(Mis/Ab)use of *related invoke (Sift Talk Post)

Mobius says...

Abuse ? you' re calling that abuse ?

I edited my comment so it would take up your screen so you would have to delete it. What I was going to write was abuse, That is why I stopped myself.

You are a whiner, I really don't get along with whiners, and now that I know you are one I'll just plop you on ignore like I am sure you have done to me.

This trying to publicly shame a person is pathetic on your part, i'll admit some of what I did was juvenile ( fun ) but calling that abuse is just wrong. You are wrong.

Wrong Wrong wrong.

Now lets get back on topic !

I think Eric cleared that up pretty nicely. It is open, VERY open to interpretation, I was interpreting *related wrong.

I learned two things today !

Welcome to America (Cop vs German Tourist)

poolcleaner says...

Not true. You're not just going to be randomly violated for breaking the speed limit. It's going to cost you some money and maybe a day or two in jail. What is the fear involved in going to jail? Impact on career. Jail isn't actually THAT bad in America. It's prison that's bad. You don't just go to fucking prison. That's stupid.

System of greed doesn't punish at the ass rape level unless you're a fucked outcast that goes through the juvenile system, which is majorly screwed up, or you go up to prison because you truly are someone that needs to be ass raped.

Well, he is after all a cop. So warning you what he has to do if you keep doing what you did, is actually quite generous.
As I said before, other cops, in other countries are not that generous.

George Galloway Storms Out Of Debate With Israeli Student

Jinx says...

Israel exists. How does not recognising them or refusing to debate their citizens do anything to change the fact that Israel and the problems it creates will still exist. Isn't this exactly the issue - two sides completely unwilling to communicate or compromise on anything?

And isn't debating more than just trying to convince your opponent? There is an audience present, and I dare say most of them aren't Israeli of military age. Further more, how many times have you known anybody to make a u-turn instantly on anything even when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contary of their beliefs. More often you are sowing the seeds that will eventually grow to undermine their convictions. I can't remember a time when Hitchens walked out on a debate because he felt his opponent was too firmly rooted to be swayed, or that they happened to be born in a specific country.

Was he misled by event organisers? Possibly, but its his word vs theirs so we'll never know. It certainly wouldn't have been news if he'd simply turned down the debate. Still, I think its juvenile to refuse to debate Israelis. He alienates those worth debating against and leaves him preaching only to his own choir, achieving absolutely zip. Way to go Galloway, even the moderates think you're a clown.

edit - I should mention I don't think there is anything wrong with turning down a debate against somebody. I think its something different to simply blacklist all Israelis, effectively deciding that they are all deaf to your opinions or that none exist that could offer new points.

CNN Sympathizes with High School Rapists

zor says...

This discussion comparing punishments for murder and sex offense is interesting to hear. Yes, if they killed someone (or a few people) by driving drunk or whatever at 16yo they wouldn't have to register as convicted murderers for the rest of their life. And they would be out of jail by 21. Besides, I thought juvenile court and that system was supposed to protect ALL concerned in an incident. The juvenile system was supposed to be set up ESPECIALLY for 16 year old boys who do terrible things. Everybody loses the way this is now.

CNN Sympathizes with High School Rapists

kevingrr says...

It is easy to call two 16 year old KIDS you don't know disgusting and depraved.

What they did is terribly wrong and they should be punished. The question is does the punishment fit the crime?

Personally I think we as a society would be better off if after their juvenile detention they were given an option at some sort of public service i.e. military or civil service that if performed adequately for a number of years would expunge their records and names from the registered sex offenders list. Give them some hope, make them learn a lesson, make them give back to the world/country.

When I was 16 I spent most nights playing Everquest and I never drank even when at a party... so these kinds of things didn't come up.

Flipping the Bird to the Judge - not a good idea

Lawdeedaw says...

No, the judge has no responsibility towards helping anyone. Would you say that a judge should work to convict someone if we all "know" they are guilty but cannot necessarily prove it? Ie. should he help out society to try to convict, say, a murderer?Take OJ's judge, or perhaps to a lesser extent Casey Anthony's. That is a slippery slope my friend. I will say though that he was out of line with his attitude, but we attribute the wrong attitude towards judges.

