How Float Plane takes off without water

*LIVE FEED** Final Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (Science Talk Post)

jerickJ says...

The space shuttle had lift off. Finally. After several weeks of delays, National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided to break with custom and the Space Shuttle launched. Though the mission was delayed for a number of weeks, the Shuttle Endeavour recently lifted off the launch pad and thundered to the skies. It is the final journey of the Endeavour.

How to win a game of Starcraft 2 in one minute

Terran hides his building by lifting off. Protoss scouts where T's base should be and doesn't find it. Terran writes a fake error message in chat, Protoss assumes Terran never connected/whatever and leaves. Terran wins by default.
For those butthurt over griefing or w/e...srsly? This is a lot less obnoxious than a 6pool, or 5 rax reaper proxy gates or any other kind of all in rush build, and those are viable strats. Maybe not good ones, but viable all the same. Part of graduating from noob is learning how to deal with this shit, and you learn by failing. This particular strat WILL fail 99% of the time, so really no need to feel bad for the guy who got tricked.

I get that, but you win...? So what? Does that affect your stats or something?

I haven't played an RTS since WarCraft 2. They annoy me now.

Quake Done Quick 720p

It's the precision grenade jumping that always amazes. Rocket jumping isn't so hard, but the grenade jumping where he bounces a gren to exactly the right spot, before lifting off... wtf.

INCREDIBLE video of space shuttle ascent

ReverendTed says...

What's impressive to me is how evenly the whole mess lifts off from the pad under the power of what are essentially two enormous bottle rockets.

We really need to make some strides toward that elevator, though. Seems like a whole lot of effort just to send six dudes into low earth orbit.

INCREDIBLE video of space shuttle ascent

Xaielao says...

I watched that on my entertainment system (Samsung LN52A750, one of the most gorgeous LCD HDTV's ever IMHO, Pioneer VSX-1018AH, Polk dolby 7.1 surround) in 1080p with my reciever on about +25db and it was simply GLORIOUS! The picture was amazing (even the camera on the main tank) and the room was shaking as the shuttle lifted off.

I really felt like I was there. But even then I can only imagine how stunning it must be to watch it live.

edit: BTW, I watched this on CNN. So keep your eyes open for the next (and perhaps last) launch. If you have a solid entertainment system it will blow you away.

The World's Largest (Flying) Bird - The Andean Condor

cybrbeast says...

^ I guess it is possible. It is confirmed that oxygen concentrations have varied, and were higher in the past, this might have given the animal better performance.
However I think the theory of the bird lifting off like a hang glider quite plausible and elegant. If you see the ease at which hang gliders can take off on the right slope and thermal, it's not that hard to imagine an evolved animal being far superior in take off from slopes.

Horrifically stupid AI in under-development game Arma 2

shole says...

i'm fairly sure the AI was going through it's lift-off script, and upon spotting the player the avoidance script switched on and the two scripts kept playing on top of eachother
what it needs is a check to cancel the lift-off script if an obstruction is detected
silly, but a very easy mistake to make
i wouldn't call it a 'fail' as it's not really an AI issue but scripting issue
if you want a fail in this game it's not hard to find one though.. just try put an AI behind the wheel and see it hit the same tree ten times (this was improved upon a lot in 1.02 patch though)

Rocket Nut Fail

budzos says...

I thought he might achieve lift off for a second. Most epic nut shot of all time for sure. Frework that size goes about 175 feet in one second... multiply by about 3/4 of a lb and that's a lot of damn force it's putting out. Fortunately it didn't get to accelerate all that much before impact, but the rocket would have been pushing on his balls. Probably felt like a big iron pole being pushed hard into his ballsack. I wonder if it burned? Big lulz here man.

EDIT: just watched again and it probably doesn't put out that much force. I dunno. Either way, fucking hilarious.

Plane overshoots runway at St. Barts airport

joedirt says...

Wow.. they have guidelines for landing.. 20 ft above the runway he was required to pull up and make another pass if he was over a certain airspeed.

Also, his wheels didn't touchdown by the first big white bars...

I'll bet even when you could tell he knew he wasn't going to stop (the big skid noises) he could have still jammed on the throttle and lifted off, at the very least he would have skidded on the water, instead of almost cartwheeling across sand.

Porsche GT1 - Amazing airborne end-over-end flip

rottenseed says...

The idea of drafting is to use the car in front as a drag barrier. The problem with this is that the drag is beneficial for keeping the car on the ground. Without the higher pressure above and maintaining the same pressure below the vehicle, it's lift off time.

Good for aviation, bad for race car driving.
