Intense Camera View from From Landing Gear of 747

First Flight of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Plane on the ground is hit by lightning

They're not pussies (even though I thought so at first too). If you look closely at the front landing gear, you'll see an arc of electricity jumped from the plane to the ground. They were standing close to it. I would've run too.

I have been reviewing the flight manual in the case of a front and main gear partial/non extend, and one thing to note is that both speed brakes and reverse thrust are not recommended. Doing a belly landing, you would image that coming to a complete stop is the most important aspect, and the manual does recommend dropping fuel to make for the slowest possible landing speed. However, speed brakes and reverse thrust can have an overwhelming asymmetric affect and hinder the ability to control the aircraft. They also recommend letting the engines touch down first, which we don't see here, instead he lets the tail hit first with a slight over flare. The guild recommends a engine first landing because you still have a good amount of rudder control until about 60 knots.

I just thought it interesting that the natural intuition, to stop a plane with no landing gear as fast as possible isn't actually the recommended solution. The real goal is to stop it with full control of the aircraft and a belly landing places a lot of power into the random hands of friction, which I find fascinating.

Brazilian Police Ram Airplane To Stop Smugglers

I'm actually brazilian. What he says right before he hits is: "I'm gointo hit the wing. I'm goint to hit the wing, don't shoot."

So he chose to ram the fuel tank in the wing.
One bump on the tail and that plane would not be going anywhere.

True nuff, but it is also the strongest part of the aircraft, meaning that truck would of been in worse shape than it already was. Then again, perhaps I don't give enough credit to the bulk of an SUV, I don't ram many planes...

As he hit the landing gear, one would assume that is what he was trying for, not the wing per se.

Boeing 767 - Emergency Landing With No Landing Gear

These planes are 20+ years old. LOT needs new planes. Flew with LOT several times and its just ridiculous.
Just goes to show you, they don't build 'em like they used to.

The 767 has a far fewer deaths than its older cousin the 737. It isn't apples to apples, because they aren't the same class of plane, but the 737 has well over 3500+ fatalities, where as the 767 has about 500+. Its brother, the Narrow body 757, is over 700+ deaths in its run so far. The 737 is only a decade older, not enough to make up the death per year ratio of the 737. So in this case, thank god they don't make them like they used to. If you notice that in the ten latest crashes include a 737 and a 747. The 767 has had a bad rap ever since EgyptAir Flight 990, but it is a good hull if properly maintained. That being said, the plane in question was delivered to LOT on 15 May 1997, a very new plane in all respects.

Boeing 767 - Emergency Landing With No Landing Gear

Ghostly says...

Translation I did for the fun of it. The reporters are a bit chaotic and babbling -_-;;

Man: The plane flown by airline Lot, is one which has undergone many modernisations, and even if it is 5, 10 or 12 years old well that is...
Women: (cuts in) The plane is landing, we have footage. It looks like the emergency landing attempt is successful. It landed without the landing gear.
Man : (talking over woman) It looks like it's landing on a cushion of foam.
Woman: (continuing to talk simultaneously) a foam cushion, yes that's right that's what was prepared.
Man: That's also the reason for what's happening behind the plane at this moment it is plumes of vaporised foam or other liquids. Ah it seems it is now scraping the runway with the right engine, because it's sparking.
Woman: (cutting in) Yes but it is after all as the Pawel Frondczak, spokesman for the state fire department said, the runway has been coated with a special foam in preparation, and it seems this was a wise move and plane has now landed, stopped and nothing has happened.
Man: And the most important thing now is the next 20-30 seconds, ladies and gentlemen, you'll see in a moment how quickly the fire trucks will arrive on the scene. These are special modern fire trucks which are capable of accelerating up to 140km/h on this runway, so that they can reach the plane as soon as possible. And in a moment they will probably be dousing it with fire extinguishing foam, in particular, though we cannot see in this shot, the engine on the right side of the plane which scraped the runway will be among the first sections to be doused with foam.

Continental Airlines Boeing 777 Dumping Fuel

Hybrid says...

This is perfectly normal procedure when a plane has to return to/land at an airport when heavily laden with fuel. It's not to reduce the risk of explosions on landing impact, it's simply because the plane is too heavy to land with all that fuel on board. Planes have a maximum landing weight that the aircraft body and landing gear can withstand, and this weight is always less than the maximum take off weight. So, if a plane has to make an emergency landing (in this case due to a hydraulic issue), they need to dump the fuel to get it below the maximum landing weight.

Saying that, fuel dumping normally occurs out at sea (for coastal airports) or over uninhabited land. However in this case, that could obviously not be done.

... in an emergency (as in the plane could potentially crash), fuel dumping is the last thing on the pilot's mind... what if the pilot dumps the fuel and recovers from the emergency? He may have dumped too much fuel to get to the nearest airport.
>> ^ponceleon:

Interesting but I have to wonder whether it is a matter of an emergency. Ultimately if a plane is having an emergency and can dump the fuel to reduce risk of explosions on impact (or elsewhere) I don't see a problem. I'd rather have a plane with little fuel falling out of the sky than a plane full of fuel falling out of the sky.

Well there ain't nothin' to this but your daughter
And the life you would not give her
Break your plans
Traipsed across the continent, a squatter
For your lies at night to sleep between my hands

When the lights come on this whole place gets ugly
But when they're out, strangers fall in love
She could never say that flat out she don't want me
'Cause I could never say that halfway ain't enough

New Order's on the turntable, we're dancing
'Cause what else do you do when you don't talk
Crucified then crawled into your mansion
Yeah, that's why I learned to crawl before I walk

We're back where we belong
Straight back where we belong
No days for nights [??]
No cocaine calls
Just back where we belong

Take me out back to your promise
And beat me until I can't even stand
Your whole life, a plane without no landing gear
So if this is it, then come on let me land

That trailer trash pedigree is callin'
It rides you out when you're down on all fours
Me I like to cast my death on yesterday
'Cause what doesn't kill us now
Just makes us better whores

We're back where we belong
Straight back where we belong
No days for nights [??]
No cocaine calls
Just back where we belong

Go put it in the ground
Go bury it somewhere it can't be found
Go put it in the ground

Well there ain't nothin' to this but your daughter
And the life you would not give her, break your plans
Traipsed across the continent, a squatter
For your lies at night to sleep between my hands

Plane Makes Rough Landing in Florida

GeeSussFreeK says...

He didn't get those props stopped before he lurched forward...that is expensive. I am pretty sure he would of gotten a landing gear failure to lock warning...maybe not though. If he did and didn't stop the blades that's a small oversight in what was a pretty good landing all things considered.