A judge should take no position. For example, a judge that gives probation over and over again to juveniles for burglary (Their typical charge) is doing them no favor at all because they think the justice system has no teeth. Then when they rape or agg bat, they go from 3-4 months and probation to 25 years. All because of our joke system that encourages leniency the first few times--then ass fucking after that. I see it everyday. If the kids would have some bitten off at the start perhaps they would not be so disrespectful to rules in general (And no, programs haven't worked often from what I see...drug program? Great for a bunch of addicts to get together and, do drugs...)

His demeanor was encouraging her, so his initial warning was lost.

It would have been enough to tell her she owes an extra $5k, but he'll forgive it if she comes back tomorrow with a serious apology.

The judge's job is to try to turn bad citizens into good citizens. But here, he instead failed to control the situation, and was ultimately responsible for it escalating.

I agree. Voltaire, free speech and all that. No-one should be murdered for their opinions.
That said, the rule is freedom of speech, not freedom of consequences from speech. You're free to call your boss a turd and he's free to fire your ass for it.
So with that in mind, I propose a compromise. No-one at the WBC gets murdered, but the next time they picket a funeral, a bunch of marines kick the crap outta them.

Yogi, they're fucking terrible, but unfortunately it's their right to be fucking awful.

edit: also am I the only one who really doesn't like Russell Brands comedy? It's childish, and I don't mean that it's juvenile, I mean its actually the kind of comedy an 8 year old would do at a school talent day.

People are murdered for their opinions every day. A lot of times they're brown people, in other countries who are just fighting for their freedom from oppression and someone who is US Backed kills them. I'm just saying we should bring some of the terror we export home, and even the score up a bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Yogi is saying we should murder them for their opinion, but simply for our convenience. Shit, Americans do that all the time.

Voter Apathy - Tales Of Mere Existence

also, the Electoral College is a power check against the people. The electoral college is not required to vote with the peoples choice. Should the people choose a 3rd party candidate, the electoral college, as part of the establishment, would side with the establishment.
while we enjoy many things here in the states, democracy is not one of them.

You're 100% right. Now what are you doing about it?

"I refuse to opt-in to mob rule. I do not give you permission to run my life."
Voting is apathy. If you want to be politically active get a weapon and use it.
Best answer ever.

No, it's a retarded answer. It's the answer of someone with the mentality of a 13 year old boy. But at least it's got the right motivation, if entirely the wrong methodology.
Personally, I think this is something Australia got right. You want to be a citizen? Fucking vote.
Once again, if you're not voting, what are you doing to fix the issues that cause you to not vote.

i guess that depends on what you call "participation"
i spent 2 yrs as an attorney with the fed gov, afterwhich i worked public interest law with disability, domestic violence victims, and then incarcerated juveniles (prison reform). Then I switched out of law to study the spine and neurology and have spent the last 12 yrs getting better at getting people out of pain, and teaching it.
now the question isn't what am i doing about things, the question is whether punching a button on a ballot machine is actual participation or just a way to make people feel like they are participating, when in fact, they couldn't be more apathetic or out of touch with reality.

A Word to Rioting Muslims

Why is this getting upvoted?
To condemn the entire religion is extremely juvenile; the majority of the people in this religion are not the extremists who are rioting in the streets.
Instead of condemning entire religions, it'd be much more accurate to condemn religious fundamentalism or extremism. The majority of muslim people condemn these violent actions.

You've been registered since 2007, so surely you must know that there exists a segment of Sifters who are hardened Islamophobes (though they hate being called that). You'll find lots of Condel's videos (and other anti-Islam videos as well) have been Sifted. I used to comment on them about the absurdity of condemning a religion (which, like Christianity, has numerous different sects and faction and is practiced by people with widely differing cultural and educational backgrounds, not to mention political motivations) based on the actions of some of its members but I mostly got shouted down as a "cultural apologist/relativist."
I will say that the frequency with which these types of videos get submitted and Sifted has decreased over the years, which seems to indicate that other Sifters got as sick of the rhetoric as I was.

The majority badly need to speak up them, because I don't hear that message coming through at all. I mean, I do believe that most muslims are moderate and their religion has been hijacked and repurposed by hateful extremists but yah, where is this majority. Why is it that whenever islam is in the news its doing something fucking stupid.

Oh, and moderate or not you'd gotta admit their holy book is fertile soil for this hate and intolerance. Moderates may condemn these acts, but when they are inspired by words printed in this book that both sides, moderate or otherwise, place upon a pedestal...Are they not in some sense enabling this fanatiscm simply by being muslim?

ps. The video is titled to be directed at rioting muslims.
