EDPS: 'Soviet Internet possible' - new article inside, 09/15 (Politics Talk Post)

radx says...

I'm always wondering what's more depressing: how easy those folks in Brussels can be influenced by lobbyists or just how incompetent the "movers and shakers" really are. There are videos online of "La Quadrature du net"-activists talking to them and they really have no idea of the consequences of their decisions.

thepinky, kudos for engaging in conversation. My question to you is, how do you make the leap from "unmoved mover" to "God of the Bible"? There is absolutely no link, except for the bible saying it is so.

By the way, many atheists (such as Dawkins) accept that there may be a greater intelligence that some may call God, but as a completely separate idea from those described in religious texts.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll have to look it up.

Great. Now I want to defend Catholicism from drive-by comments like the one you just made about the Pope. Come on. I know you're smart enough to know why that was a stupid things to say about Catholics.

Yes, you have a point about creationists not knowing what created God, but you're right, atheists have the very same problem. The only three options are (uncaused) infinity, (uncaused) cosmos springing from nothing, or an unmoved mover. Science cannot explain the cosmos. It tries, but it can't. Why not believe in a supernatural cause, because I truly believe that science cannot possibly explain the origins of the cosmos any more rationally than creationists.

So, I respect your agnosticism. Neither side can be proven, can it? It comes down to picking a side, not picking a side, or basing your beliefs on something other than the things that have failed us so far: That is, the cold, hard, unhelpful facts.

The thing that I find amazing is that atheists take it for granted that no one could possibly give a compelling argument that atheism is irrational. Can you tell me what happened 3 millionths of a second before the big bang?

What does being an atheist have to do with the big bang?

So...has the universe always existed and will it always exist?

Well, yes and no. The universe as we know it has not always existed, but the matter has, in some form or another, and will always exist, even after the universe as we know it ceases to exist.

Alright, then. Did it come from nothing? NO WAY! That's an uncaused event and irrational. Well, then, what is the only solution left to us? An unmoved mover is the only other possible solution. In other words, a supernatural cause. In other words, we're all searching for answers to questions that we cannot possibly answer with our infantile understandings of the cosmos.

I don't know where the matter came from, but there are scientists working on figuring that out.

Are you saying we just give up and accept that it's some supernatural force at work? There was a time when people thought that diseases were caused by supernatural forces, but thankfully there were people who didn't accept that as fact and looked for the real reasons that caused them. That led to germ theory, which led to antibiotics, then microbiology and many more medical advances.

Imagine all of the things that we wouldn't have today if people just said, well we can't possibly understand this, therefore it must be supernatural and leave it at that.

Cheap shot. Why make this movie? I'll tell you why. So that all of you "intellectuals" can feel fulfilled and pat yourselves on the back for being enlightened. No thanks.

So, you enjoyed 'Expelled' then? Really, to say 'cheap shot' is pretty weak, think about it... by saying cheap shot, you're really saying 'Yeah, it's obviously stupid, you're just picking the really obviously stupid points of religions'... like... oh, most of it.
He's pointing out the insanity of believing in the bible/Koran/Torah etc. as literal truth. To believe there really was a snake that talked to Eve, to believe there really was Adam and an Eve in an idyllic garden in the first place. To believe there was a boat, made by one guy, who held two of EVERY SPECIES ON THIS EARTH TODAY (and all the thousands that have become extinct in the last 2000 years).
It is insane.
They're parables, stories, fables, they're meant to teach lessons, not to be taken literally and taught as FACT in schools.
So saying this is some 'intellectual' breast beating movie is ridiculous. It's (hopefully, obviously I haven't seen it, but I've listened to him talk about it a lot) a demonstration of what's wrong with religion today.
In my mind the core teachings of most religions are great, tolerance, treat others as you would be treated, don't covet what other people have etc. These are good things to live by, but it's twisting and corrupting of that core acceptance teaching and turning it into a shunning and hatred of others and pushing for religious doctrine over proven scientific fact.
It's a horrible state to be in, which is why movies like this DO have a place.

Didn't see it.

Tell me, do scientists believe in uncaused events? No, to do so would be irrational. So...has the universe always existed and will it always exist? No. That's an uncaused event and irrational. It's called cosmogony. You strike me as an educated individual and you've probably heard of it.

Obama faces racism in West Virginia

drattus says...

Democrat paradox? "Vote for Obama because he's Black."

Hillary lead Obama even among black voters in most of the leadup to the campaign, it was only when the "fantasy" and other comments were made in South Carolina early on in this thing that people started to turn to Obama. I doubt that's when they first noticed he was black. Personally I saw little difference between the two until after the race was on so I didn't much like either, what made my choice was pretty simple. I'll offer you the words of a Conservative icon for why.

