Milton Friedman puts a young Michael Moore in his place
That was a totally disingenuous argument from Friedman.
Yes, at some point you must place a dollar figure on human life, but it depends on what is going to be done with the money saved. If you say, we're not going to treat a dozen patients with a rare disease that would cost the state tens of millions of dollars, and instead use that money on highway safety, or to improve healthcare for others, with the net impact that you save MORE lives with the money, that is a valid argument.
What he's proposing is that some billionaire (or at the least, multi-millionaire) should pocket a few million extra they saved by not installing the safety feature.
Not all money is equal. That's easy to prove.
Give a million dollars to ten families that are on the edge of bankruptcy and it will change their lives.
Give a million dollars to Mitt Romney and he'll forget your name as soon as you walk out of the room.
Jack Black takes the million dollar question very seriously
Who Wants to be a Millionaire Comedy Edition - Jack Black has been added as a related post - related requested by Zawash on that post.
Only Canadian Hockey Fights End This Way
I'm Canadian and I don't get the appeal of NHL. It's a bunch of tax-supported multi-millionaires skating around wearing the uniform of a city that they probably don't even know -- it just happens to be the one willing to pay the money they're demanding.
Except for combat sports where there's a real risk of serious injury or death, there isn't a professional athlete anywhere who is worth their paycheque. Watch school level sports to see kids who play it for the pure love of the game...
It Doesn't Get Better
Relatively speaking High School is a short episode in one's life, unfortunately it occurs during a period of heavy social and physical development. So experiences during this time can often play a major role in how you see the world from that point onward. I'd also agree that as well intentioned as these videos are they are also vastly oversimplifying the reality of how people turn out after HS. Most nerds in HS will not grow up to be multi millionaire tech giants and sometimes feel like even more of a failure when they don't reach that goal.
Success or failure in life doesn't depend on how nice/mean you were in high school. Even your attitude as an adult has little dependence on this. High school is such a short episode in one's life, why people put so much effort on these videos is beyond me.
Despite the premise of the video, after 20 or so years, few people are the same, even if they never left the neighborhood.
The Wire creator David Simon on "America as a Horror Show"
It wasn't me who first pointed out Simon as a hypocritical "liberal bully."
"Here’s why I assert Simon is a bully. His own words reveal him to be a petty, nasty, mean-spirited guy. “…anything I've ever accomplished as a writer, as somebody doing TV, anything I've ever done in life, down to, like, cleaning up my room, has been accomplished because I was going to show people that they were [bleeped] up, wrong, and that I was the [bleeping] center of the universe and the sooner they got hip to that, the happier they would all be.""
Statist narcissism.
There's as much as you'd like on this. How about...?
"David Simon, a multi-millionaire writer for Time-Warner, one of the largest corporations in the world and a cultural leader, jetted across the globe to speak in front an audience of people with both the financial means and free time about the horrors of “unchecked” capitalism and the tragic loss of the social compact."
"It is rich that a leading light of Hollywood, that of unpaid interns, unmatched inequality of pay, tax-avoidance schemes, exploitation of public subsidies, industry scheming, etc., would criticize a “broken social compact.”"
"Meanwhile, in the real world of unchecked, no-social-compact capitalism, the WSJ is reporting that the “Burger Wars” are expanding to Africa. The heartless capitalist system is stepping in where communism, socialism and other authoritarian systems have failed, bringing with it the digging of new wells, food production systems, jobs, etc. All that awful stuff that comfortable capitalists take for granted."
EDIT: To be clear, I have no specific interest in advocating for Koch, or Simon, or whomever, or in prosecuting them or @radx or anyone else. But I do think this kind of pernicious thinking/bullying can and does spread and causes much harm, even to those engaging in the thinking/bullying, it distorts them in an undesirable way, so I point it out.
Louis C.K. & Jerry Seinfeld Take Louis Yacht Out For A Spin
Naw man, a boats' referred to as a submarine...if yer Navy-But seriously, any ship or boat used primarily for recreational jaunts...is a yacht.
Why does millionaire frikkin' Seinfeld drive such tiny POS death-mobiles!? He must own at least ONE car that won't get him killed??
I think I'd class that more as a boat, than a yacht.
Teen in Prison for Years Without Being Convicted of Crime
You forget, that because of this, he will soon be a millionaire.
brighter side somewhere!
Shannon Sharpe Rips the Dolphins' Locker Room Culture
Can you point me towards a comparable situation? I can't recall a situation where he was making an emotional plea about an important topic and was ripped for his usual stutter. People like Jon Stewart pick their spots. Comedy is about timing.
I'm not saying you can't get your digs in. I'm saying there's a time and place. Shannon Sharpe's speech impediments and questionable word choice are widely joked about:
http://www.theonion.com/articles/cbs-producers-ask-shannon-sharpe-to-use-at-least-3,7044/
That doesn't bother me. He's plenty self deprecating about his "book smahts." My issue is with context. 99 percent of the time you could crack these jokes in his face and he'd laugh right along with you. If you did it here, he'd rip you in half. The guy grew up dirt ass poor in rural georgia. He made himself a millionaire. What does he need to do for the peanut gallery to shut the fuck up for 2 minutes while he talks about something important? If he was being granted a shred of respect, they would.
I have just 1 word for you:
George W Bush.
How It's Made Baseballs
Costa Rica apparently.
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/25/world/low-wage-costa-ricans-make-baseballs-for-millionaires.html
That was a lot more complex than I expected! But no mention of where they're made... Not in North America for sure.
Americans Against Context
Context is everything.
King obama said he'd only raise taxes on "millionaires making 250K and above".
Actual result: 77% of Americans' taxes raised. One trillion in new ocrapcare taxes.
Fan attempts the $1000 half-court shot and.........
A thousand dollar winner! Congrats, dude, according to King obama, that means you're a millionaire!
Zipline Catapulting Into Lake
Looks like heap of fun...howd they get all that gear? Millionaires kids?
Jon Stewart Mocks Walmart For Vilifying Unions
Ain't laughin', ain't entertaining-The douche looks tired-Maybe stow his schtick 'n retire a millionaire before he makes it worse for second sons with no sense of humor?
Yawn into obscurity with the rest making light of the developmentally disabled writing their own script for an un-marked grave-...That's you folks!
Bill Nye On The Lottery
There are 2,900 millionaires in the UK created by the lottery. I agree, the odds of winning are extremely remote, but you have to be in it to win it. I saw recently a video of a guy in Australia who, having won it once, was re-enacting it-at the same shop- for the cameras. You guessed it, he won again, $250,000. The lottery is a chance to dream once a week and, who knows, it could be you.
And that's why I don't gamble!
Black Friday 2012 Fights At Wal Mart Over Phones
.....and the millionaires laughed and laughed and laughed.
