Intel shows extremely FAST Thunderbolt technology.
>> ^dag:
I was going to say the same thing. I think my next Macbook will have an SSD. Finally, no moving internal parts. >> ^deathcow:
Hook me up with this and SSD drives.
He says it's 10 gigabit. I think it's two independant channels of 10 gigabits.
I'm not sure I can tell much of a difference with mine.

Art table milled from a 400kg slab of aluminium
I think it's a beautiful piece... of art.
No one would own this as a practical table. If I were Steve Jobs I'd commission one to put my MacBook on.
Yes, it has a glass top.
And the table itself is not 400KG - the original slab block that it was milled from was 400KG. With most of the volume removed from the bowl curve and holes, I'm sure it weighs much less (but still heavy).
All of that "waste" aluminum is easily recycled.
Apple's Diabolical Plan to Screw your iPhone
>> ^kronosposeidon:
I'm not an Apple fan to start with, but I'm going to say anyway that their products always seem dumbed down and sterile. Really, Apple, I swear I can handle a few more buttons on my phone. Minimalism might be an interesting art form, but to me when you skimp on features it just seems cheap and controlling. >> ^vaporlock:
That's screwed up (no pun intended), swapping out peoples screws. It really turns me off that Apple is such a control freak. Their products always feel handicapped in some way. Without some opening up of the next I phone (mini SD slot, etc) I'm swapping to one of the great Android phones out now.
You should watch Jonathan Ives wanking off about his MacBook Air design on the Apple site. He's precisely the sort of tosspost Hoxton media twat I utterly detest.
What will define the 2010 decade? (Politics Talk Post)
>> ^blankfist:
Let me try my top 21 predictions for the next decade! A lot of this will be US centric.
1. HDTV dimensions will increased from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160.
2. Screens will be increased to print pixel depths. 300dpi is only the beginning.
3. An affordable, flexible LCD material will change the tech and advertising world. Maybe the material can be cut to fit any size?
4. The war in Iraq will be over. But the occupation will last for decades. Other wars in the Middle East will continue.
5. Sarah Palin will never be President.
6. The US Deficit will grow to a historical high. As the Dollar and the Renminbi compete for world currency a new Cold War will be declared.
7. Top 40 music will suck.
8. The browser will be integrated as part of the OS and no longer treated as just software. Your work software (IDEs, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) will be treated as online plug-ins, savable (with versioning) in the cloud.
9. Electricity will be wireless.
10. Reality Shows will be the new sitcom. Again.
11. China's working class will stage small worker union revolts, but the scale and number will be dramatically inflated by the media.
12. Tommy Lee Jones, Adam Ant, Joel Coen, Matt Groening, Bill Clinton, Lorne Michaels, Sam Elliot, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Steve Jobs and Roy Scheider. One of them will probably pass away.
13. Google will acquire Facebook.
14. Apple's stock will drop if Jobs passes away. They'll try to embody the innovate spirit of Jobs, but they'll miss the mark and stick to just updating the current products like iPod, iPhone, Macbooks, etc.
15. There will be an assassination attempt on a Congressman. Congress will pass into law the Vigilant Act that declares DC to "be at war". As a result no civilians except current residents are permitted to enter. Under the Act any type of search and seizure in DC is legal. To counteract the bad press, the America Museum is opened in Virginia.
16. GM will file for bankruptcy.
17. Like the huge increase in gas prices as become part of day for the US, the people will grow accustomed to the high rate of unemployment. Politicians will no longer talk about gas prices or unemployment.
18. Marijuana is legalized in three states. It's legalized for medicinal use in seventeen states.
19. Autism is linked to the artificial sweetener, Aspartame.
20. Most internet enabled TVs and projectors become equipped with a'la carte system of channel ordering. So you only buy what channels you want streamed to your tv.
21. A new phone technology is developed that works a lot like bit torrent. The phone's signal piggy backs off other phones in the area, and the more phones in an area the better the signal. Most people, however, turn this feature off because it's rumored to be a security weakness.
To answer a select few points:
1. I thought 4k displays would be up next? (4096×3072; as a coder I hate widescreens. I need horizontal screen real estate).
3. This will happen sooner than we'd like
7. When did it not?
9. See 3.
Addendum to 21: We will see a surge of private networks, linked by VPNs and shared by friends; mostly done by people trying to run away from all the crass advertisements and data gathering schemes in the net today.

Cleaning A Laptop Fan- not so easy
>> ^handmethekeysyou:
^to be clear, macs aren't any easier with this.
White Unibody MacBook :
1 - Remove 8 screws from bottom
2 - Remove bottom case
3 - Blow compressed air into fan
4 - Do the opposite of steps 1 & 2 in reverse order
That can potentially cause ESD if you use the compressed air. use an antistatic vacuum next time

Need a new travel laptop... (Geek Talk Post)
>> ^dag:
The 10" MacBook Air is getting stellar reviews. Though you might want to wait a couple of months - as there seems to be a few technical kinks with the display.
Apple - It just works - except for when it doesn't.

AFAIK, Keynote (and iWork) won't run on windows (your only option with Sony)
You can run windows apps on Macs using Parallels, VMware Fusion, or VirtualBox. (I've used all of them, the newest parallels is about the best feature wise, but costs money where virtualbox is free. Vmware has a free Player for other OS, but not for mac). You can also dual-boot a mac to windows, but this is less convenient.
The macbook air has a max memory limit of 4GB. This might limit your work in Matlab, depending on the toolboxes you use and the datasets you create. Also, the macbook air does NOT have a firewire 800 port, so if you want to use an external hard drive, you are stuck with USB 2.0. I also heard the new Airs have some technical problems, so I agree that you should wait a few months.
I would suggest a Macbook Pro, but this has 13" screen, and is over 3lbs.
So if those are both "must have" requirements, then the only thing you can get is the 11" MacBook Air. Those only have an SSD option, and between the OS, AutoDesk, and Matlab, will start to quickly fill that 64 or 128GB capacity (more like 120 after formatting).
Don't forget to buy the $29 mini-displayPort to VGA adapter if you are going to use this for presentations - most places still have VGA connections on projectors. (monoprice has one that is slightly cheaper and also works fine)
