans, even the seasons are negotiable. Booker remains right, whatever the evidence says. It is hard to think of any journalist - Melanie Phillips included - who has spread more misinformation. The world becomes even harder to navigate. You cannot trust the people who tell you whom to trust.

12 Votes to Publish (Sift Talk Post)

silvercord says...

I can measure it from a purely anecdotal and singular observational point of view. I joined the Sift on April 14, 2006. I watched gold stars go up right and left as I believe you needed 4 or 5 votes to get a video published (semi-dynamic queue escape value) and postings were unlimited. Then, postings went to 2 in a 24 hour period and then to 3 in a 36 hour period. Gold stars were pretty easy to be had.

After those good ol' days, the queue escape level increase to 6 (230 days ago) and then, later, to 8 (215 days ago). I think that is when I began posting when it was at 8. (My first post was approximately 130 days ago.) There was also a 6 day expiration in the queue which went down to 5 and is now at 4.

It was about 190 days ago that this happened:

Posts that have less than 2 votes after 24 hours will be discarded.

Posts that have less than 3 votes after 48 hours will be discarded.

This will happen once a day at the same time we do our usual daily queue discard.

We've also raised the queue escape level again, as the front page is still going through a complete refresh every few hours it seems. The new peak-time escape level is 9 off-peak is 8.

Nine days later the submission quota of three in the queue at any one time kicked in.

All of these changes seemed to resolve the increasing submission glut for a while. Since then there have been some minor tweaks as well as some cool stuff: promote, save, collectives, new categories, et al. However, gold stars are harder to come by and it seems that diamonds are going to be nigh impossible.

I'm wondering if by having a collective that the videos submitted could somehow earn points for the collective owner toward diamond status. I'm just thinking as I type, but maybe a percentage of the votes earned by the original submitter would also count toward the collective owner. For instance, dag submits a video to the Rock and Roll Collective that garners him 20 votes - well, then MLX would get 5 votes as well (or 10 or something along those lines). Then, for those who were able to attain gold stars (which is becoming increasingly difficult) would at least have some kind of a shot at a diamond.

Long way of saying - yea, it's gotten tougher, but, yea, the Sift is cooler, too.

Have a great night,

Sc