The Democrats have firm principled beliefs. What motivates most Republican leaders? Nothing except a craving for power. What do Republicans offer voters? Nothing except “Elect us because we’re not Democrats.”

That's a quote from a recent article written by the man known as the "funding father" of conservative causes and one of the biggest movers behind repub mass mail efforts, he and those like him fed and grew the party over recent years. I don't really agree that dems have firm, principled beliefs, but they do talk them. Now if only they'd vote that way too I might start to believe it. It's the public impression these days though.

http://ultimatejohnmccain.com/blog_post/show/17?eid=35f115ef74d62ec3303825bab766831c

The reason Barrack is doing better than her is the same reason dems in general are doing better than repubs these days. Hillary decided to campaign as if she were the repub and Obama the dem and she did it in the Democratic primary. The nation as a whole has turned away from that type of politics, she was 5 or 10 years too late for that type of strat to work like she wanted it to and just didn't notice that the nation was changing under her. Not quite ready on day one this time.

If she had campaigned with some class instead of aggression she'd have had the nomination handed to her on a platter and Obama would be the VP maybe, instead we heard insults about him from day one and claims about "ready on day one" she couldn't live up to about her. Built up those expectations herself then didn't live up to it. She threw it away, nobody took it from her.

With your wealth of music info, you're probably aware, but kd lang, early in her career thought she was channeling Patsy. Thus, kd lang and the "reclines", her early band.

Patsy Cline (b. Virginia Patterson Hensley September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963) was an American country music singer, who enjoyed pop music crossover success during the era of the Nashville Sound in the early 1960s. Since her death at the age of 30 in a 1963 plane crash at the height of her career, she has been considered one of the most influential, successful, revered, and acclaimed female vocalists of the 20th century. Her life and career has been the subject of numerous books, movies, documentaries, articles, and stage plays.

Cline was best known for her rich tone and emotionally expressive voice, which, along with her role as a mover and shaker in the country music industry, has been cited and praised as an inspiration by many vocalists of various music genres.

How to Ruin a Trip to the Museum

HistNerd says...

I am from Denver and I absolutely love this museum. When I was growing up it was one of my favorite places to go, and now whenever I'm back in town I make it a point to visit and stroll through "Prehistoric Journey" (what's featured with the dinosaurs) and the wildlife halls. Anyway, I thought this quote from Consilience written by Edward O. Wilson is appropriate:

"Perhaps God did create all organisms, including human beings, in finished form, in one stroke, and maybe it all happened several thousand years ago. But if that is true, He also salted the earth with false evidence in such endless and exquisite detail, and so thoroughly from pole to pole, as to make us conclude first that life evolved, and second that the process took billions of years. Surely Scripture tells us He would not do that. The Prime Mover of the Old and New Testaments is variously loving, magisterial, denying, thunderously angry, and mysterious, but never tricky."

The "Aquaduct" : pedal-powered water filtering vehicle

bamdrew says...

This is not an invention looking for buyers, its an invention looking for investors, manufacturers and distributors. I'd also be interested in what sort of replaceable filtration technology they currently employ. Would be ingenious if they could be manufactured and replaced onsite ( http://pbskids.org/zoom/activities/sci/waterfilter.html ).

I remember an interesting movement kinetics study from a few years ago, analyzing the efficiency of movement for different animals. Humans walking were remarkably inefficient compared to many animals, the most lopsided comparisons being against large birds, like condors. HOWEVER, human's on bikes were exceedingly efficient movers, demonstrating how ingenuity is the 'bread and butter' of our species.

Good news is he's "gone" twice today so at least stuffs moving in there Not as great though is he still behaves the same. I had to help him get up this morning and he's been wary and guarded all day. He hasn't been shaking so maybe it's improving just not as fast as we'd like.
He went with us to visit Mawmaw (grandma) for a goodbye lunch and he wasn't even interested in ham. IN HAM! Poor guy.
The movers arrive first thing so I'm crossing my fingers he's not too freaked out by them.

Adjusting the Queue (Sift Talk Post)

drattus says...

It's been two nights rather than a few but I've got some first impressions, doubt they'll change much though I'll still play with it some.

Things are fine the way they are. Best ratio seems to work for the casual sifter and would guide them toward the more popular queued vids so works as the default but personally I'd guess the more dedicated sifters will drift back toward the most recent view. What I find is I'm looking at the same vids too often and would have to go through the whole queue to make sure I don't miss a gem somewhere. Most recent and I'll get most except the fast movers which I'll probably see later on the top 15 so no loss.

As long as we can change the default for ourselves and have it stick it looks good to me.
