I agree on not forgiving the blatantly racist factions. I've said the same thing of ISIS, jihadists and their ilk. They and guys like Richard Spencer remain the mortal enemies of civilization. We never accept them or their ideas, if they want peace or cooperation, they are the ones that need to change.

I do still fear that for all practical purposes your position, and seemingly that of the democrats and protesters out in force, is little different from writing off everyone that voted Trump. If the expectation is that Trump voters need to be the ones that swallow all the change or make all the compromises then the difference doesn't matter. If you want to get people to vote your ticket or candidate, you've got to be the ones reaching out. Demanding the prospective voters come apologetically to your party isn't drawing them in, it's driving them away.

Yeah, the wife liked it. It was okay the first couple of seasons but when Mulan, Anna, and Elsa started showing up they kinda jumped the shark. I will say that Lana Parilla does an amazing job playing the Evil Queen/Mayor, as does Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold.

You don't need to link any angry man-hating feminist videos, and I don't need to link any angry woman-hating videos by people calling themselves humanists while threatening Anita Sarkeesian's life. We both know that they exist, and should ideally agree that this doesn't mean most self-labelled feminists hate men and most self-labelled humanists don't hate women. In fact, the vast majority of feminists and humanists don't even make angry videos on the internet.

Then you go into statistics on rape by men against women outside of prison and rape by men against in prison. This is a fucking horrible cultural phenomenon, and I discussed that. Above. You saw it? As for Nicholas Cristakis in the video you link to, there's a shitload to discuss there, but it's much more nuanced and weird than feminism vs whatever.

- There's the weirdness of the role of a 'Master' and what it has come to mean at Yale. While I think the students are being unbearably unbearable, it would be a little different if they did it to a teacher rather than a master, who has a sort of weird guidance counsellor / therapist role. I don't know why that role needs to exist, or what it means in practice normally.
- There's the absolute insufferable pampered entitled gall and rudeness of those students which makes my goddamn blood boil.
- There's the question of racism and cultural appropriation at halloween (which started the whole thing) which to me is both a silly and difficult debate; I'm absolutely disguested by blackface, but I don't really mind if some four-year old white or black or hispanic girl wants to dress up as Mulan.
- There's the issue of job security in the academic world and what kind of protection Christakis has from fallout over a perfectly reasonable letter his wife wrote...

This video goes towards confirming what I've felt in my gut about films for a few years now. More specifically, the lack of female role models in them. For example, try to think of the last kids film that had a female as the protagonist. The last I can think of is Labyrinth (though I'll concede there's probably also been a few since then).

Sounds like someone doesn't like examining the questioning of culture.

If you disagree with some of the points made by other posters - which I think are fairly reasonable - maybe explain your reasoning. Calling them babies, or implying they're not ready to examine their acceptance of popular culture or something, isn't productive and isn't going to change anyone's mind. They're making valid arguments, so respond in kind rather than dismissing them.

You might make a case, for example, that young viewers will not grasp the overall story message of Mulan (which I think is quite a positive one in terms of gender roles) - but instead will accept behaviors and attitudes modeled in certain scenes. Myself, I think most audience members will grasp that many of the behaviors being modeled are negative - that, for example, Gaston is being ridiculed rather than glorified. Some movies have certainly been very bad, but in general I think they're getting better and more sensitive on these fronts.

And when the focal point of a movie is that sexism is wrong, it's going to be hard not to have some of those negative behaviors portrayed.

Hercules is depicted as being in peak physical condition BECAUSE HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD! Mulan is taught "that masculinity is primarily defined by strength and physical prowess" BECAUSE SHE'S JOINING THE ARMY! c'mon people. analyze a little further and most of these can be explained.
